I'm creating this thread as a support group for people who haven't been able to find a copy of Bioshock at a store that's breaking street date. :'(

NO DEMIS ALLOWED. ;)

From the Game Informer review:

Everything about this game screams perfection, but there’s one element that might not sit well with you. Rather than dying in battle, players simply respawn at a vita-chamber. The damage dealt to an adversary remains even though the player didn’t succeed. You simply have to go back and clean up your mess to continue on. As intense as the gameplay is, knowing you really can’t fail takes some of the bite out of it. Yes, this system will allow gamers of all skill levels to complete the game – which is a developer’s dream – but it may alienate gamers who only turn to games for a challenge.

Whaaaa....? I don't like the sound of that at all...

day 1

it's cold. very cold. a gray malaise has settled over the countryside. i can hear the sound of never ending running water from the rotting pipes in the basement. toysrus has no copies that they wish to sell. god, it's cold.

day 2

mother went to town today to see if any gamestops would sell her a copy. she returned empty handed, her sense of dignity compromised. father is still in bed. his coughing is getting worse.

that's pretty distinguished mentally-challenged.  might have to turn up the difficulty a bit to balance this out.

If you die, you lose ALL YOUR BULLETS that you used

I simply save and reload before doing stuff, DUH a common PC gamer practice, hello

Also, you can change the difficulty on the fly -- game too hard? Switch it to Easy!

There's also an option - Unlock Framerate - basically a V-Sync option

If there were Bioshock
And no 360
If there were a 360
And also Bioshock
And Bioshock
A game
A city beneath the waves
If there were the sound of Bioshock only
Not Stranglehold
And dull walls breaking
But the sound of Bioshock in 5.1
Where the water trickles through brass walls
Drip drop drip drop drop drop drop
But there is no Bioshock

Xbox 360s are standing there still as death
and ghosts of bioshock
meet their owners walking
two by two beneath the shade
and standing on the marble steps.

There is a sound of music echoing
through the spinning disk drive
and in the field there is
another sound tinkling in the cotton:
chains of The Darkness shitting up the scene

The games go back with an iron clank,
a hand is on the gate,
a dry DS trembles on the wall.
Bioshocks are walking.
They have broken wiis down
and 360s stand there still as death.

shadowless the hours pass
and bioshock, still as as cold iron
unringing; "where is rapture?"
the mad, dead sun hangs overhead
and i am seated by the gate
to sigh, burned, unhomed.

BECAUSE I could not stop for Ryan,
He kindly stopped for me;
The bathysphere held just ourselves
Two men, no gods, no kings.

We slowly dove, he knew no haste,
I gladly gave away
My labor, and my leisure too,
For Rapture, his city.

We passed the room where children played
With Plasmids in a ring;
We passed the people at their work,
We heard the free men sing.

We paused before a tower that seemed
To soar out of the ground;
The roof was scarcely visible,
The neon top, unfound.

Since then ’tis centuries; but each
Feels shorter than the day
I first surmised that Ryan's goal
Was toward Eternity.

Update:

EB - Let me hold the LE, wouldn't sell it to me. I offered a $20 bribe above the list price and to pay in cash so they wouldn't have to ring it up til next Tuesday. Wouldn't budge.
Blockbuster Video - Had the game out, wouldn't sell it.
Hollywood Video/GameCrazy - No.
Kmart - No.
Target - No.
Games for Less - Surprisingly, no. They were voted Most Likely to Break Street in a recent local game retailers poll.

FINAL JUDGMENT: :(

Bad news update.  They have the 360 version on torrents sites already.  It's fucked up how punks like Jotaro can be playing while tru gamers that're willing to pay $20 extra are stuck waiting.

2K Games' PR head says:

Quote
It recently came to 2K Games’ attention that one of our retail partners prematurely sold some copies of BioShock prior to the game's official launch date. Retailers are typically shipped product in advance to ensure they can meet launch day demand on street-dated product. As a result, a few people were able to purchase the game early. Additionally, a TV advertisement for BioShock prematurely ran that incorrectly indicated that the game was available for purchase. 2K Games has reached out to our retail partners and is maintaining the street date of August 21st in North America and August 24th in Europe, when BioShock will be available at retailers. 2K Games is appreciative of the gamer excitement and critical acclaim leading up to the title’s launch.

Basically, S.O.L.

I move that Jotaro be banned if he tries to act like he's cool for playing it early via piracy and that the folks who buy games in stores for money are the suckers.

The poetry slam will continue tomorrow. :'(

It`s too good of a game for the Japanese ... although the loli element may swing it.

Asian version in September though.
I`ve got a US copy ordered, so just playing the waiting game (it`s on DS)

What gives with the September date...?  I e-mailed Play-Asia about changing my order to the U.S. version...I read the game is region-free.  Pirates seemed to have confirmed this.

Anyone picked it up yet?  I'm going to the store in the next 1/2 hour to get it.  I ditched school today.  Got to keep my priorites straight.  Playing Bioshock>everything else.

After much deliberation and messing around w/both demos, I think I'm going w/ the 360 version.  Despite slightly crisper graphics on the PC version, the difference is not big enough for me to see Bioshock's splendour on a 24" mon instead of a 46" Tv.  Not to mention great surround sound vs headphones.   The PC version also doesn't have anti-aliasing working properly which detracts another advantage that I would have expected with a 8800 GTX.
