Abrader does "the descent"
« on: August 16, 2007, 10:53:54 PM »
Aye - I have seen alot of dissaponting berg horror movies lately.

- those horrorfest fukkin double features on XBL (the one with the haunted house was 'ok' - especially that part where it takes the girlfriend like 30 seconds to recognize her boyfriend: staring right at him ;))

- Hills Have Eyes remake II :( :( :( a shit movie with one good idea 2 'decent' scenes and unnecessary distinguished mentally-challenged fellow rape :(

- The Abandoned - abandon it :(

I watched the Descent on BluRay.

The visuals were amazing. I have been caving before and they really do a good job of recreating some of the clausterphobia and other elements - you can tell it is stage prop cave, and you can tell a few scenes are shot in the same exact set spots with different lighting - but visually it delivers.

The girls seem a little unrealistic...at one part near the beginning one of the characters says "im an english teacher, not tomb raider" - and well they really tried to make all of the girls tomb raider...all have decent sized breasts and wear tight clothes...there is the asian chick, the irish chick, the british chick, and blondes, brunettes etc...something for everyone...For fun I recommending picking your pony early and bet on who survives and who doesnt ;) Anyway- point being that none of them look like the kinda ladies who would embark on a trott like this - they are too sexy and you wonder why whatever hauntes them doesnt want to sex them instead of end their lives. Id personally let them all live and work off the treaspassing charges ;) One character even tries to go mildly angelina jolie 6/10th into it which delivers a slight yet enjoyavble element of camp to an otherwise serios flikk.

No happy ending ;) - decent gore (unrated version) - suspense - mystery - good sets - tight ass - an amazing 'pit scene' - gets you some adreneline at a few points.

If you have been let down by the shytfests i listed at the top of this post, I recommend you check out the descent.

Abrader, I think there's actually a happy ending.  The sad ending is the original one that the UK audience saw but in the American theatrical release,
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the heroine gets away.
[close]
It seems that the happy ending is canon now because they're making a sequel.  I actually think the cast was pretty good.  Sure, they were good looking women but they looked like they were tough and athletic.  Women that are into x-sports in real life are not so different from the women in Descent.  Overall, I thought it's probably one of the best horror movies of the last 5 years.  Which, sadly, doesn't mean much.  Can you recommend any good horror flicks?  I asked but didn't get much response.

The sad ending sounds better - ;)

I cant really think of any other movies I have seen recently I could recommend...

My biggest letdown of late was the BlackChristmas remake :(

I was so hyped I went and saw in on Christmas day when it came out.

Having said that, if you havent seen this...

I highly recommend...AVOID the remake - NEVER EVER WATCH
In fact dont even read anything about the 2006 BlackChristmas remake.

Another olde classic fav of mine that still delivers is;

what can you recommend for me?

I've seen Black Christmas and it was pretty entertaining until the last 10 mins.  The ending was just not convincing.  Haven't checked out Hell House yet.  You sound like you've seen many horror flicks already, I'm not sure what I can recommend to you.  Do you watch Japanese or Chinese flicks too?  The Japanese movies usually don't make any sense at the end but they are really good with atmosphere.

I remember thinking Session 9 was decent....

I also remember some emo film school snobs watching it with me that hated it - keep in mind these are the same people who think a low budget esoteric wanna be perforance art film where people are dressed like battlezoids in cardboard boxes mime-ing to godzillia movie soundtracks is brill.

Iv yet to see one I really liked.....thrill me? whats the best (and something I can get without having to hire a private chinaman to swim to japan and buy from a special vender in a deserted chiba city warehouse)

I do like atmosphere...generally flix with unknown, unseen and un-explained are best...... poltergeist and ghost like movies being the best.

A flik I enjoyed that wasnt too terribly scary was "H.P. Lovecrafts: Necronomican" - its a collection of three or so short stories and I liked them all....

The Hong Kong flick Inner Senses was pretty decent.  It gets worse about 3/4 of the way but it's still better than most Asian flicks.  Pulse, a Japanese movie is decent also but don't expect to make sense out of it.  I think they've made an American version of it.  Have you seen Hostel?  It's not strictly "horro" but it's not too bad.  I though it was going to be crap but it's a pretty good B movie.

yeah.  The Japanese pulse was decent for the atmosphere and effects.  Also, unlike other Japanese flicks, the victims actually try to fight back.  I"m hate how Jap horror characters always do nothing but whimper in fear.

Inner Senses was kinda scary if you have a wild imagination because you imagine that kind of stuff happening to you.  It also has an interesting explanation for why people see ghosts.

The Eye was pretty good but it wasn't scary at the end.   Did you see Eye 2?  It had some good moments but overall was a big drop in quality.  Your edgy attitude will fit right in with the chicks in The Descent.
