Titan's Quest or Neverwinter Nights 2?
« on: August 08, 2007, 02:12:42 AM »
I got NWN2 already but I didn't continue after the tutorial level.  The graphics were pretty disappointing and the gameplay seemed more primitive than Baldur's Gate 2.  I was thinking of giving it another try though since Obsidian games tend to get better after slow starts.  However, I've also heard that  Titan's Quest is pretty good with the addition of the expansion.  Plus you don't need to think much w/TQ and it looks much better than NWN2. So should I get TQ on Steam and put away NWN2?

I'm surprised you didn't get NWN2 since it was a pretty big deal for PC RPG gamers.  For some, it was more important than Oblivion.  But I guess that's due to the D&D license.

NWN2 is a different experience, one I was familiar with and didnt want to get into again. Not a bad experience, just not what I wanted.

Yeah.  PC games are insane bargains.  Steam works much better now so I'm pretty cool w/it.  It's nice to not have to worry about scratched discs, lost discs, or driving to the store.  I'm leaning towards getting it now since there're already two votes.  Also, like you said, good graphics make my skin tingle.   :D  I'll wait for Drinky to confirm since he's a pretty hardcore PC gamer.

You tried Planescape?  I've always wanted to try it and IWD but these games take a lot of time and effort.   What do you think about BG2?  Do you at least think that BG2's the best PC RPG ever?  I think it's the greatest RPG ever on PC or consoles.

Planescape is diff. from those others, tho. It's a much more narratively-focused, console-hybrid RPG. Actually, it was sort of a precursor to the KOTOR dynamic.

TQ is a D2 clone, just so you're perfectly aware. You kill things, you loot things, you kill more things.

yeah played planescape too, tho never that far in. BG2 was a great game, and the wild mage in the expansion was just keen. But really the BG games always tend to focus on one super powerful target, usually a mage, that you have to basically out spellcast, while the IWD games were always about stupid numbers of enemies vs your party. The first IWD was fantastic, the expansion Heart of Winter kinda broke the balance of the game and made Druids completely uber. IWD2 was MUCH harder, to the point the community patched an easier difficulty. That early orc camp mission with the drums drove me batty, and argh nothing like coming up against crystal golems halfway through and realizing NO ONE IN YOUR PARTY IS PROFICIENT IN CRUSH TYPE WEPONS LOL

I play it at least once a week and finish a few quests. I'm still on chapter 2.

Obsidian + glitchy mess

It's fine now, though it still requires either a performance machine, or a love of tweaking.

They really are 2 different games.  TQ (only play it with the expansion installed) is consistent throughout, whereas NWN2 (single player) has some slow bits (you played the tutorial) and some questionable UI decisions (but you learn them).

They're both great, but unless you want to mess with a serious, flawed RPG, go with TQ.

Hmm, Patel, Planescape sounds pretty interesting.  Might have to look for the discs again.  I'm glad I"ve got it already since older PC games are really hard to find.  IWD sounds kinda distinguished mentally-challenged though.  BG 2 was already pretty hard.  There really is no need to make a game that's even harder than BG2.

And yeah, I know Titan's Quest is like D2 but I loved Baldur's Gate on the consoles, which are even dumber than D2 clones.  The sequel and the two Norrath games were kinda boring, BG on consoles is like an experience that you would only want once.  I'll be happy with TQ if it can be as fun as the 1st time I play the console version of BG.

:lol  How long have you been playing it?  BG2's deep but not that deep.

Gay is kinda harsh.  The thinking requirements of the PC Baldur's Gate games is why I put them above stuff like FF.  Also, NWN2 seems to have really toned down the strategic elements of BG.  The technical problems are troubling though.  NWN2 already doesn't look that great with MAX settings.  It kinda sucks that I might have to turn down the details even on my 3.6ghz Core 2 Duo & 8800 GTX.

I got it around March. It was hard getting it at the outset because of the tutorial dungeon, but as I got further in that place the more I started to appreciate the game's battle system. Then chapter 2 started and I've been doing nothing but quests.

It's just hard to get into because of the graphics, I think.

That explains it.  BG2 is pretty hard to get into if you've never played the 1st one.  My friend got all excited about the PC versions after he beat the console versions.  I gave him my awesome BG2 Collection's Edition and he gave it back after a week.   He's got such terrible tastes!  :maf

BG2's visuals look OK even now to a graphics nitpicker like me.  The 2D drawn graphics makes the aging less apparent.  I've always wished that the in-game characters looked as distinctive as the portraits in the menu though.

The graphics really aren't that bad, it was the town that I had to get used to. I mean, I'm used to over the shoulder perspectives, and even in other 2d rpgs I'm used to it's a lot easier to navigate than in BG2's city at first. For some reason the city turns me off. It takes too long to navigate around it and you hardly see ahead of you.

BG2 wasn't hard to get into for me at all story wise. It's got BOO.

They need to do the viewpoint like that because BG2's battles are more epic than most RPGs.  The Fog of War for new areas does bother some people though.  I'm not sure if you can turn it off with a mod.

NWN2 has an incredibly slow start-it seemingly takes forever just to get to Neverwinter, and the game is pretty basic and not super-interesting until you do. However, once you get there the game starts to improve quite dramatically. I enjoyed the game completely and am very much looking forward to the expansion to see how the whole thing ends.

The writing really is top notch and leagues better than even Bioware's stuff. It just takes a while for the player to get meaningful, engaging dialgoue with the really interesting NPCs.

Edit: As for Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, it's the best RPG ever made. A lot of people will say Torment Torment Torment, and I'll respond by saying while that game is great and a classic, it is in the end a rather lopsided experience. Baldur's Gate 2 does everything pertty much perfectly.

Pretty sure it works fine in other countries. I know the Euro people I play games with like Steam since a lot of games have US pricing-which is VERY favorable in today's exchange rate. You should give it a try.

Thanks, it worked!  I had trouble before, but making a new account did the trick.  I am going to buy both Titan Quest games right now!

Will there be any trouble if I was to reinstall the Half-Life 2 or Sin games that I bought, though?  That was under my old account, and I cannot access it any longer since the e-mail address I used is gone.  I likely won't bother with HL2 but I wouldn't mind giving Sin another shot...it ran like garbage last time I tried to play it.

Baldur's Gate 2 does everything pertty much perfectly.

I wholeheartedly agree with that.

I think the problem with both NWN1/2 is that there's a huge focus on making a game that will work well with fan made modules.  It's pretty hard to make a great single player experience w/RPGS if the developer isn't focusing completely on it.  Hopefully, the expansion will have a better and more well-rounded campaign now that they've got most of the technical stuff out of the way.

Smooth: After half a bottle of vodka, thinking does seem lame.

:lol  Your brain still functions well enough to be funny though.

I think you would need to get back your old log-in information.  Your email shouldn't need to be working for you to log-in to your old account.  Valve is kinda assholish about giving back your account info.   Last time, I lost my password, I emailed them twice and they never responded.  It's like they wanted me to rebuy my games.  Luckily I found my password myself eventually.

I am serious when I say I would cream my pants if they made a 3rd person perspective BG remake.

I don't think it would work unless they tone down the battles.  That's probably why Kotor's battles are so much smaller in scale than BG2's.

NWN2 has a great story, stick with it. Some of the characters are written very well (except for that female druid .. ugh).

TQ is a nice little machine that does what it does and does it well ... but there isn't anything magical about it (except for some of the graphical whizzbangery). In a way, it reminded me of my experience playing Dungeon Seige.

Titan Quest, definitely. NWN2 is a good game, but even after the last patch, the camera is still a pain and there's bugs galore.  Wait for the expansion to get NWN2, where there are supposed to be some pretty dramatic camera and interface changes.

Okay, I'm going with TQ since almost everone, including the master troll, is giving the nod to TQ.   TQ+Expansion is dowloading right now.  Because of NWN2's strong pedigree, it's kinda surprising that so many vouched for TQ.  I guess I'll wait until NWN2's expansion to give it another go.  It's really annoying how a lot of those D&D games always hold off improvements for the original game until the expansion is released.

Well, genre preferences don't always matter if there's a big gap between two games.  I personally prefer RPGs that are like Baldur's Gate on PC over RPGS that are like Baldur's Gate on consoles.  Which means that I should prefer NWN2.  However, NWN2 seems like a game that is being held back by technical issues.  I'm not putting NWN2 away forever.  I'll just wait until the technical problems are sorted out.

I've got Immortal Throne downloading right now!

Can I play the original game through Immortal Throne too?  Also what's the deal with the bonus codes...I saw one listing for ninja armor.  What gives?

I tried out TQ for a sec just to see how it ran; I think this is much more what I was looking for instead of Marvel Ultimate Alliance.  UA is getting sold off today.

absolutely. TQ adds a fifth act but in true D2-clone style the REAL meat is all the new drops and gameplay elements it adds. you shouldn't even touch TQ until the expansion's installed.

the bonus codes are for shitty armor that was given away at stores as a preorder. it's utterly useless set stuff.

Just the art style. Technically, it's very nice; plenty colourful and detailed.

It's obvious more than a few of you guys have spent quite a bit of time on these games. Upload some shots of your tricked-out characters!

It's obvious more than a few of you guys have spent quite a bit of time on these games. Upload some shots of your tricked-out characters!
