My Wii review

I've had as much fun as can be had with Wii in about 2 hours. I'm really glad I didn't drop 250 bucks on this.

What did you play?

Sports and TP. At first it's really exciting and you feel great and then... The controls are a little wonky and I was willing to give it some lee-way via innovation, but I couldn't imagine being like I AM WAY EXCITED TO GET HOME AND PLAY WII. There are only so many ways you can PRETEND TO HAVE A BAT OKAY before it just gets frusturating

And TP was OOT with funny waggle controls. Which is okay, but not thrilling, especially coming off of Sports. "Remember all the fun stuff you just did with Sports? Yeah? Well sit down and play this one like you did before we invented Wii!"

Kororinpa is still my favorite Wii game... and Zelda of course. Brawl, Galaxy, and the VC make the system worth it for me.

I felt the exact same way when I was playing Wii Boxing.

Throwing my arms around and having something on screen react brings out the kid in you but then it gets old after you figure out that twanging your arms forward with no sense of purpose, just to get a reaction on screen is all that was happening. In other words, it gets really shallow and boring after a while, same thing with Wii Baseball and all the other Wii Sport games.

My major problem with the wii right now is two fold.

1) I'm still not sold on the idea of motion control in most games. In a lot of games it comes off as inaccurate and unwieldy. Trauma Center did it right though, so I'm sure it's possible. The motions in Wiisports were just too generalized to keep my interest....and look at recent software like Boogie.

2) Original content. There is no reason to get excited about a port of Tomb Raider Anniversary when it's been out for 20 DOLLARS for three months.

But I have nothing other than that against the wii, as long as the games start looking at least as good as Metroid.

eh, MP looks pretty good on my TV still, at least compared to 90% of other wii games. I like what they did with the scale, and they added some nice effects. It looks like MP2, which looked fairly good already, with those added effects like missile trails, etc etc.

I still am not totally sold on the controls. I do not understand how "point to the edge to turn" controls could EVER be better than dual analog, but people who have played it like it...so I will reserve judgement.

...I've decided not to pick up a Wii until Smash Bros. Brawl comes out. I'll pick up Mario Galaxy, Fire Emblem: GoD, Metroid Prime 3, Trauma Center: New Blood and hopefully No More Heroes at the same time. MAYBE Super Paper Mario.

VC on Wii is BALLIN' tho.
I downloaded the PC Engine version of Gradius last week  :-*

It sucks.  It's still missing so much good stuff, plus where are the other systems they said that would be added??

I went on tonight and downloaded the much "heralded" system update.  OH WOW A FUCKING CLOCK IS ON THE MENU NOW.   :o :o :o  Why are people going nuts over this update again?

So anyway, I'm looking around and there still isn't jack shit.  Where is Rockman?  Where is Balloon Fight??

For a system that hasn't been on the market a whole year yet, the lineup is pretty good... sure its missing a lot of stuff (mainly RPGs), but I'm actually impressed at the selection on there, it's not just the tried and true classics, but a lot of reasonably-obscure games as well. I'm sure by the end of the Wii's lifespan, the VC library is gonna be nothing short of epic, with a lot of surprises.

LOL, VC sucks.  Not only are the games overpriced, but we also get zero enhancements and no online play.  If they're just going to dump ROMs, they should have already put a hell of a lot more games on the service already.  I enjoy using it to play a few old classics here and there, like Punch-Out!! and Bare Knuckle II, but VC sucks compared to Live and PSN.

Surprises?  We haven't even seen an announcement for an original game.  I don't expect much of anything from the "cheap" budget system.

This may be obvious. I mean ive always trolled Nintendo, but I love my GBA and DS. The thing is this. Why is it 'enough' for a Nintendo game to have 3 above average games, but if the PS3, or for some freak reason, the X360 put out only 3 above average games, the people would be outside the gates with torches?

Lowered expectations? Is the Wii merely accepted as a suppliment? Do you just not play games that much? Why do Nintendo consoles since the SNES get such a break from gamers? Its really boggling. I bought a gamecube a year ago and picked up all 12 good games that came out for it. I have 62 fucking ps2 games, 20+ psp games, a gajillion gba/ds games....I mean come on. N64/GameCube/Wii is a constant trainwreck with a few celebrity passengers like Smash Bros and Mario (sports/action title here).

The old Nintendo died with the SNES and original Gameboy, but its spirit lives on in the portables that followed.  I think the lowest point in Nintendo's history was with the N64 and Gameboy Color...so much crap was released it's amazing they didn't go down in flames.  People kept buying Nintendo's few original releases and Pokemon rehashes, which kept them going strong.

The N64 and Game Cube both "died" (I think "were cut off prematurely [along with the Xbox]" works better) early.  All signs seem to point towards the Wii ending up the same way.  It really is amazing that Nintendo can just release a Mario, Smash Bros., Zelda, and Pokemon game or three, and the system is then justified.  It's all in the name, I guess, but the Nintendo that exists today is clearly nothing like the Nintendo from the 80s and early 90s that all the nostalgic fanboys just can't let go.

Mind you I enjoyed releases on all the N-systems, and for a time was big into Game Cube (I always loved GBA from day one), until stuff just sort of stopped being released for it.  It took a year or so for the DS to get good, but it's got a solid library now.  The Wii is still unproven in my eyes; the best games for it are all ports, and that should be a warning sign.  I'm no graphics whore, but it's also disappointing to see games that are not even 480p get released for the system, plus it's just disappointing in general that the Wii doesn't go to at least 720p.  I don't think the system sucks, but it needs more original games that make good use of the controller, not gimmick-laden port shit.

Salty, bitter tears am fall.

You know what's great about not owning a Wii? More money to spend on games you like for other systems! You know what is ALSO great about not owning a Wii?  Not having to go on and on and on and on about how much it sux.

Since all you leet gamers seem to think Nintendo is discouraging "real" gaming, why keep discussing them? Why don't we have "lol my review of the Xavix - sux" threads?

The way I've looked at it (well, ever since I realized that N64 seemed to have lost the battle with PS1) is that as long as those few games meet my expectations, then everything is cool beans. Whatever other major game I'm interested in, I could buy it on another console.

I LOVED my N64. Looking back on it, the thing is utter shit, but I loved it and owned almost 100 games for it. Considering the N64 library, that's like at least 80 games that were total, complete, unplayable shit. But I loved it.

I didn't care for the majority of the N64 library, and I ignored the system in favor of the Saturn and PS1, which had many more of the types of games I was into. GC had a few decent titles, and I'll argue I had more fun with it and preferred its exclusives to the Xbox (I even liked GC more than N64), although PS2 got about 90% of my playtime last gen.

It's still too early to tell what's gonna happen with Wii... like what if all the RPGs/niche titles go there... then it'll probably be my main system believe it or not. I still find it funny that right now, 360 has the best RPG lineup, but after LO, nothing new in that genre has been announced. This gen is fucked up so far.

1. People ARE at the gates with torches.  Especially the Evilbore gates.

2. I'm not sure if there's just 3 above average games.

3. Speaking for myself, I can always rely on Nintendo to deliver the games, no matter what the success of the system is.  I can not rely on the same thing with Sony or MS.  I've bought more than Nintendo systems over the years, and at times been let down because the games didn't deliver for certain systems, except the Nintendo systems, because Mario/Metroid/Zelda/etc always delivered.  Even though I been playing games since I was a kid with an atari, I didn't really become a Nintendo fan until the N64 and Mario 64.  I had gotten non-Nintendo systems, because I had followed the juvenile and pathetic "I'm too mature for this kiddy shit!" mentality, but those more mature systems simply lacked fun.  I played Mario 64 and realized... I just want some fucking fun and Nintendo is the only company you can rely on for that.  My Jaguar, Gamegear and even Playstation had more mature or whatever, but the titles constantly let me down.

So after a giant block of tezt, reason 3 is because people know that Nintendo's big hitters will satisfy and are more reliable to do so than the other company's.

I kept it to one company because he was talking in that way...and TI doesn't have anything coming for this holiday.

But the whole notion of a "sure hit" is inane.

Insomniac/Team ICO/Polyphony are great for me under sony's wings, but they don't all have titles this fall.

The Ps2 I was much happier with than the PSOne.  It's just sorta risking it to me.  People here spend a lot at retail, but I don't like to.  I felt burned when I bought a Playstation for Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid, just to find out how overrated they were.  I bypassed the generally overrated(as I had learned too late before) RPGs with PS2 and got the Dynasty Warrior games, Ico and Katamari.  I also got Guilty Gear and in general my purchases were not letdowns.

Because of their quality.

And Bioware to be trusted? They've fallen off for me.  KOTOR was one of my big disappointments last gen.    It's amazing they had towns full of wandering people, yet the game felt so listless and dead.

I'm back and forth on a Wii.  When I tell people I want one, they tell me why, when I'm someone who doesn't like Zelda and not into RE4.  Well, the type of stuff I want on Wii is mostly short games, like Wario Ware, Elebits, Super Swing Golf, etc.  In the short term, I mostly want DDR Hottest Party, Fire Emblem, NiGHTs, and SSB Brawl (and maybe Super Mario Galaxy.  I hated Sunshine and didn't like NSMB on DS, so I'm a tad unsure).  Most tell me that Wii has many of the same stuff as PSP/PS2.  So I dunno, the main reason I want one is because I never had the chance to play one.  Being big into games myself, not being able to play a console/handheld really bugs me (because I'm all about playing games on all consoles/handhelds).

Problem is that I only the money for a PSP 2000 or Wii, the rest of the year.  I'm kind of leaning towards PSP 2000 because I hate the current PSP D-pad, and have over 50 PSP games (playing on the TV would be nice), and I wouldn't have to buy more games with it (compared to a Wii).  But then again, I feel a little ashamed at times to tell my friends I don't have a Wii, because they'd think I'd own one (I'd say a decent percentage of my online friends have a Wii and they badly want me to get one).

I'm just completely on the fence about it.  I'll eventually get one for sure, but I'm not really sure if I should wait, or buy now.  My biggest reason for wanting one now is VC and being able to play my GC games (I normally leave my GC at home and won't take it to college).
