Goddamit, Caesar isn't in the trailer at all.

I'll never forgive you for killing off the Boondocks comics for this tv show.

I've only seen a few episodes, but I found it kind of hit and miss.  As a short comic strip, it hit on a beat, never long enough to overstay its welcome, even when saying something especially blatant or frank.  When you drag similarly frank messages into a lengthy cartoon, the effect deteriorates into preachiness.

I never thought it was any more preachy than recent south park episodes have been.

I haven't seen much of the Boondocks, but "not preachier than South Park" really isn't a meaningful standard at this point.

Boondocks :bow

Yes it's hit n miss but overall I found season 1 to be entertaining. I wouldn't call it preachy per se. So much of it is just social commentary

Boondocks isn't hit and miss at all to me. I liked every single episode except the Oprah episode.

I may not be black, but I can tell when something is preachy and heavy-handed, which the Boondocks toon sometimes is.  The lemonade stand, in particular, is terrible.  Of the ones I have seen.

What's the difference between "preachy" content and "social commentary", and where is the line drawn? With respect to Boondocks.

I mean...is the MLK episode "preachy"? I don't think so

I haven't seen the MLK episode.  Except the ending, of course.

The difference between prechy and social commentary?  Subtlety, I'd suppose.  The lemonade stand makes a fairly obvious point, and it is fairly obvious what the conclusion of the story will be once the initial premise is established.  It could have worked fine in a 4 panel comic, but as a 22 minute cartoon, the obviousness of the whole ordeal dulls the original point, and instead of making you think (not that something so shallow as that episode is intelligent enough to make people think), it makes you roll your eyes.  And yes, South Park does this all the time, too.

Here, PD, I came across this today, and while it's somewhat unrelated (not directly related to Boondocks, nor do the political biases of the examples match to Boondocks), I think these 2 children's books do a fine job of illustrating social commentary v preachiness:

Social Commentary

Shallow preachiness

Some of the episodes of The Boondocks are closer to B in tone than to A.
