TUESDAY BUYSTRAVAGANZA
« on: August 14, 2007, 03:32:05 PM »

Pedoriffic Connelly (she looks like a midget version of non-pedoriffic Connelly! Her face hasn't changed at all) and Big Dick Bowie!  And sex muppets!

I am getting the superior 360 version of the game, so I was in the market for a copy of the movie.

It is Lynch, so I was required to purchase.  Haven't seen yet so I am keeping my expectations low.

Wong Kar-Wai <3

I used to watch this every day for a period of roughly 3 years.  This will be the first time I have seen it since then.

I was interested in renting a Wong Kar-Wai movie that had some sci-fi elements.  It think it was called 2046 or something like that.  My friend told me his movies are boring and confusing though.  Also, translation inaccuracies probably make them harder to comprehend.  It's just surprising that you would like his films so much despite the cultural gap.  What do you like about his films?

Labyrinth is a classic, and partly because of gorgeous 14 year old Connelly  :-*

Rumor has it Bowie got a flower on that set  :-*

This is a stellar set of DVDs :bow

I would be grabbing a few of them myself if not for double dipping.  Is there anything on Labyrinth, Hard Boiled, or Taxi Driver that make it worthwhile?

Also, I think I'm gonna hold off on buying INLAND EMPIRE until it's either cheaper or I actually see it first.  I'm not exactly a completionist.

TVC!! You could've bought this instead!!

2046 barely has "sci-fi" elements in it, and you really need to watch In the Mood for Love before seeing 2046. Wong Kar-Wai (along with Pedro Almodovar) is my favorite modern director because I love his visual style and the use of music. His stories can be difficult follow, but I really enjoy them. In the Mood for Love is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, I could watch every day and never get tired of it.

His films are not for everyone, though, so no big deal if you don't like them.

What do you like about his films?

His movies have interesting visuals, if sometimes not totally consistent.  His movies are generally more mood-pieces than they are plot-heavy, which I find very few directors to be good at.  I'd recommend Chungking Express before you watch anything else, though.  It's probably his most accessible.

IIRC (I only rented it), the previous release of Labyrinth was a one disc, barebones catalog deal, whereas this one is 2 discs and all.  Fact is, I don't really care about the special features for something like Labyrinth.  Hard-Boiled, well, this is the first DVD release of it since the Criterion, right?  Or was there another one?  It's a new transfer anyway (even if there are apparently some issues with it).  Taxi Driver, the previous version was the same as the deluxe VHS version, with few special features, whereas this is a new transfer and it has a ton of new features.

Woah, Distantmantra, how common is that set?  I can still get that, I only have one of the movies in it.

Really common. I bought it from DeepDiscount a couples years ago during one of their 20% sales, but it's still in stock most places.

Sony needs to release 2046 on Blu Ray. Wong Kar-Wai in HD would be so fucking awesome.

edit: Sony picked up the Ashes of Time Redux, so it's possible!!

As soon as I get BioShock and Metroid Prime 3 paid for, that Taxi Driver set is going in my fucking collection.

I fucking love that movie. I think it's actually my favorite film at the moment.

Good choice sir. Just don't watch the third one, like I have managed to do for years and years because of fear that they fucked the movies over.

If you go into it with that attitude, it's honestly not all that bad.  Andy Garcia is the man in it, and Michael Corleone's scenes are all still great.  Plus, if you're one of those anti-religion guys, it's got a great catholic church/pope plot that's not to be missed.

If they had kept the original casting of Winona Ryder instead of Sophia "Can't act/Fugly" Coppola, it could have been a really good movie.

Obviously, it came out at the same time as Goodfellas, and even on it's own is no classic.  When it's compared to the first two Godfathers and Goodfellas though, it really comes out looking bad.  I went into it expecting the worst movie ever, and was pleasantly surprised.

Just finished watching it

"She was the best piece of ass I've ever had and I've had them all over the world!" :rofl

Great movie, I kept trying to piece the scenes together from the book into the movie but it was edited differently. I love it though, Al Pacino = FUCKEN AWESOME.

Its kinda wack how they gloss over Luca Brasi though, he was evil in the novel.
