The wii is the worse gaming purchase I've ever done
« on: August 05, 2007, 05:53:56 PM »
With taxes, I paid 350$CAN for it. Then I had to buy another wiimote kit (60$), 3 games (3x60), a new wavebird (50$), only to find out that I needed a memory card (because the cube, unlike the 360, doesnt save emulated games in its internal memory).

I tried many, many games, and I only liked Excite Bike. The games I bought were Red Steel (interesting concept, lots of flaws near the end), Trauma Center (a fucking port of a DS game, how dumb was I to buy this) and Godfather (which controls like shit). The gimmick got old after 30 minutes. People don't even wanna play it when they come over. I use it to check the weather nowadays.

The upcoming lineup is weak, and frankly, I regret buying and spending so much money on it. I felt like I cheated on my 360, oh all the games I could had bought for you with all that money. The wii is the biggest smoke and mirror shows the industry has ever seen

I hope you'll forgive me, 360 :(

The sad thing is, when the Wii was announced, I started getting all hyped to buy one...and the only thing that stopped me was that I thought it was overpriced for what it was.  Imagine, I would've wasted good money on that POS if it had been released at $199.99.

I even got it modded so I could play imports, and the only thing coming out for it in japan is crappy animu licensed games and a sea life petting game. ARHUHh. HUGE 3RD PARTY DEV SHIFT INDEED

About Mario, I think it's going to be impossible to top the awesomeness of SM3 and SMW. I could never  got into Mario64 at all, I hated the fact that it felt like there were like 10 different levels with multiple 'goals' in it. Shiggy's output has been irrelevent since.

I really believe John Harker when he said there is no shift at all in the west. The east might be another story.

But, really, MS is doing a good job of payola-ing developers into making good games there, and Sony's internal studios in Japan make enough of those japaepics for me.

Japan at large has a different type of focus now. I mean, seriously, I don't like Tales at all, but it's pretty strange to see them totally shift direction...so much so that their Wii game looks worse than their DS game.

I donīt think Galaxy will top Super Mario 3. I want to buy a Wii for Galaxy, but evertime I have that desire I replay Mario 3 (the All-stars version) all over again (without warps) to remind myself that the game will not be topped.

Probably going to buy it when its 100 or something.

I came so close to buying a PS3 for $600 when I was in Florida over Christmas break last year... I still thought the system was scarce, and I was excited when I saw one in a Melbourne Gamestop... was about to run over to an ATM and take out the $600. I thank God I didn't. Actually Saturday Matinee is selling the 60 gig for $500 and giving you a $30 mail-in-rebate, was kinda thinking about it but I have a feeling I'll be able to get a 60 gig for $400 when MGS4 comes out. The PS3's lineup is still worse than the Wii's, aside from Resistance and VF5 (which is coming, in a better version, on 360 anyways), the PS3 has shit. At least the Wii has Marble Mania and SPM and the VC (Paper Mario, fuck yeah).

I have a feeling Galaxy is gonna be the best 3D platformer of all time... but naturally it won't top the 2D Marios.

I want a Wii, but I never played one, so I'm not really sure how much I'll like it.  I already own a PS3 (my main console) and 360, perfectly happy with the two.  I'll be honest that I'm not much of a Nintendo fan, but I'm starting to fall into some hype (I get tempted every time I see a Wii).  It will get good Japanese support, which makes it appealing.

I'm looking at games like:
Elebits
Super Swing Golf
Super Monkey Ball BB
Sonic & The Secret Rings
Wario Ware: Smooth Moves
Super Paper Mario
Excite Truck

Are those games worth getting a Wii for?

I hate to point to metaranking sites, but I think it's really difficult to say "The wii lineup is better than the ps3 lineup" by any objective (that is, not OMG EXCITE TRUK = 9.5) measure. The PS3 simply has more multiplatform content, and it has more original content (via PSN and via disk) as well.

edit: I totally get that tastes are subjective, so don't reply with 'well thats ur opinion lol,' but a lot of Wii's early support from non-Nintendo companies has been either completely disappointing or last gen port em ups.

edit again: I think I'm gonna recant my "more original content" statement. I'm not really in the mood to argue it or do the research to justify it.

Don't sell your wii, it will get good.

Exactly.  The PS3 lineup is more appealing to me (mostly by PSN content), but I know many others who may like Wii more.  It's all just personal preference.  I know people who have trouble finding what they like on PSP (but no problems on DS) and vice versa.

Elebits - sucks
Super Swing Golf - average and not worth paying full price for. hot shots kicks its ass.
Super Monkey Ball BB - i haven't played it but monkey ball fans tell me it's not that great
Sonic & The Secret Rings - it's shit
Wario Ware: Smooth Moves - GREAT. Get this game if you buy a Wii. It's perhaps the only good example of awesome Wii gaming sans Trauma Center
Super Paper Mario - Average. Mario rpgs SUCK.
Excite Truck - It's fun for an arcade racer, so if you've got a hankerin' for a new arcade racer it's worth checking out.

Are those games worth getting a Wii for? No, none of them are worth buying a Wii for. Even the best game on that list, Wario Ware, and the not mentioned Trauma Center, are not worth getting a Wii for. Wait until No More Heroes and Super Mario Galaxy come out and see what's coming out in the horizon after those.

What didn't you like about Elebits? A bit simplistic but still pretty fun, then again I played the game before HL2 so the whole gravity gun thing felt fresh for me. The music is also kickass, my only problem is the framerate drops but I felt it was at least worth a rental.

Ah, thanks a lot.  I forgot to mention Trauma Center, but it wasn't exactly a game I had a lot of interests in buying on DS, so I skipped it.  I dunno, I hated previous Paper Mario games, but I was thinking my mind might change with Super Paper Mario.  I'm not a Zelda fan and not really into RE4 (I acknowledge it's a good game, but just not my cup of tea when I rented), so those two are not listed.

As for the future, I was mostly looking at DDR Hottest Party (I do buy most every DDR), Fire Emblem (although I barely play them), probably SSB Brawl (although I'm more so intro traditional fighters like Tekken and Guilty Gear), the Tales of Symphonia sequel.  Mario Galaxy sounds cool, but it's tough for me to get excited due to not liking Super Mario Sunshine at all and just not enjoying New Super Mario Bros. much.

Thanks, looks like I'll wait on a Wii then. :(

Thought nintendo learned a thing from the gamecube. they haven't.
The big thing is though they DID learn a lot from gamecube. They learned to abandon the hardcore gaming market aka us. And it oddly (should it be sadly?) worked. Worked a little too well. I was once very much a Ninthing but have really fallen far from that in the wake of them changing a lot since gcn/gba era stuff.

I mostly use my WII to play GC games that I haven't finished since WII component cables are actually possible to find.  In terms of WII Games, I liked Zelda and somewhat enjoyed Tony Hawk and Trauma Center.  Most other games have been crappy, including better reviewed games like Mario Strikers, RE4 and Paper Mario.  A lot of people here shit on Zelda:TP but I think it's a great game despite some pretty boring parts.   But that might be due to the fact that I've never spend much time with any Zelda game except Adventure of LINK.  I'm okay with the purchase since many of my non-gaming friends/relatives enjoy it and I think the games will get better.  If people can tolerate PS2 graphics then WII graphics should be fine too.  I expect WII games to eventually look significantly better than the PS2/XBOX games since it supposedly got twice the power of a GC.  Just play it on a CRT instead of a LCD/PLASMA HDTV though.  480I/P games will always look shittier on a non-crt HDTV, upscaling or not.

Elebits-Pretty decent, actually even pretty good.  Control is a bit rough, but its charming, has really good music, and is surprisingly addictive.
Super Monkey Ball-Hey, my Wii plays Gamecube games, awesome!  I can buy Monkey Ball 2 and safely ignore this, cool.
Sonic-The best 3D Sonic game in years, and that is so very sad.  Not very good, but at least its solidly mediocre.
Wario Ware-Awesome party game, so-so (and content challenged) single player.  Great rental.
The others I can't comment on.  Ain't played yet.

Trauma Center is pretty dang ace, and is still my favorite Wii game by far.

I bought my Wii because I really like offbeat stuff.  I love puzzle games and arcade styled stuff, two genres I was certain the Wii would never lack, so I'm happy with it.  Also, it appears that light gun shooters might thrive on the system, and that's the only genre I will buy games for regardless of quality.

So for a very, very, very specific kind of gamer, the Wii is a great choice.  If you're not into fruity puzzle games and paying full price for bare arcade ports where you point a plastic gun at a screen, you might want to think twice about your purchase.

I want to get Monkey Ball just because I heard it has music from Hideki Naganuma (he did a lot of music for both Jet Set Radio games and Ollie King).

Here's my Wii line-up and my thoughts.  Despite having had the system since launch, I really haven't spent much time with it.

-Swing Golf Pangya: Believe it or not, this is what interested me the most out of the launch line-up, and I have barely touched it.  It looked incredibly bad on my TV, but that was before I got component cables.  I need to go back and give it another chance.

-Wii Play: Fun with friends and my wife in short bursts.  I have no desire to play this alone, and it got old in multiplayer pretty quick.

-Hajimete No Wii: Bought this because it came with a Wiimote for only 1000 yen more.  It's okay for that price, I guess, and also got old after a few plays.  I thought it was kind of funny that people were getting hyped up for the English version (although it should be expected on GAF, I guess) since there's really so little to do in this title.

-Zelda TP: Bought it at launch.  Played for...two minutes?  Sold it.  Bought it back just recently real cheap.

-Excite Truck: Pretty fun in short bursts.  Haven't completed it, but it's fun to play every now and then, and is great in two player.  Visually it's not much, but it gets the job done, and you can thankfully use your own music (MP3s off an SD Card) to replace the awful, awful in-game buttrock.

-Odoru Made In Wario: Great game, but it doesn't have much replay value in my opinion.  I didn't find much of a drive to go back and replay the various mini games like I did with the original Made In Wario on the GBA, but then I haven't been a huge fan of any of these games save for the original.

-Biohazard 4: A port of the GC version, with the bonus additions from the PS2 version, making excellent use of the Wiimote.  I loved RE4 on the previous consoles, and this is the best version of the game by far.  It plays fantastically (almost too easy at times, though), and is how more Wii-specific control games should be made.  Now if only an ORIGINAL game would come out that's as good as this is...

-Mobile Suit Gundam: Just got this recently, and have only played a little, but it plays surprisingly well.  Almost as well as Biohazard 4 does!  It's basically a first-person shooter with Gundams...using the Wiimote and nunchuck, you move and shoot, dash, fly, and use your beam saber (by slashing with the Wiimote).  It's a nicely done game that's like the Capcom-developed Gundam games in a first-person view.

-Guilty Gear XX Accent Core: Excellent port to the Wii.  Yes, it uses the Wiimote and Nunchuck for simplified dumb waggle game play, BUT you don't have to bother.  The game also uses the classic controller, Game Cube controller, and the Wii arcade joystick (pretty much made for this game) as well, for normal game play.  This version is better than the PS2 port.  It fixes the major game-freezing glitches and has better sound quality.

I would say the most time I've spent with the Wii has been using its internet functions and playing a ton of Super Mario Bros. and Punch-Out!!.

Its sad, I was so hyped for Wii when it was announced and I thought up tons of brilliant ideas that I hoped I'd see. Now we are here passing the launch drought period and summer lull and I don't feel confident that the majority of the crazy shit I dreamt up will be realized any time in the near future.

My friends find it amazing that I more or less have shelved the Wii. I actually long term loaned it to my GF for awhile until she moved into a housing situation where I didn't want to risk my stuff getting messed up.

I was in the camp of Cube owners who thought Nintendo had learned, but here we are months down the road and I see NOTHING, NOTHING that makes me feel like the Wii will be anything but my Nintendo box. Will it be fun to throw on Excite Truck, Wario Ware, Mario Soccer, and Smash when friends come over? Sure, because most of my friends do not have discerning gaming taste. Do I expect to see a single satisfying gaming experience for single player other than SMG in the next 8 months? No.

I really don't get the feeling that Western devs are shifting to Wii. Instead they'll milk the PS2 for what its worth, put out stuff on 360 and hope that the real next gen takes off eventually. All I expect to see from Western devs for the next year or more is licensed crap or PS2 ports with tacked on waggle.
NO

I don't want to sit down and play an srpg on the tv, at least not one as ugly as FE. I'd prefer to play it on my DS as I relax in my bed, sipping malt liquor
The music wouldn't be as good.

I want a bartending game.

I hope you'll forgive me, 360 :(
Uhh...Have you tried Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, and Zelda: Twilight Princess?

Yeah, I played both of them on the system they were made for, THE GAMECUBE.

distantmantra, i hate you 4-EVER for beating me to this response. :punch

Agree with OP. I'm sure even those who purchased a PS3 at least feel validated by its BRD capabilities alone.

Wii = fake next gen console with gimmicky controls + an emulator. :bowser

NOBODY ever considered it a next-gen console.  It could take off but there's going to be a SHITLOAD of shovelware.

FE on consoles has really good looking FMV's.

The reason they looked good was that they were cel-shaded.  It looked like an animated movie.  Not CGI.

And what does that have to do with the actual game? Nothing. A lot of care and dedication went into making those FMVs. It's a shame we can't say the same thing about the game engine, which looks disgraceful. I've seen PSP SRPGs with more personality.

It's in a different artistic style than the game.  I think the GC game was the first game EVER in the series to have FMV's and nobody really gave a damn.  They just looked good, the fans of the actual game couldn't give a shit about the movies or even the graphics.

My point is comparing it to FF makes no sense whatsoever.

I think you are foolish if you treat the Wii like it was supposed to be a primary console. It's a secondary console .. one to pull out for the one AAA game a year that gets released or when friends come over.

Just like the Gamecube, you should have waited for it to be out for 3-4 years and allow some titles to come out and the price to come down to a reasonable level.

It's going to be a great purchase in 2009.

I never compared it to FF

Like I said it's a shame that so much care was put into those FMVs while none was put in the game engine graphics. I know FE stans will say "BU BU BU FE ISN'T ABOUT GRAPHIX". Then they beg for more FMVs lol

It's not that hard to make the game look great. I'm not asking for Super Mario Galaxy quality stuff lol. At least put more effort into them thant a PSP title

I'm saying that those FMV's aren't something the average fan would give a crap about.  I was joking that that was a better thing about the console versions.

you are a fucking distinguished mentally-challenged fellow.  this was a bashfest that was becoming a serious thread and you brought up some FE-FF wanky bs.

you first said SRPG's aren't good on consoles because you don't like that for some reason.  people said they were fine with them.  then you said there's no advantage.  people said some negligible things the console versions have that are superior and I said a joke that it has FMV's too.

then you thought I was SERIOUS.  even after I explained the humor to you.  distinguished mentally-challenged fellow.

You can't even troll WII right you taco.

1. Show me where I mentioned FF

2. I said I'd prefer not to play an srpg as ugly as FE on the teevee. But yes, I prefer FE on handhelds

3. Shame Shame am nintenho. Usually I'd carry on embarrassing you in a debate, but I'm a more generous guy now. I'll take my leave from this thread, once again a sad reminder that reading comprehension isn't a priority for many public school system curriculum.

it's civil enough.  he understands I'm joking and just don't want him to say poorly thought videogame jokes.

edit: okay I wrongly assumed he had a sense of humor possibly.

1. when mondain talked about the wii version mockingly.

2. I very clearly explained how I came to making my joke (only skimmed over your posts) and reiterated over and over again that as a joke about FE's cutscenes being a shitty marketing tool, your posts made no sense.

3. if trolling am nintenho about a videogame makes you feel good about your homeschooling education; then good for you.  that's all that matters.
