The Godfather was the only good movie out of the trilogy
« on: August 19, 2007, 12:29:44 AM »
Fuck, I just watched up to the second part and wow I completely disliked Part II.

I think its because the way Michael was portrayed in the second part. I wasn't expecting sugar gumdrops raining down from the skies as far as glorification goes but shit, it was utterly depressing. The way it ended was bullshit too  :( whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Was it supposed to lead in to the third part? Its amazing how things were resolved at the end of the movie but it still felt open...da fuck? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Wow. II is nearly as good as I.

Required ratings:

I - 10/10
II - 10/10
III - 8.5/10

It didn't sit well with me...and...I can't really put my finger on why

Maybe because in the original, it showed more of the the plans in action, plans being talked about and we see what comes of it. In Part II, it was more about Michael's grip on the family and the whole dealings he had with the Jew, I was totally turned off to it.

I still need to sit down and watch the second from beginning to end, but much of what I've seen has been kinda ok. But then again, I've seen some absolutely classic scenes from the movie as well, mainly

I know Sophia Coppola was absolutely horrible, but she wasn't really in that many scenes.  She ruined half of Andy Garcia's scenes though  :'(

Here's some Cliff Clavin type shit for you - I share a birthday with John Cazale.  It's weird - he was only in five movies before he died in 1978 (of bone cancer, what a horrible way to go), but every single one of them was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.  He's the only actor in Motion Picture history with that distinction.

well I usually HATE gangster films if they're fictional but I thought the way they made godfather one and two made sense.  I never saw three so I don't know if there was any point in making that one as far as following the storyline of the books.  godfather one had nearly no backstory and I really don't get what would make it stand out as a crime movie for the time other then the setting perhaps?  the sequel was more about the backstory and had few story developments but they were boring in my opinion.  Maybe it was the second one that outlined a realistic crime empire and how there was backstory to it that made them classics.

I think you said you read the books, did they butcher anything they shouldn't have?

Didn't really butcher anything but Coppola really changed the pacing of the book around. Instead of going to Vito's backstory within the first Godfather, they leave it to the second one.

He also really pulled back on some characters backstories (like Luca Brasi and Woltz). Thats to be expected though since its a movie adaptation. Some scenes felt really rushed too. I wasn't expecting Luca to be killed so quickly and Michael's time in Italy felt shortlived in the movie. Once again though, movies need to change this around to not make them 8 hour epics!

I found the first Godfather highly enjoyable. I also think my dislike for the second one was seeing Michael Corleone turn into a dick and fall from grace. Totally fucked up in the shadow of his father...I can't believe he had his brother killed and pulled away from the Corleone bloodline. What a dick!

The really stupid part was the end of number 2 was the same as number 1, just a bunch of deaths/assassinations.

And that part with petangeli was pure bullshit.

Michael going eviler made sense since he spent around a decade I think just active in the mob family getting people killed.

The Mario Puzo books were dimestore trash.  Coppola took that crap and came up with a classic, gotta give him credit for that.  The second movie is even better than the first.  The third movie is a huge floating turd.

Eh, I liked Puzo's Godfather. The movie was good but its not like Coppola widely deviated from the book and made it his own.

Not in terms of story, but the atmosphere and tone of the film is totally different from Puzo's pulp.

I guess its me being emotionaly vested in the "Michael Corleone" character. It fucking sucked seeing him pushing the family away and fuck? Kill his brother? UGH, I was disgusted by the character! But it was a more realistic take on the Mafioso culture, I would think. It made me sad!

The Vito (Godfather) flashbacks were good though. Robert De Niro am GOD

You should have been disgusted with him in the first movie as well, to a certain extent. Michael originally wanted to do the right thing for his family: protect it. And through that he became warped, taking things too far by killing all his enemies, all his rivals, and even those who abused his family (son in law). By the end of the first Godfather Michael as introduced in the beginning of the movie is gone

What I saw from GIII wasn't as horrible as people say tho. Bud said it best: when judged on its own merits and not the previous two classics, it's a solid enough film. That being said I need to see it beginning to end.

From what I can tell critics didn't hate it that much. It didn't seem to get slammed nearly as much as the Star Wars prequels for instance

Gorgeous cinematography; Pacino actually trying to act; Robin Williams doing the creepy thing he does so well.  But Hillary Swank kinda did a shitty job in her role.  I haven't seen the original Swedish (?) version, mebbe I should.  It's probably Nolan's worst film thus far, but still decent.  I don't think I'd ever watch it again, however.

Have I ever given it a rating tho? I don't remember. I liked a lot of what I saw, but the church stuff was pretty boooring.

I haven't seen all of II or III

Insomnia: Yeah I missed the beginning of the movie but say the rest. Williams was freaking creepy. Especially as he described how he killed the girl, with no emotion

PD did say he didn't see the second one from beginning to end.  I saw the first two in order to see what the hype is about.  I'd have to agree with BT that it's the setting that was good about the movies and I assume books.

I don't get what kind of gayness would make somebody compare michael in the first movie to the second.  his wife was killed and the author wanted to show what made him order all the people to be killed.  the second one was about what made his father willing to enforce  ordered killings.  the movies tried to show that they had completely different motivations.

Actually, TVC is right, Godfather III gets NOTICEABLY worse upon it's last scene, unfortunately.  Talk about unintentional humor and joy.

And I've never seen or heard someone bitch about Fredo getting offed.  He had his chances, the moron.  If everyone would quit trying to fuck with Michael, he wouldn't have to do these drastic things.
