MONTREAL -- The tip line set up by Quebec provincial police investigating the disappearance of nine-year-old Cedrika Provencher of Trois Rivieres is being flooded by calls from well-meaning individuals who want to share their thoughts and despair, and even by some lonely people who are just seeking to chat with someone.

"This is a continual problem," Brunet said, giving the example that during winter months, people call 911 to find out the hockey score. "But now, obviously, we've publicized this line a lot, so there are a lot more calls."

Brunet said he can't put a number on the amount of calls the hotline has received. But his colleague Gendron said they "have been flooded with calls."

Brunet added: "There are people who had a dream during the night; people who read in crystal balls; people who read tea leaves. And while we're listening to that person, there's maybe someone trying to reach us with a real detail, and giving up."

You hear stories like this all the time.  A fair argument can be made that those tip lines do more harm than good.  If you watch Zodiac, you hear that when they set up a tipline, they got so many tips that it took nearly 3 years to follow up on all of them. . .all for absolutely nothing.
