Barry Bonds hits no. 755...
« on: August 05, 2007, 02:30:47 AM »
What's EB's reaction?

It's a shame that the greatest sports record in history has been tied by someone so...dirty. He's never tested positive for steroids...but does anyone doubt that he's tainted?  :-\

Willco you lived around the SF area for a time, did you ever get a sense of people's opinions on this? You may not be a baseball fan, and neither am I (at all); it's just hard to ignore Bonds

Baseball sucks.

I know. But as a sports fan I can't help but pay attention to big things like this, even if I don't like the sport. I don't like tennis but I'll watch Federer play; I don't like golf but I'll...watch Tiger for a few seconds before turning the channel

Who the fuck cares about baseball these days?  I think people by and large stopped giving a crap after the strike in the mid 90s.

I wish I played professional baseball. Then I could stand around all day and make a million bucks for doing so.

Baseball sucks ass. Worst sport ever.

I'm from Michigan: baseball is pretty damn huge here, and I'm sure it's the same in other states with big cities. The Tigers sucked for ages, and then last year they went to the World Series (and lost). Most of my friends jumped on the bandwagon...but meh, I don't like baseball. But I will say this: watching it live at the ballpark is truly magnificent. Even if you don't like baseball, you've got to go see one game in your lifetime.

Baseball did crash hard when the strike occurred, but its popularity and finances have steadily risen since the McGwire/Sosa rivalry sparked a resurgence in fan support.  It's a very healthy sport nowadays.  The same era of performance enhancing drugs that may have very well saved MLB, is now hurting it, though.  It will survive and I have no doubt that it will continue to expand and grow into a very global game.  Latin America and now Asia is really embracing the sport.  But the strike and the post-steroid era allegations have now put MLB in a situation where it will never get ahead of football as the dominant American spectator sport.

The Lions will.

They should just rename Calvin Johnson 'Jesus' and be done with it.

I cannot wait to see a QB who can actually hit him in the numbers.

edit:  The Lions will still sorta suck this year, but nothing like the Redskins will

I don't care about a "last time."

Any wideout you think you've drafted before will pale in the greatness of CJ.  I am just surprised the Lions didn't let their past failures impact their decision.  I honestly expected him to fall to Tampa, so thank god he didn't.

Kitna's not the greatest QB but he's more than capible of hitting his man (or the other team's CB). CJ will have more than enough chances to do great things. Alas, I refuse to put up ANY hope. I'm going into the season expecting him to break his neck, or maybe get sun cancer.

In terms of professional sports, I love the NFL playoffs. NBA playoffs can be fun (Dallas vs Golden State LOL) but for the most part it's extremely boring (finals this year). I miss the Kobe/Shaq Lakers :'(

I don't know what to feel.  I actually like Bonds even though everyone hates him.  But Selig really dug himself a hole.  First, he let himself get repeatedly bitch slapped by Don Fehr of the Player's Association for not agreeing or implementing a comprehensive drug testing program and now he doesn't want to attend Bond's games because he knows Bond cheated.  He didn't turn his head during the McGwire/Sosa records and now he just wants to ignore Bond's record breaking, albeit, questionable season.  At least be consistent.  I don't know why this guy is still commissioner.

To be honest with you, i dont care. I'm not a barry bond fan, so why would i care?
Now if i was a fan of barry, i would care, but i'm not. Hitting 755 is just a number to me, and nothing more. Even if i was a fan of someone hitting 755, to be honest, i would care, because as i said its just a number, = Not important............

I'm not a fan of Barry Bonds, or even the fucking borefest that is baseball for that matter. However, I don't understand how you don't find it the least bit remarkable that the guy has managed to hit the ball out of the park that many times in his career.

You don't think Kobe's high scoring games in the last year or two were the least bit phenomenal?

Um, it isn't remarkable at all.  He's a fucking dirty juicer and does not deserve the record.  Maybe if he cleaned up and went back to the minors like Sosa, but no - Bonds still acts like we're supposed to believe he went from being an Alfonso Soriano to a fucking Refrigerator Perry...naturally.

But other than that hes a good host. Mainly cause he rides Yankee jock the whole show  :D

Who the fuck cares about baseball these days?  I think people by and large stopped giving a crap after the strike in the mid 90s.

The same thing happened with hockey, except with hockey it's even worse :(

Baseball is definitely the most popular sport in the tri-state area... nobody really pays attention the Knicks anymore, nobody is into hockey, and the Giants/Jets are really big but not as big as baseball around here I don't think.

I'd say baseball and football are pretty even in my experience. The fact that the Yankees and Mets have both been good for a while helps.
