Halo: The Flood - So far so not so good..
« on: August 05, 2007, 06:12:38 PM »
First chapter reads like a gamefaqs walkthrough. The sentence about watching the ammo read-out on the hud and when to switch clips, or the exact copy of the dialogue from the game. Hey, I like Halo, but the dialogue in game kinda blows for a book. Plus there's a big inconsistancy between Fall of Reach and Halo(game)/Halo: The Flood.

Ill probably power through this to get back to the good Halo books, but YIKES. If Nylund isn't doing the writing its pretty blech. Im pretty pumped to read First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx tho.

Too bad they didn't hire Walter S. "The Wild FIRE" Ragland, Jr. to do this one.  He's an excellent writer.

He really is, though.  If you insist on proof, I might just have to quote from Wild FIRE: Legend of the Ryukage Clans, Book I, Volume I.

the book just tries to hard to line up with the game, when in reality it should do a better job lining up with the last book :p

I can't fathom purchasing one of these books unless you're a crazy fan.  I mean, almost all books licensed out from a popular sci-fi IP reads like glorified fan fiction.  It's hardest genre to write, but contains the most amount of shitty authors.

seriously, eric nylund is a credible, decent sci-fi writer. both he and his wife -- i used to share an office with the latter long ago -- are sharp and reasonably skilled at their craft. signal to noise was a decent read. as the story goes, he OFFERED to write "the fall of reach" because he KNEW the halo ip would get crapped on otherwise.

I will give it a read, but even the best written Star Wars books (not much of a compliment) test my stomach; awful science fiction literally makes me queasy and irate.

Pretty much. In most cases it IS fan fiction.

Star Trek novels are the worst offenders, just barely in front of all those awful, awful books Bantam churns out every few months that take place in the Aliens universe.

Eric Nylund writes some great starship battles, the ground stuff isnt as good, but the added character depth to the series is nice. In short, don't be a snob Willco, you gave Transformers a B+

yeah, when you praise transformers, you are placed in critical purgatory. for their intended purposes in their respective entertainment genres, the fall of reach >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> transformers

I said I would give it a read - I didn't bash the book, just licensed sci-fi crap in general.

Ah, books based on videogames.  I will never forget the Paris Review interview with F.X. Nine, the author of this perennial classic:

i read a good chapter of the "hellgate london" novelization at b&n. it was uh. put it this way: if i could stomach writing fanfic -- and no doubt i'd be wonderfully awful at it -- i think i could at least eke a little mileage out of the setting. the author managed to make LONDON ATTACKED BY HELL MONSTERS bland and goofy.

Wow, I remember doing a book report on this in the 4th grade. And I read a lot of the Star Wars novels back then too. I don't remember them being that bad.

There's one based on Mega Man 2.  How good can they possibly be?

Wait, the video game books? Those sucked. I read the Metal Gear Solid one too. The latter comment was referring to the Star Wars shit.
