FF retrospective part 5: Final Fantasy VII

Watching it now. It's gonna be good. I hope they trash how FFVII has not aged well at all and how the fanbase is annoying and how FFVII jumped the shark with all the milking. PLEASE.

Eh.  It's still a fun little romp every now and then, but yeah, I agree it's gotten pretty annoying how so many people like it so much.

The music is pretty godly though.  Golden Saucer :bow

Doesn't mention all the translation issues the game had or anything.  Basically kissing Square's ass.

It even talks about Dirge of Cerberus but doesn't mention how badly received it was.  :-\

Or how the game basically ruins so many FFVII mythos and plotlines.

Does anyone actually give a shit about VII's story?  As far as I'm concerned, I take the game's original story and keep it that way.  The movies and other games don't mean anything to me.

I got into the series with FF6, released as FF3 in the states.  While I enjoyed FF7 I thought it was a step down, but great nonetheless.  I don't get why anyone would want that game remade, though.  Square should just release for PSN.  But knowing Square that will never happen as they love milking their franchises and making you rebuy your games again and again.  Man, their getting in Nintendo territory in that regard.

The big weaknesses that I remember at the time:
Localization.  I still don't understand a lot of the stuff and the end of Disc two.
Sephiroth.  What a spolied brat.  Amazing boss theme though. But nothing compared to Kefka in terms of evil
Character Design. Don't get me started with that.  I liked his FFVIII and FFX designs, though.
Materia.  I spent way to much time mastering materia.  In the end I had complete Master Materia sets for 4 characters in all the main materia categories.  But I maxed out the game clock and wasted so much time.
Characters.  In the top levels the characters, with the exceptions of their limit breaks, were virtually indistinguishable from each other again due to the materia system.

Again, while its raving fans could be annoying, I'm so glad it was such a big hit as that meant more localized JRPGs for the U.S., and it also introduced many of gamer to what you would call a niche genre previously.

Same here, but still. Talk about shitting on the game.

It's one of my favorite gaming memories of all time. A friend and I would play it everyday for a month straight. Taking turns every hour or so. In 1996 (?) it was one of the best games I had ever played at that point. It was like an unholy merging of FFIII, Lunar and trace amounts of the Phantasy Star setting. Mix all that up and throw in some (at the time) innovative use of mini-games and it was an instant classic.

So, that's how it is burned in my memory. Never touched the game since then.

Himu, suck on a log. A log made of persona 3 delays.

They weren't critical about ANY of the games in any retrospective. Not even TWO! And you want them to attack 7, the most popular of them all?

The 7 spinoffs are almost universally bad. DoC has some catchy Gackt music though. Unfortunately, Gackt is also a major character. I think Advent Children gets a lot of undue hate. It's not a good movie, but as fanservice, they probably couldn't have done better. Maybe have furries in it, I don't know.

From what we've seen, Crisis Core looks pretty cool though. I think a lot depends on whether or not Nojima fucks up the story even further.

FF7 is not a bad game imo, it's a pretty decent entry in the series and at that time it had such incredible production values something unheard of when it came to consoles rpgs.

what makes FF7 looks bad is that distinguished mentally-challenged fanbase :-\

yeah. ff7 isn't bad at all. I'm quite fond of it and I'm glad it was my first rpg, but the fanbase and the constant milking make me almost hate the game.

I really don't think it aged all that bad. The graphics are pretty fugly, but come on now. I just replayed it a year ago. Even though it isn't my favorite (<3 VI), it was still pretty damn good.

The localization was total shit.  I remember reading an interview with some a-hole called Seth Luisi about how there was a team of 20 people working on the translation to be sure it was "perfect."  And it turned out to be utter trash.  I'm sure my opinion of the game would be a lot higher if the translation were better.

I was too distracted by Barret's GODAMMITs and YOs to notice any issues.
