But you've barely played Bioshock...   What happened to you and MAF's game tastes this week?  Must be the game fuel.

I haven't been drinking game fuel.  Space Giraffe is perfect.  Replayable.  Compulsive.  Awesome looking.  It just takes some getting used to due to the visuals.  Once you encounter the common elements of gameplay and know what warning signs to watch out for, the game gets super awesome.

Give it a fair shot.  It's only 400 points.  You do have to spend like 20 minutes to figure out what's going on, since it was coded by like, people from Woodstock.

Despite what demi says, CoD4 is pretty great.  Great visuals, great maps (all 3 of them are great and different.  You get claustrophobia and open areas), solid controls (you can tweak sensitivity among 4 levels, although I didn't find a sweet spot, it worked fine enough).  There are lots of guns, and due to the great create-a-class and tweaks systems, they've done some balancing to make sure that there really isn't one uber machine gun or rifle or whatever.  Most guns have advantages and disadvantages.  The M16 is super powerful, but you can only use burst fire.  The M4 is a great automatic, but it's not very accurate outside of close range, making it suitable for claustrophobic maps.  There are also a wide range (well, wide for an FPS) of accessories for weapons, ranging from scopes to grenade launchers.  Want a laser scope instead of iron sights?  You can do that (but you usually have to exchange a perk/tweak slot).

Perks (or tweaks or whatever they are called) also change up the fps formula.  There's of course the famous Last Stand, which allows you to pull out your sidearm as you fall to the ground dead, so you can pull off some vengeance on the fucker that just took you out, and maybe some of his friends.  There are also a range of standard health and accuracy improvements, improving the ability to hold your breath as a sniper, etc.  There are lots of different tweaks. . .I haven't unlocked a whole lot of them.

Unlocking stuff works on the Battlefield model.  You gain points from doing shit in matches (including getting bonus points just for completing matches, rewarding peeps who stick around to the end even if their team is losing), and once you rank up, you get a new unlock, like a new weapon, perk, accessory, challenge, option, whatever.

Challenges are kind of like in-game achievements.  You get some experience points towards rank up for completing challenges.  A typical challenge would be to get 25 kills with a certain kind of machine gun, or 100 headshots with a sniper rifle.  Typical achievement stuff.  Busting out the challenges makes you level pretty fast.

The gameplay is pretty solid, as is.  If there weren't only 3 maps, I'd think this could be a final product.  The only significant bug (and it's not really that major) involves getting stuck while strafing on stairs, and it's limited to one map.  Oh, also, when you get killed, you are treated to a pretty sweet kill cam, showing you exactly where the fucker that pwned you was hiding.  I like this feature a lot, because although I love fpses, I suck ass at them, and I hate getting killed by someone and then not knowing where the dude was hiding.  That shit is aggravating.

Custom classes are pretty sweet, but as of the beta, it seems like they don't get their own challenges.  It kind of makes sense when you play the game (challenges are tied to specific classes), but it kind of doesn't encourage you to play with custom classes until you have a ton of shit unlocked.  I guess that makes sense, too.  Still, even at early levels, it is super sweet to bust out with your own modified super soldier, armed with the guns ad perks you picked.

Overall, the game is looking fucking excellent.  Halo had better bring a lot more than Halo 2 did if it wants me to spend any multiplayer time on it when this is the prime MP competition this winter.

Also, the game looks amazing.  Amazing particle effects.  Amazing animation.  LOTS of death animations.  Only weak spot with animation is that the Last Stand animation kind of gives away you are doing the ability, giving enemies the heads up to bail or destroy your body.

ha ha, Thomas is wrong.  Again.

Thanks for the info, TVC.  That's how a preview should be written.

Cod4 sounds great.  Looks like the MP mode is much deeper than most games.  My concern is that the game might be tough for people who don't have time to play a lot since it sounds like you could get significantly more powerful by leveling up.

Battlefield 2 has the same problem, but what other way is there to reward players that pour their time into multiplayer?  Meaningful way, I mean.

I still really, really want an updated BF1942 for the 360, with a combination of the best maps from BF1942 and all the expansions, along with some of the best user-made maps (reward those guys for keeping the community alive for so long, EA), and a built in crazy settings editor so you can set up games with low-gravity, "planes only," and other shit like that right from the interface.  Call it BF1942 Platinum, price it at $30-$40, and I'm sold.  I want to play the game with prettier graphics but without all the BS cheats and hacks that comes with trying to get in a decent match nowadays.

Ok, I've put more time into COD4, I am now Level 9. I think it's starting to click, I'm actually enjoying myself now. I like that I get rewarded for playing. The Challenges are also cool for those who are proficient in certain guns, you get better models and trinkets. I'm definitely buying this, and I can see myself diving in some multi matches with my XBL peepz.

The graphics for the most part haven't really wow'd me, though I like that it is smooth 60 frames.

I love shanking bitches with the knife, it has this 1 second pause that is so nice, cause it's like you're just tenderly slicing their flesh open.

i can't really pin down the scoring hook to this game.  There is some sort of convoluted bonus system, that much I can see, but I'm not sure exactly what it is.  The worst tutorial in the history of games didn't help either.

Getting high score multiplier is tied to timing your jump pods so you can bull rush (run into) enemies that are directly on the line with you.  It takes some experimentation to learn the game.  I think it is pretty fun.  Read the help text in game--it cites a specific easy to bull rush place in the game.  Once you learn that mechanic, your scores climb high.

Thanks, Demi.  You're a pretty knowledgeble gamer when you're not just talking about achievements.   COD4 sounds impressive so far.  It looks like they took the best parts of BF and then made it into a more exciting game.  I hope the final version can maintain 60fps even with many people playing.  FPS games really feel a lot different at 60fps.  After playing MOH:A and Halo2 (pc) at 60 fps, the Killzone 2 video looks really slow.  As beautiful as Killzone 2 and Halo 3 are, 30 fps does detract from the visceral feel of intense battle.

Killzone 2 really isn't looking all that hot.  Even ignoring the iffy texturework, it seems to oud-Id Id at overuse of one color.  All the screenshots are so grey and black, and whether it's for stylistic effect or not, it looks really suspect. Some of the screenshots almost look washed out because of the limited color palette.

Some of the model work, particularly on the human characters and specifically their faces, is good looking, though.

space giraffe rules once you figure out the scoring system -- though there are moments of absolute zero visibility that i'm not too fond of. haven't played much, but my score's now at 18 million. sticking to one credit. drohne on xbla. ADD ME 4 SCORE ATTACK FUN

i really can't motivate myself to play bioshock. what with the slow pace and the digging in trashcans for items and the limited ammo and the less than enthralling combat and the hacking minigame oh god the hacking minigame. i've barely made it out of the tutorial area, so i'm not actually going to criticize it yet. i can appreciate the artistry of the world design. and it's got more ideas than the libraries of some consoles. but yeah...i just don't want to play it at all

The hacking minigame must be a total PITA on the xbox controller. It was tedious on the PC, where mouse drag and drop at least made it go pretty fast.

Maybe it's a vram limitation?  Because I've heard the levels in Killzone 2 are really large and when you're faced with a console's limitations, there are compromises that have to be made.  I still think much of the game looks quite impressive.  It's like an advanced version of Gear's engine.  They've also been meticulate with the little details such as the thunderstorm in the background and the debris from fire explosions.  Geometry is also good even though the character models are obvious downgrades from the target render.  There also seems to be no slowdown so far despite how hot the action gets, although I do wish they had try to get 60fps instead of 30.  There's some tearing but it looks tolerable.  The main criticism I have of the visuals is that the animation still seems very stiff at this point.  It looks like you're fighting a bunch of robots even though they're human enemies.

I meant that it works well in contrasting the enemy soldier's eyes.  Otherwise, it's just your standard fare bleak war-zone environment color scheme.  Killzone 1 looks the same:

I've heard that they're using an extreme amount of post processing when it comes to muting out colors in the environment. I think its when the game was first revealed at E307. I remember something along the lines of the game looking completely different when all those effects were turned off.

they demonstrated last week in germany KZ2 and the reason it looks too bland is because while the colors in the environments look normal, they post-processing overdoes it. They showed it with it turned on and off.  They said it changes depending the environment and the mood they're trying to set.  I mean it isn't that colorful of a game but it's the post-processing that makes it too dark/metallic.

post-processing does an effect that affects everything on screen.  it changes how the colors and the lighting work.  go watch the gamespot video of the 17 or so minute Liepzig demonstration.
