Eh, the shots don't really do this update justice.  Nor does the movie, to be honest.  From what I gathered, there's a whole single player storyline devoted to each character.  They progress through the story through new single player levels that are side-scrolling, and there's a unique story for EACH character this time.  It all has to do with their history–so, like, Link would be in Hyrule for a bit fighting Ganon, then something big might happen and he goes off to beat this new enemy.  That's how I understand it.

Big deal it has a bunch of mascots.  It's still a fighting game that only is being played by hardcore gamers.

The appeal is how well it plays.  It's probably the best party game you can play on any Nintendo system, and honestly I haven't really played any game on another system that touches it besides the Guitar Hero games.  For as simple as it is to play, you can make it as deep as you want it.  There's a bunch of hard techniques that most players don't even know about that were fully intended to be put into the game.

Plus, seeing the mascots against each other is pretty cool.

Most of the fun of fighting games comes from multiplayer... try getting 30 or so of your friends to come over and play VF5, the barrier to entry in that game is so high so you might get only a few people. Yet its a lot easier to get some random person (especially a girl) to come and play a bit of Smash, and actually have them stick around and learn a few things about the game. When I was in college, back in 2001 or so, there was a Smash tournament and a Soul Calibur tournament... like 10 kids came to the SC tournament, and the Smash tournament had 50+ people... at the University of Rochester there was another Smash tourney, they got like 80+ people, including people as far away as Nova/DC, NYC, Ohio... doing moves and shit I have never even seen before. Hell, Melee was at EVO this year, the largest fighting game tournament in the states, yeah that's because it's a shallow nongame am I rite?

I don't even think most of the Smash naysayers have spent more than 10 minutes with the game... the game is a lot more complex than it originally looks (bet none of the haters have ever pulled off a wavedash), and requires way more on adaptation to the current environment (with items being thrown into play, dynamic board changing) than just memorizing strings of combos or frame counting. Smash would get a lot more respect from the average EBer methinks if it wasn't made by Nintendo and it starred a bunch of generic martial arts stereotypes instead of mascots.

And I love the complaints for Smash being shallow from people who like the Musou games

Oh, it's incredibly simple to start playing it.  You can start the game and only know how to use simple one-hit A button attacks and still be pretty okay.  It's when you start learning smash attacks, dodging, and all the other deep techniques that make the game the most fun.

The mascots are just a part of the appeal. What actually separates something like SSB from say Mario Party is (as I've already mentioned) it's a good game. Yes, it may not be something that you're into, which is absolutely FINE AND DANDY, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's actually fun to play.
