Just finished reading all of "The Lord of the Rings"

Classic experience. I'll always have the memory of each character inside me, as if Aragon shot his Westernesse seed DEEP INSIDE.

A couple of points...

    - I loved how the splitting of the characters was handled in "Return of the King". I thought I would have become disinterested in this (since I really hate how plots play out, slowly, when handled from different perspectives).

    - The book is very detailed. It Tolkien really strived to paint the world in your head by writing about the landscape and the geological locations in relation to other geological locations. What this did (which I was actually amazed by) was made you look at the Map of Middle Earth and you could chart the paths each party went, and you would recall the imagery in your head of each place. It was a real cool moment for me.

    - Each character was handled well and liked all of them (the main characters). I was iffy with Sam at first but he really comes into his own at the end.

    - I was surprised at how the Battles were handled, I mean, it was almost fleeting (and more about the journey towards the battles...mainly Minas Tirith) but it was harsh. I was kinda expecting him to float over it, or kind of glorify it and sugar coat it. Nothing like that. I thought it was cool when the Orcs catapulted the severed heads of the Allies into Minas Tirith. Stating how each head had a grimace and some were smashed. The soldiers would look away in fear that they would see a familiar face of a soldier they had walked with. Wow

    - The absolute end (where Frodo and Sam are within Mordor and traveling towards Osgiliath) was harrowing...well, that is probably too strong a word but the need for water and later on actual nourishment was handled very well. The will to go on in such a barren wasteland would have had to have been very strong.

    - Fuck Gollum. Seriously. That little fucker should have got shived. I understand he was vital to the destruction of the ring but jesus lawd I woulda gutted the little fuck.

    - Finally. Man...I mean...in the movie, you can tell the man love undertones are there but I didn't know it was overflowing as much within the book. At some point, I honestly thought Sam was going to take advantage of a broken, sickly Frodo and ride his ass bareback to Mount Doom. Tolkien obviously came from a different time where things between two doods isn't as awkward. Or maybe theres more to mister Tolkien? :o

Great book, would NOT read again OH GOD IT WAS SO LONG but I loved it. Oh and Aragon rocks your socks etc etc. I wish I was decended from the Numernor!  :'(  :'(  :'(

Same here. The book is great. It's a very "heavy" piece of work and you've got to give it all your attention.

I think it has more to do with our own generation's take on the issue. It pisses me off that in today's advanced society if you have a close bond with a person of the same sex someone's going to spin it as being "gay". To me all that does is play into gay stereotypes that those relationships feature no true "love", and instead are solely based on physical acts (sex) which leads to little dedication between partners.

what's wrong with frodo and sam wanting to fuck? you know tolkein probably gave/got some deep dickin' in those trenches in no man's land; in fact, he undoubtedly plowed c.s. lewis' chocolate asterisk without shame, 'cuz lord only knows god wasn't lookin'. the only thing that demonstrates a taboo is that tolkein couldn't write the grr martin styled hobbit orgy he wanted to because of them goddam post-victorian mores.

I seriously thought it was going to happen within the tower Frodo is spirited away too by the Orcs (after the encounter with Shelob). Sam was probably salivating as Frodo paced around in just his Hobbiton hide. The passage states something like "The room illuminated his skin like fire", totally something you would read before a good ass fuck :drool

The books took time getting into the first time because I was only 9 or so, and the writing was...awkward, but damn if I loved it the more I read it.
