Does anyone remember the '80s movie Parents?
« on: August 19, 2007, 11:32:20 PM »

I watched this movie when it played on basic cable a couple of times.  I must have been ten or eleven years old, and this movie fucked me up BIG TIME.  It's so incredibly disturbing.  I suppose it was meant to play as either a horror film or as a black comedy, but it's neither funny nor explicitly horrifying.  It's just...grotesque.  It's about this kid who starts to suspect that his parents may be cannibals.  There are lots of bizarre close-ups of meat, both raw and in the process of being cooked, which turned me off meat for a while.

This movie is fucking freaky.

creepshow fucked me up as a 10-year-old kid, especially the father's day bit. the plot was basically EVIL FATHER COMES BACK FROM GRAVE AND KILLS EVERYONE, FIN. the nihilistic nature of it really disturbed me!

Parents has some scenes that are just disturbing in the way they are shot.  Like a dinner scene where the dialogue/acting is completely normal, but then out of nowhere are these weird shots that last for several seconds of steak, or blood leaking out of the steak, or people chewing food...and you start to wonder WHAT IS THAT MYSTERY MEAT?  I know it sound stupid, but it's disturbing when something that is usually a succulent dish is treated as something mysterious and grotesque.

The one part of Creepshow that I found fucked up was the story about the lake with the living oil in it...the kids are on this wooden raft thing and they're just hanging out, having fun, and then the oil starts picking them off, one by one...at the end, one of the kids swims towards shore and seems to escape and just then the oil LUNGES OUT, grabs him, and drags him back into the water.

Creepshow 1 and 2 don't blend together because one rocks and one sucks.  Easy to tell the difference.  It's like telling Chimes at Midnight from The Prestige.

Which one was the one with Stephen King playing the redneck farmer who gets infected by alien spores?  That one was great.

I actually think that's the weakest part of 1, mainly because King is a terrible, terrible actor.  It's almost as if they asked a high school drama student to act like a hick.

The best one is the one with the monster in the box.  And Adrienne Barbeau(bot).

Okay, I just looked it up in Wikipedia.  The one I was talking about was The Raft and it was basically the only good one in Creepshow 2.  TVC was right, the other stories in Creepshow 2 blow, whereas all the ones in the first one range from pretty good to great.

Has anyone seen Stephen King's directorial debut, MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE?

I haven't seen it in years, but what gets me more than any potentially poor direction (I don't remember it being excessively poorly directed) is that King chose to adapt such a distinguished mentally-challenged story in the first place.  Machines made sentient by a meteor?  Retardo.

You're right, I was just thinking that Maximum Overdrive's story is at least more plausible than Transformers, with a mysterious gigantic space cube causing soda machines to turn into sentient robots.  At least the machines in Maximum Overdrive don't spontaneously transform!

I actually, for years, had nightmares involving that Creepshow part. In the the dream, not only was it more vivid but wasn't campy...oh man was it horrible. In my head I can still remember the image, theres a dock, a green tinge in the lake water and an area where the water is pitch black...

 :-\

Did Creepshow also have the guy that messes with the meteorite and green fern starts growing all over the place?

That's the one which Stephen King stars in.

...so, I take it nobody's seen Parents, huh?  I have the urge to seek it out on DVD.
