Laptop repair/buying super funtime
« on: August 12, 2007, 01:49:16 PM »
Skip to the bottom if you don't wanna read it all.

I've got two laptops now.

The hinge snapped off on the first one (have no clue how, I didn't drop it or anything).

How much would that cost to repair?

Anyway, I figured I was done with that laptop anyway, so I'd switch to this other one I've had put aside for a while. I hadn't been using it because, as of 6 months ago, it would only work when plugged into a wall. I planned on buying a new battery for it, but it magically started working the day I busted it out, so I just started using it.

Here we are a few days later, and now it doesn't work at all. When I plug it into the wall, the blue ring around the charge port lights up, but the little lightning bolt at the front does not. I'm pretty sure it had about 40% charge left when I last shut it, so I think it's just fucked. Any ideas?

Anyway, I figure I'm going to be buying another fuckin' laptop. I don't want a Compaq, and I don't want a two-hinged one like the first one (the second one has a single, long, sturdy hinge. rowr). Needless to say, I don't feel like spending too much on it, especially since I'm definitely going to be buying a warrantee for the damn thing. I'd also like to buy it at brick and motor so I can have easy exchanges, which means BestBuy for me.

Here's what I've found:

My favorite already comes with 2GB of RAM, which helps subsidize the warrantee (I think I'd want 2GB with Vista Premium)

TBH, I was hoping I could pick up an old Windows XP laptop on clearance or something, I could care less about Vista. But if I'm gonna get Vista I want Premium and 2GB of RAM. Only the Toshiba is offering this out of the box, which frees up $$$ for a warrantee.

Wall of text avoidance:

What I'm really asking is - is the repair of the V6000 going to be pricey and time consuming? And is the Toshiba a good buy?
Thanks.

Really? I was talking to my friend and he said he's had one for 3 years.

Any estimation of what it'd take to fix the V6000?

The power issue, I don't care about the hinged laptop.

not sure. sounds like a battery failure, which replacement SHOULD fix. is it older than a year? hp warranty support is really good.

And what's wrong with Toshiba?

If it was a battery problem, then it should still work when plugged in.

I believe it's newer than a year, but I wasn't the original buyer, it was given to me earlier this year. Do I just need the serial number, or do I need more info than that? And are their warranties transferrable?

i see toshiba's fail regularly, whereas the dell and hp/compaq mid-range units don't seem to have any issues.

i have a laptop for sale that's in great condition, btw -- it's about six months old.

hp special edition with a turion dual-core (hl-56), 2 GB RAM, DVD burner, and a 12-cell battery. 1280x800 BrightView LCD screen. includes vista ultimate. i'll take best offer!

I have a feeling a repair shop would say the same thing. What do you think is a worst case repair cost?

And can I see a pic of your laptop for sale? Also, a more complete list of specs, or link to the actual model on HP's site?

And what's the deal with an HP warranty?

(not my pic) it has no cosmetic damage, and is in tip-top shape. ask maf about how well i treat my laptops. i even have the original box and packaging! :) i'll take actual pics if you're interested.

i dunno how warranty transfers work with hp; you might wanna call 'em and find out.

My laptop's only three years old and I already want a new one.  Cursed consumerism. :(
