tsk tsk tsk.

As if games weren't already easy now. Might as well give us a win button, Nintendo.

miyamoto probably thinks super mario world is hard, what does he know. it's not like he has worked on a good game since then, either.

Maybe he means less challenging games, as in games that don't require memorization of long joypad sequences to play, or having 15 million doohickeys to collect, or having an overwhelming amount of nonlinearity, or having to use every button on the controller (including L3 and R3) to play... just games that have easy to grasp gameplay but keep you coming back - such as SMB, Contra, the Mega Man games, many of the shooters out there, etc. At least this is what I'm praying... since that's what I'm looking for :)

But those things aren't challenging. In many cases, the things you listed aren't challenges.

Also, Nintendo is one of the biggest offenders of collecting doohickeys. Long joypad sequences? Most fighting games can still be played via button mashing. Overwhelming amount of nonlinearity? When is it overwhelming? Use a journal or something? What type of gamer who has been playing games all his life has problems with todays controllers?

But yeah, that type of stuff is what I look for too. But he clearly means challenging as in difficulty.

Miyamoto's only future is popping huge doses of Donepezil daily. What a senile, out of touch old coot.

Core gamers love their challenging games. Casuals even like them too-an easy game is a boring game.

I miss the old Nintendo games, that shit was pretty challenging... StarTropics, Kid Icarus, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, the second quest of Zelda... hell yeah, that's my kinda challenge!

I feel most of the NES games weren't particularly challenging, but were just mired with bad controls and half assed game design. Angry Nintendo Nerd proved this shit.

not really. the original zelda is unplayably clunky.

however, guardian legend, the mario games, and the various rpgs hold up pretty well

How is this different than the first party games that were introduced on the Gamecube last gen? Almost all of them were dumbed down, easy games. All the games that offered a challenge were from third parties.

-- --

So yea, Nintendo has discovered the casual game market. Something PC gaming discovered about 4-5 years ago with the rise of broadband and the internet. Something the cellphone market in Japan discovered around the same time.

He said before that he was Making Mario Galaxy difficult to the point that some of the other developers started questioning him.

But regardless, I don't think this is a new philosophy for him. Sounds like the type of games he's always been making, Zelda aside if you consider that hard, I guess.

I thought some of the caves in Pikmin 2 were fairly difficult.  :-\

One of the reasons it was my favorite GCN title.

Mario Sunshine was a tough game despite its kiddy looks.  The Metroid Prime games were challenging too.  Zelda is no cakewalk either.  There're probably other examples.  Like the two Pikimin games which I haven't really tried.   So it's probably not fair to say that Nintendo's games were already dumbed down and easy on the GC.

Aside from some of the puzzles, WW wasn't a very challenging game. Sunshine I agree was difficult, though mainly due to annoyances (pushing the Watermelon down the hill) and the secret areas. TP was slightly more challenging than WW, though.

The Oracles... now there are some Zelda games with a great level of challenge.

honestly, twilight princess was a lot easier than wind waker, even though in neither game was i ever in danger of losing significant hearts.

Miyamoto is somewhat irrelevant to hardcore gamers today. I don't care what he's saying, what he's doing, or how he's living.

Well, TP definitely got easier as things went on, but the lava area was fairly tricky the first time through with only 4 hearts. WW babied you with the amount of hearts you found in pots and from defeated enemies.

You know like a month ago he said that his team made him tone down galaxy, shunshine retro levels were a good challenge, and so were areas of pikmen 2 -- which are the only real games I can think of that he had a lot to do with.  i think he still knows how to balance difficulty.

the camera in ww's boss fights (and overall) caused me to lose more hearts than in twilight princess (gc version; wii version is an abomination). outside of the zant fight (and that's only cuz i was being distinguished mentally-challenged during his first two forms), i don't think i was ever at less than 3/4s of all hearts full. well, there were a couple buh moments where i was interrupted or spaced the fuck out, but by and large tp is probably the least-threatening game i've played in the past generation. ganon was just embarrassing, and the roll-behind-the-back twirly slash was so stupid overpowering in any 1-on-1 fight.

I dunno, I never found anything harder in WW than the darknuts in TP. Especially when there's 2 of em. Though, overall I guess I wouldn't think they're too far off from being equal in difficulty.

the darknuts were easy as hell -- i thought the aeralfos were harder. to beat the darknuts, all you do is get about a link's length away and repeatedly jumpslash and backflip back, and when they lose their armor, spam the rolling backslash. JEEZ FOLKS!

I didn't mean they were hard, but rather they were harder than the darknuts in WW (never got hit by them once, I think).

Forgot about the Aeralfos too.

Stallord was my favorite boss fight in the entire game, and the spinner was the best new item ever. And it was 60 FPS too!

But yeah, the spinner was highy underutilized outside. A shame cause it was so fun.  :'(

The spinner at first struck me as Link's First Extreme Skateboard and I thought that the whole level would suck.  Lucky for me I was wrong.

Yeah, it's funny how when I was playing through the dungeon to get the four ghosts, I thought it was okay but was actually getting kinda irritating (but that's cause I didn't get what to do with the chandelier  :lol), but after I got the spinner and actually learned how to use it(messed up quite a few times getting out of that particular corridor) , I was shocked to see how my opinion of the dungeon changed so drastically.
