'Game Widows' -- WOW IS A HOMEWRECKER

Still, click through the pages of the widow support sites and you'll find plenty of terrible tales told by those living with players unable to control their habit. There's the woman whose husband left her in the hospital two hours after their baby was born so he could go home and play. There's the bed-ridden wife whose husband wouldn't take care of her because he was so busy gaming.

But it's the overwhelming number of relatively ordinary tales of loneliness and despair in the wake of a mate's compulsive gaming that make this phenomenon truly heartbreaking.

Well, there's no question that people who have addictive personalities can get hooked on something like WoW just like they would on something like gambling....It sounds funny, but I'm sure that there are people out there who do suffer if they have a spouse who refuses to communicate or spend time with them and prefers spending his time in front of a monitor.

This is like an episode of oprah

One of the reasons my best friend ended up getting divorced was 'cause he was suffering depression and all he'd do at home was sit in front of his PC playing Diablo II and EverQuest.  It contributed to the communication problems he was already having with his then-wife.  So, y'know, that shit happens.  It's not just the media sensationalizing shit.

Well, obviously it was partly my friend's fault, but the game was like, an outlet, or something.

Shouldn't this be on the gaming forum tho?

My friend? I have no clue.  He could cast magic, though, he showed me some cool lightning bolt type shit he could do.  I've never played the Diablo games myself, I tend to avoid PC stuff.

i dated a girl who left her boyfriend for me, largely in part because he was addicted to Everquest. Granted, she did end up leaving me two weeks later and moving 700 miles away just to get back with him, but... yeah.

Blizzard purposely makes things needlessly long to extend their subscriptions, but being unable to just turn off a frickin game is the player's fault.

I am one hundred percent sure as the online game spectrum expands and more and more people are brought into the fold, this will become an accepted psychological disorder.

There will always be a segment that will question that and laugh at folks who can't simply turn the power button off, just as there are people that don't think alcoholism is a disease ("just stop drinkin lol!).  But I think that EverQuest and especially World of WarCraft have shown that there is some kind of mental disorder attached to people who cannot control this habit.

You know what's funny?  There're probably a bunch of people from Gaf and other forums who are laughing at this story yet they do nothing but read and post at those forums all day.

I lol because I've been playing this shit on and off (but mostly on) for 3 years, and it's never been to a point where it's affected my life. These people are fucking pathetic. No wonder I get shit for playing WoW. The one drawback is raiding; committing to being on from 5:30-9 Monday-Thurs is easy to make now, but I can already tell if I want to work full time while going to college at the same time, I'll have to drop this game. So I will. It's not a big fucking deal. The only people I can see who are this severely attached to the game are those with serious social disorders.

It kinda wacky to think about someone being THAT into something. Ive played WOW since three months or so after its launch and ive never been that way. Then again I dont have that kind of personality I spose.

the time commitment is not worth the small chance for a marginal practical stat boost from the upper-tier drops. what do you do with that eq? raid MORE?

There's honestly not much more to do in the game. PvP has become a fucking imbalanced mess, and arena is just as time consuming if you want to get anywhere. 2 and 1/2 hours a day is not that much time spent on a game.

But it's fun. As stupid as it sounds, it feels like I'm doing constructive, because I know if I wasn't doing this I'd read a little bit more and probably troll forums or piss away my life watching TV. I get pleasure out of progressing, even if it's all a bunch of bullshit.

I still don't know how people can get so attached though.

It is fun to raid but it's too time consuming.  I've moved to a 3 night per week schedule which should be enough time to get my fix in but not so much that I don't have time for anything else.  This is below the "required" amount of nights of raiding per week but wtf are they going to do about it, I'm a healer.

Out of curiousity, how much time would it take on average to acquire 5000 gold in WoW? i'm just trying to see how much time someone wasted to bang a girl they could've fucked for free on Craigslist.

Depends how many people are on your realm or whatever, but if you really wanted it, probably 2 weeks minimum. 5000 gold is worth about $350.
And that girl was fugly.
