Happy tenth birthday, you sexy black machine with the grey slot  :-*

I think the N64 was probably Nintendo's last hurrah in the console market.  Even though it was built upon a foundation of mistakes.  The big N tried to correct most of the problems of the N64 with the GameCube, but people had already been burned.

Anyway, the N64 represents the end of an era for me.  The last time I was really interested in console games.

Super Mario 64 (greatest game of all time)
GoldenEye 007 (revolutionary)
Diddy Kong Racing (far superior to MK64)
StarFox 64 (nice sequel with gorgeous graphics)
F-Zero X (60 fps racing goodness)
The Ocarina Of Time (Next Generation mag proclaimed it "Best game ever.")
Wave Race 64 (water effects blew me away - fantastic racing)
Beetle Adventure Racing (criminally overlooked racer - one of the best)
Perfect Dark (great atmosphere, if not quite a great followup to GE)
Excitebike 64 (my favorite motorcycle game ever? supplanted the original for me)
Command and Conquer 64 (true 3D w00t)

Ahhh .. the one console I bought three times.

Once to play OoT (then returned). Another for a weekend of Goldeneye (then returned) and then finally for keeps when Majora's Mask was released.

Then I went on a renting spree ... there were so many shit titles from third parties. Kind of depressing.

I loved the N64. Lots of new revolutionary things coming out for consoles on it. There were only a few good games on it, but the ones that were good were REALLY good. My notables:

Super Mario 64, I was in shock when I first saw this game in a dem oat Toys R us. Those were the days.

Goldeneye, I got this game cause I had a $10 coupon for it, I wasn't expecting such an awesome game - one of the greatest ever.

WCw/nWo Revenge - Probably my most played game EVER. I couldn't get enough multiplayer battles in this, thoroughly embarrased WWF Warzone, which I thought was hot shit at the time.

Legend of Zelda: OOT - my favorite game of all time, seeing this game for the first time - wow .. the graphics just put me in awe and the gameplay and story are awesome.

Later on more AKI wrestling games that were awesome, a solid Perfect Dark game (co-op was awesome to play, the first time I played it I played the co-op with someone all day), Majora's Mask, even Paper Mario. The great N64 era ... those were the days.

I loved my N64.  :heartbeat :heart

Super Mario 64
just blew my mind the minute I started the game. Just messing around with Mario face was fucking cool! The levels were so varied and FLYING - OH MAN!!! Last Mario game that was fuck awesome. Goldeneye basically introduced me to FPSs and was the coolest game I had played since C&C Red Alert. Played for hours and hours. When Perfect Dark came out, it took Goldeneye's place, since the multiplayer was basically the same due to it having much GE maps and it just had more options and weapons and BOTS, which even Halo didn't have. Stupid Halo. Zelda: OOT made me a Nintendo fanboy and started my path towards becoming a "hardcore gamer" I guess. I never have owned Mario Kart 64, but pretty much everyone else did, so I played that game just as much as any other, and then Diddy Kong Racing came along and had a much better single-player mode. But MK64 multiplayer still ruled supreme among my friends and I. Banjo-Kazooie was possibly even better than SM64. Conker's Bad Fur Day was such a great game. The single-player was actually decently hard and funny as hell and the multiplayer had some great modes, namely Beach. Starfox 64 was a damn solid game and the Independence Day level was amazing. F-Zero X was 60 FPS of racing greatness with a soundtrack that rocked my socks. The WCW/NWO games are definitely my most played wrestling games ever, just so much fun. And Paper Mario basically introduced me to RPGs.

Nintendo 64 rocked.

I don't like it anymore because it's in non-interlaced 320x240, it has sucky joysticks that disintegrate themselves in a matter of weeks, and I can't use any better output than s-video. Wonder if I'll ever try out the Blast Corps cart I bought months ago.

Mario 64 and Ocarina were awesome. And Rare was at the top of their game. It should have done better, dang it. :/

My favorite console and gaming era ever. Super Mario 64, Goldeneye 007, and Ocarina of Time is like my holy trinity of gaming. Popping each of those titles in for the first time was a revolutionary experience.

Now I pretty much dont game anymore, and when I do, I dont enjoy it as much. Ive played 1 game this year :(

Initially going through Goldeneye for the first time was the coolest fucking experience ever.  You could go anywhere, shoot anyone anywhere, they'd react differently depending on where you shot them!  You could snipe up on a hill, you could trigger huge alarms and guys would be coming at you from all directions.  You could be a spy, never being seen and popping everyone in the head.  Time trails, unlimited ammo/guns cheats, INCREDIBLE top of the line multiplayer.

Man that game fucking rocked!

Right on, Prost.  The first time playing GoldenEye was just incredible.  I'll never forget it (and I actually wish that I could forget it - so that I could play it all over again as a new experience).

Perfect Dark's multiplayer was better, but it really just built on top of the awesome base Goldeneye had already set.

The fucking snow level in Goldeneye, I forget the name....oh my god... the first time I played that and was sniping guys left and right was gaming bliss.

Helllllll yes.  That's my favorite level.  Level 4 - Surface.  The atmosphere, the music (I even converted the game rip to a wav file and play the CD in my car... that shit has some bass!).  The animation of the soldiers was so realistic!  I loved sniping in that level.  It really was gaming bliss.

First of all - no, just no with Perfect Dark. It had a worse framerate than Goldeneye, everything from the levels to the weapons were less inspired (FarSight and Laptop Gun exclusive), and the multiplayer was too overcooked. And James Bond makes for a much more exciting IP than Joanna Dark. And GE's music was much better. Goldeneye 10x  > PD.

Second, my favorite level, though cliche, remains Facility. Great challenge on 00 Agent. As for multiplayer, the way to go was 4 players, Licence To Kill, Pistols, Complex, first to 20 Kills. Me and some buddies played that setup for several hours a day for a solid 2 years. Great memories.

The single player of Goldeneye is most definitely better than PD's. But Solo, the amount of customization you had at your disposal in multiplayer PD was absolutely amazing. The new maps introduced in PD's multiplayer were pretty shitty, but it had most of the best Goldeneye maps. And I never really noticed the difference in framerate. Hell, the last time I tried to play Goldeneye 4-player it was fucking impossible to keep track of everything.

I see no difference if both games suffered from the same problems...

All I know is at the time, I had no troubles with framerate. Maybe if I was on GAF at the time, I would have been jaded enough to notice or care.
