Quick computer help plz
« on: August 19, 2007, 11:38:16 PM »
Alright Smooth Groove linked me to a possible fix to the problem I've been having for some time. Recap: I get an "infinite loop nv4_disp" error, and the screen breaks up when I move the mouse.

Smooth Groove told me to download Driver Cleaner Professional which I did. Now...I'm a bit confused with the directions :-\

Step 1: Unplug nic card or modem from net or disconnect

I'm hesitant about unconnecting the modem from the wall. When it says I can also "disconnect" what is that referring to? This is a noob question but I'm stomped. The last thing I want to do is pull the modem out the wall and have to deal with Comcast potentially.

My plan: I plan on uninstalling the display drivers, rebooting my computer, then running this Driver Cleaner program.

Someone's put explosives in your PC.  Whatever you do, don't hit the 'DELETE' button.  Just stay calm and wait for John McClane.

First off, I don't know if they're talking about an internal or external modem that they want you to unplug/disconnect.

Secondly, what's the problem with unplugging your cable modem from the wall? I have to unplug mine at least once a week because the fucking thing stops working. Nothing is going to happen. Comcast won't come to your door and spank your ass red because you unplugged their modem from the wall. When you plug the thing in, it re-connects to the internet. There's no magic hoops you have to jump through.

It says NIC card or modem from the internet.  I'm guessing it means... just disconnect the ethernet cable from the back of your PC.  get it completely off the internet.

Whats weird is, why would he need to do that if its just cleaning up the NV drivers? Did you mistakingly have Driver Cleaner set to fuck with your Ethernet device?

yeah, that's kind of weird that they ask you to unplug it when you're doing your display drivers

Ok I just disabled the internet connection in Network Connections. After that I followed the directions and now my screen is no longer breaking up, and I was able to access StarCraft/WoW without it messing up. I'll really know whether it's fixed next time I turn on my computer; if it comes on during the first try, it's fixed. As of right now it seems like this has finally worked!

Seems like the problem has been solved. Thanks Smooth Groove, and everyone else who helped :)
