I vote for Abrams.

Nolan's movies are good ideas, awkwardly executed. His fans overlook the lame parts (usually the third act) to focus on the parts that work. There's stuff to like in his movies, but overall, they fall short of delivering on their great promise.

On the other hand, Abrams' movies are bad ideas, confusingly executed. His fans use the fact that his movies and TV shows make no fucking sense to argue that "you just don't understand" or "wait until all is revealed." This continues until the fans themselves realize it was all smoke monsters and mirrors and quietly, sheepishly move on--usually around season 5.

In conclusion, The Dark Knight will be campy fun disguised beneath a layer of "serious" grit, and Cloverfield will be 2 hours of Abrams masturbating himself raw at his own cleverness.

how exactly is nolan overrated? insomnia, memento and bb were awesome and supposedly the prestige is awesome, too. and tdk is going to be the comicbook adaptation of 2k8.

jj abrams has directed mi3 and a couple of lost & alias (lol) episodes.

I used to really like Nolan--Memento was clever and fun, and his short film Following is also enjoyable.

But:

- Insomnia is poo.
- Batman Begins is ridiculous if you try to rewatch it.
- The Prestige ended up being a so-so double, instead of the easy home run any movie with David Bowie as Tesla should be.

He's done nothing but disappoint since his freshman effort! Some were big disappointments, some were small, but all were less than they could have been.

Nolan wins this easily. He's directed 1 round the board great movie, but from the noise you hear online you'd think he was Orson Welles.

I dunno, I enjoyed Batman Begins. And I think it's fun. But it's not serious or dark or gritty. It's as goofy as the Burton flicks, just with better cast.

The way people talk about the movie you would think it's some kind of Jonathan Demme-hemmed psychological portrait of what drives a man to act outside the law as opposed to just nananananananana nanananananana BAT-MAN!

I still don't see how Abrams is overrated--I don't think he's overrated and I don't think he's underrated. He had very little to do with Lost outside of the (yes, excellent) pilot, and his last major movie, MI3, was a huge disappointment. Alias, while being a fave among critics in its early days, lost public attention fairly quickly, requiring a fairly extensive retooling in the second season.

I mean, I guess his name being attached to Lost has gotten him some hype, but his involvement in that series was one of its best moments, so I can't see him being overrated because of Lost.

Other way around. Most of that shit is stuff he wrote. His two-non writing, just directing credits are MI3 and 'Trek but I think he wrote on trek too but I am too lazy to look.
