MAF's PAX Topic - With Pictures
« on: August 26, 2007, 12:45:56 AM »
I'm going to say this right off. I didn't know what to expect. I had attended E3 back in 1999 when it was a different beast entirely. Frankly, its a been a while since i've been 'among my own'. PAX 2007 really opened my eyes to the new direction gaming expos are heading in, and it was a bit of a wake up call. In short, I am not anything like the gamers of today.

I want to be alone playing games. I love games, dont get me wrong, but the current focus of PAX is the idea of collaborative gaming experiences. This is due in part to the fact that on this is the end of the show, this is what the Penny Arcade Duo can deliver without dependencies on the various gaming publishers and developers. I attended today with the goal of primarily hitting up the exhibition hall and seeing some 'new stuff', not taking part in tournaments and round table discussions.

But that's still what PAX is currently all about. The exhibition hall, while a great representation of the biggest names in console AND pc gaming, was littered with kiosks that mostly existed to show the current catalog of games already released by said developer or publisher. It seemed like PC devs seemed far more open showing newer things at this expo, as Warhammer Online, and Witcher, and the Company of Heroes expansion (with GORGEOUS DX10 effects) were on display for all to see. I did see things like VF5 360 (looks identical) and Castle Crashers! OMG!  but by and large, it was a 'been there, done that' experience. The level of swag was also pretty meh. Posters and booklets, demo disks and posts cards were handed out en masse.

I planned to only attend for 3 hours or so because word from Friday was that the concerts were almost something to give up entirely on cause they could only hold so many people and it was first come first serve. After I gawked at the exhibition hall I moved on to the private gaming lounges, which all seemed to be empty. Each was oriented on a theme and required that I register or else an enforcer, as they call them, would GET ME.

So I got bored quick and found a table in the cafe and joined some friends who were chowin' down on subway while I continued to subject myself to Luminous Arc. IM IN CHAPTER 22. After about an hour of kickin back, as gamers seem prone to at PAX, I hit a mexican bar with drinky and seph and gorged on mexican food and glasses of Fat Tire Ale.

Some highlights:

First off, you fuckers better thank me when Castle Crashers comes out cause I bought all four knights and thats not cheap! They said they needed paychecks and they need to sell shit. IM GULLIBLE. All spending money gone within 5 minutes of exhibition hall!

I couldn't look this guy in the face. Granted there was the guy with nothing but a loincloth on later in the afternoon. YUK PEOPLE.

My cats newest TOY lol.

Penny Arcades game. Didnt actually stop to look at it.

Given to me as a gift after blowing money on the castle crasher knights :(

GAMES!

EVERY fucking con, I swear!

Pissed my pants a little.

Wanted these a little.

ACTION SHOT OF TABLE TOP GAMING! These guys were everywhere!

In short, wait a few years if you wanna see unreleased CONSOLE games at PAX en masse. This show is, until the corps are willing to go all in, made by the fans, for the fans.

That big daddy should come home with me. Just imagine how many children you could scare on halloween night with that thing.

Drohne: Apparently they were doing drawings to give away 10 cases of the stuff. I highly doubt real ninja masters live off of ramen :(

I guess Nvidia was doing some nice giveaways with their videocards. I am sure there were a lot of contests n stuff I was not aware of cause I spent a mere 3 hours there. I just cant get into the FEVER anymore like I used to.

Starscream: The big daddy statue ruled.

I never understood why so many people recommended ninja scroll to me in the past, especially when I finally DID see it.

Starscream: Unforunately no :(

Looks a bit disappointing.  It doesn't even seem to close to the spectacle that was E3.  I attended the last 2 "real" e3s which were like Disneyland for videogame nerds.  PAX, from the pics, looks more like a weekend sport cards & collectibles show.

The ramen looks insulting too.  Couldn't they at least have given away ramen that the Japanese usually eat?

That Big Daddy statue is great though.  Did you and Drinky take pictures w/ it?  How tall is it?

I never understood why so many people recommended ninja scroll to me in the past, especially when I finally DID see it.

Starscream: Unforunately no :(

Which ninja scrolls did you watch?  I think there's more than one.  I watched Basilisk? and other than being too sad for my tastes, it was pretty good.

I was out shopping for a dining room table and a recliner all day for our new house, I'm not sure which was worse!

No, wait, I had to brave the masses at IKEA, that's a nightmare.

I dunno, the three hours at PAX were wearing on me pretty quick. I was appreciative of the hour I had to dink around with my DS at a cafe table lol.

Thanks! We close on September 19th, we're very excited about the house, it's in a really cool part of Seattle (Greenlake). Didn't eat there, but we did buy a bag of frozen meatballs, some gravy and some lingonberries for dinner tomorrow night.

We also went to Costco on a Saturday. ON A SATURDAY!! Sensible people don't do shit like that!!

How much did PAX cost to get into?

That's a lot for a show like this.  It's as much as going to a Six Flags or Universal Studios.  Any regrets?

Nope :(

I suspect most of the cool stuff that happened at PAX wasn't on the exhibition floor. I think it'll be another few years of E3 failures before companies start putting money into their presence there.

I figured Sony or Microsoft would've done something like a demo disc of something coming soon... I saw people all over downtown Seattle with huge ass Folklore bags yesterday.

That game is "huge ass".  At least judging from the demo.

Based off the Japanese and North American demos, I like it. To each their own, I guess.

No, most of the popular booths were literally packed shoulder to shoulder. I guess they demo'ed assassins creed right before I got there :p

Oh I will say Sega Rally Revo looked like a lot of fun.

That's weird that they'll be selling stuff at a gaming convention.  I don't remember anything being sold at the E3 convention.

I forgot to ask yesterday but did they have aracade machines for free play like E3?  I knew VF5 was going to bomb in the US because there were less than 10 people lining up for the VF5 machine at the last E3.

Not really, it was all consoles or pcs. VF5 on 360 looks identical on a technical level to the ps3 version, didnt get to see any of the extras cause I didnt stick around too long there.

They sell stuff at Tokyo Game Show (God, I feel like FoC turning the topic around to my personal experiences, but I've never been to PAX so I can only speak of my experiences at this particular game show).  SNK and Capcom always have a booth selling stuff.  That's where I got the Phoenix Wright orchestral soundtrack and a bunch of SNK keychains and mugs.
