Gran Turismo 5 is looking quite stunning
« on: August 26, 2007, 03:23:54 AM »
I know many of us here aren't big fans of sims like Forza or GT but GT is looking pretty impressive.  I'm extremely skeptical about the 200,000K polygons per car though.  200,000 x 16 cars x 60fps=192 million polygons/sec which is basically impossible for current gen hardware.  Most likely they use a 200,000 model when you're selecting the car and then use some form of LOD to keep the polygon counts down during game time.  The real time shot seems to reflect the decrease in detail during a race although it could be just due to a poorly taken shot.  Still, it'll be pretty cool to see such detailed car models in selection screens or when you're just driving one car around the track.

you can't calculate polys per frame that way -- LOD models drop the count seriously.

Yeah, that's why I'm saying it's not 200,000/car in game at 60FPS.  Which is what most GT fanboys are claiming.  I mean, no matter how hard the PS3 is to program for, it would have no problems running Madden at 60fps if it was capable of pumping out that many polygons/sec.

The first PS2 Madden made everyone go OMG.  That game sold a lot of PS2s by itself.  It was pretty much downhill from that point on, in terms of them making tremendous technical leaps.

Polyphony rocks ass hard. This game looks unbelievable, and a first glance at some of the shots honestly look like photographs, and it's the first time you can really say that and not be eating hype bullshit. It is immediately obvious they aren't photos when you look for more than a second, but Polyphony has come so damn close that it really blows my mind.

Didnt GT4 have some kinda of rally-ish mode? I honestly cant give two shits about street racing unless its ridiculously amped up like the Burnout series.

GT has always been better at making their games look more real.  Even GT3 had more realistic looking lighting at first glance than most next-gen racers.  But I'm not sure if it's really more realistic when you look closely.  Part of the reason why GT looks more real is everything is just shaded much darker than other games.   It's kinda like how lighting for a movie is adjusted from the original film before its theatrical release.  This looks all right in most areas but some things just don't look right when you're in direct sunlight because there shouldn't be as much shade as there are in GT.  Still, GT does do a better job at anyone else at tricking you into thinking it's real.

GT3 had a rally mode too.  Rallying in GT is not too bad actually.  The handling seems to be move forgiving in the rally races.

it doesn't look very good in gameplay though. especially the enviroenments.  I think the lighting is pre-baked.

Racing titles have kinda hit a ceiling lately, I mean the biggest differences to point out between titles is the lighting, and in most it looks pretty good. I always thought the lighting in Forza 2 looked kinda flat, which is the reason PGR3 looks 'better' to me.

it looks ugly as hell in gameplay because of the lack of AA plus the bitmaps plus the horrible textures and the horribly plain lighting.  considering the "physics" of this game I assume this is a thread about the game's replays.

but yeah, I guess the cars are curvy.

PGR3 had better HDR.

I think the perceptible difference (as far as visuals for the cars) from the 3rd person camera perspective has really hit its peak (as far as racing games go). Thats why PGR3/4 really put lots of work into the vistas (The cities and stuff where the real wow factor seems to be).

Now, I was really blown away when I saw the in cabin view for PGR3 and even more so for GTA5. From that perspective, you can really appreciate the work put into the various cars.

Yeah, the car models in Forza are about as detailed as PGR3 yet they don't look as good, mostly because of the lighting/shadowing.  I think Forza could also have benefited from a grain filter much like the GT games.  The main advantage of Forza was it was completely 60FPS without any slowdowns.  You can really feel the difference in speed at 60fps.

The grittiness of GT is why it looks more real though.  Forza and PGR are probably too clean looking for their own good which is why people complain that the cars in PGR/Forza look a little plastic.

Jesus MAF. read again.

anyway, kaz claims that the cars in gt5 have twice as many polygons as forza 2, but who knows. even if they were equally detailed (and they aren't, with interiors and the like modeled in gt5), there are 4 more cars per track in gt5, AND it's 1080p.

You're too good of a troll.  This statement alone would generate 3 pages of hate at GAF.

It's not just you.  Lots of people have made that mistake, especially since both are making games for the PS3 now.  That'll be interesting though if Polyphony got together with Rockstar to make a GTA.

I've only watched the replays of any GT game a few times with my own eyes but in-game, I don't really notice any filters.  Also the GTHD demo looked jaggy because of no AA.  once poly counts got up to PS2 level, you NEED AA.  I think the final game will have 2X AA but considering most people will not be playing it at 1080P, that's too low.

That's how I feel.

The cars are very well done while the environments leave quite a bit to be desired it seems.

yeah that's the main problem, I don't really see how this looks better than PGR or Forza cars in photomode but it's the environment that's most important.

Forza 2, looking just as good. :lol  Forza 2 is a good game, but its graphics really suck badly.

I'd say the environments look better in Forza 2 and in PGR3 at least this moment.  like the trees are pretty awful in GT5.  but omg the cars are on a totally different level than Forza 2.

the cars really don't look better to me IN GAMEPLAY.  that's probably because of the pre-baked lighting.  the bitmap trees are just fucked up though.
