The Shins: Wincing the Night Away - Best Album?
« on: August 14, 2007, 01:25:44 AM »
Kinda thinking that lately. Its like they took the "Catchy" from Chutes Too Narrow and the superior lyrics from Oh Inverted World and mashed it all together to produce a really delightful album that never seems to get old with me. Chutes Too Narrow did eventually get old with me because the lyrics seemed to be made pretty deliberate for the sake of being used in car commercials aimed at 20 somethings. This may not have been their intent.

Then you have Oh Inverted World which managed to get slapped into the Garden State Soundtrack. I cant even listen to New Slang anymore thanks to that fucking movie.

I've heard New Slang and it sounded like old-school Simon & Garfunkel.  Is that how The Shins generally sound? 'Cuz I liked it.  A lot.

I dunno, I'm not digging the new album as much as I dug Chutes.

Its a good, non offensive, album. They don't really try to hard to do anything new or exciting. Some of the songs sound a bit too similar to me.

I'm not sure how I'd rank Wincing yet.  I think some of the songs are rather different for them actually.  My fav being Sealegs, a R&Bish song.

Really?

I love the backing vocals on "Turn on Me". Made me realise that The Shins would actually be pretty decent if they had another vocalist. I can handle all those hearts on sleeves better if it's a girl wearing them.

Chutes got old with me pretty quick, Oh Inverted World is a better album of the two I think. Tho Chutes Too Narrow is still great.

I dunno how someone can 'hate' the Shins aside from it being a taste issue, their stuff is pretty solid.

The Shins are good in small doses. A few tracks on the mp3 player .. but I think their music is too "samey" when you listen to an entire album straight through.

That's why I respect Norah Jones (or at least her producers) .. on first listen through you think every track is the same. But after a few times through, you notice all the tempo changes and other arrangements that give each song it's personality.

This is my album of the year.  Look, I hate the Shins.  I hate the first two albums.  They are terrible, shitty, the worst thing of all time.  Boring.  Hate them.  But this album is utterly brilliant.  I was on E when I saw the Shins live this April, and it may be one of the happiest moments of my life.

That generally happens on E. Also often makes you think shit music is good. I got tricked into thinking an Ian Brown track was the best thing ever once because of it.
