BIOSHOCK BAD LUCK SUNDAY: RED RINGS!
« on: August 17, 2007, 10:46:42 PM »
Okay, so I just moved across the country (Fucking AGAIN) and with Bioshock so close tor elease, I decided to chance it and lug my 360 across 6 states and 2 flights. I left behind clothes, books, cookware, anything non-essential to lug the 360 and it's brutish powerbrick to my new, shitty, broken, sweltering apartment. I put out 250$ for a new LCD to properly experience BioShock on my budget, plugged in the 360 and WHAMMO FUCK YOU CONSUMER RED RINGS YOU FUCK.

It could be my fault- I lugged the shit and I gave it to the not-so-tender care of airport luggage folks. But still. I packed in towels, bubble wrap, yadda yadda. I just can't catch a fucking break lately. BioSadness.

Wait. Is a blinking 4-bit red ring an A/V issue and not system failure?

there's probably a catalog somewhere that says all the different red lights.

since you're problem's solved I'll hijack this thread, if I want to play in HD, would I be better off using a VGA cable and playing on a 1366X768 CRT or should I get a 22"/24" LCD?

What does one ring mean?

there was a thread on gaf that seemed to explain all the combinations and what may have caused the rings.

How big is the CRT? I say stick with the CRT if its comparable in size to the LCDs you want to purchase

CRT is 19", looking at 22" LCDs.

Eh, I say go for the LCDs then. Bigger is always better! But I would just save up for a 30+ incher, not sure if you want to stay sub $400 (since your looking at 22" LCDs).

I can't imagine playing my PS3/360 on a PC setup (Computer desk and Console hooked up to it)

Many 24 inch LCD monitors actually offer better image quality than LCD tvs.  Pixel density is much higher in a small LCD monitor and monitors tend to have less ghosting and backlight bleeding than TVs.  But like you said, size is an issue.  A sharper image doesn't really make up for a smaller image.  But if you want to upgrade your PC experience as well as be able to play PS3/360 games, a new widescreen mon is a good option.

CRT is 19", looking at 22" LCDs.

Why are you using 1360x768 w/ a crt?  I didn't think that there was a widescreen CRT at 19".  A 24" LCD is much better than a 22" and worth the extra money.  24 inchers all support 1080p while 22 inch has a funny 1680x1050 resolution which doesn't scale quite properly w/the 360 or PS3.

actually it's 1024X768 and 17".

how good would a 360 game look on it compared to LCDs if the screen size was the same?

CRT tends to look sharper even w/ a lower resolution.  480P on a CRT looks very close to 720p on a LCD.  The CRT will also have better contrast and zero ghosting.  LCDs are also bad at displaying anything that is not in its native resolution, which is why I suggest you go with a 1080P 24" monitor instead of a 22".  The strenghts of a LCDs are that there is very little reflection in a LCD so you can play dark games in broad daylight and most LCDs are widescreen, unlike most CRTS.  If you get a LCD, try to avoid buying a glossy coated one, even though it looks nice at first sight.  The glossiness creates many annoying reflections that you'll noitce when you start playing dark material.

yeah I don't really have too much of a problem with reflection so I guess I should go with LCD if I want widescreen.
