i dunno what's funnier; the crazy animated mormon antics, or the earnest discussion of it by the not-so-animated christians at the end!

ENDLESS CELESTIAL SEX

I never realized Mormonism was just as wacky as Scientology.

not to SERIOUSLY debate the zaniness of mormonism -- because the history and core scripture are BATSHIT -- but this wasn't produced by the world's most unbiased source. very few modern mormons know the core history and scripture, since it is tightly controller by the upper tier of elders. most of 'em just see it as a VERY community-oriented take on christianity with a bonus extra mega-chapter in the bible

It was weird how smooth the animation was (the fight scene, for example).  It was like a cheap version of those old, rotoscoped Fleischer cartoons.

This is coming from Moonies, you say?

PS I think that chick's boobs got bigger when she turned into a demon.

admittedly, if you animate christianity with the same illustrative intent, it would look double-plus kooky too

Oooooooooooh...  I get things!

Speaking of Mormonism and edutainment, did you know about this?

I bet when I watch that, it'll irk me less than the Keira Knightley version, which I also haven't seen yet.

What the hell - where are the sources on this?  I'm pretty knowledgeable on the subject of Mormonism, having known quite a few LDS followers and read extensively on the religion (I'm a big fan of Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven, a great read on Mormon history and fundamentalism), but nothing sounds remotely familiar until halfway through the animated film.

I grew up with mormon parents and a mormon sister, while the cartoon or whatever may be off base, some seriously wacky shit is clearly going on that most of us dont know about. My mom and myself couldnt even watch the wedding between my sister and her husband. It was all closed door in the temple hush hush. Probably slaying some lamb or someshit.

Don't forget that some things just changed recently, like black people weren't recognized as humans until like the 70s, officially.

Quote
From the end of the nineteenth century until 1978, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints did not allow black men to be ordained to the priesthood or to enter its temples to perform ceremonies such as the Endowment or sealing that the church believes are necessary for the highest degree of salvation.

That video can be from any time pre-1978.

I think I saw this a few years back and sent it to my LDS friends and what not.

Its good for a laugh but as someone who was born and raised in the LDS church this thing is pretty inaccurate. Its some very crazy, somewhat humorous propaganda though.

I hear this a lot. I haven't attended a wedding in the temple, and I haven't been to the temple in a long ass time but there's no lamb slaying. The LDS church holds temples in really high regard and doesn't let just anyone into them once they've been dedicated. Even full time members can't go if they're not deemed temple worthy (there is an interview process). AFAIK they've always held temple open houses pre dedication to allow the general public a chance to see the inside of the temples. The recent PBS documentary had a good segment on temples and marriage.

I had a discussion with it last night with an expert, and he said it's accurate as far as doctrine goes circa the 1960s.  He says the telltale signs that really date it are the black people thing, and the mention of Joseph Smith's boast, which is now downplayed because it's apparently not deemed a good trait anymore.

That could be. I've only been alive since 1982 so I don't know everything about the shady parts of church history. I do know they've tried to dispel a lot of myths in recent years and do things to keep attention away from certain past stuff.

My view of the church is that the current leadership has some good ideas and policies, and that the overall philosophy of the church is pretty good. The problem is that there is a lot of fundamentally weird shit in the history that is hard to get past/ignore and makes you question the validity of other stuff. Also the membership tends to miss the point on a lot of basic ideas and interpret things in dumb ways. Or they just go their own route which is even worse.

There are a ton of religions out there and it is kind of silly to label one's beliefs as sillier than others.  The thing that always struck me as unwholesome about LDS was how the church,as an organization, wants to be a major part of its members' lives, even outside of church matters.  It seems rather cultlike.

There's plusses and minuses too it. Although when you decide you don't want to go its annoying to get phone calls, emails and IMs asking your status. Not too mention having to avoid people is never fun...

Yeah, I've seen the aftermath of trying to leave the church, more than once, too.  I probably should have mentioned that when saying "cultlike," too.

Origin stories follow certain patterns, and native american origin stories often use a new world/second world origin, which this sort of fits into and it would explain the 'injun' ties of the Mormon religion. Also, God being very fertile fits with native american myth and folklore as well, as it does Greek, but I think it would be more fitting to side it with the region it came from.
