I think you're gonna hate it, Will. Myself, loving TDR immensely, yet having major reverance for the original Halloween (it being my fav horror movie ever and all), feel like Im gonna come out very middle of the road, liking it, but not hating or loving it.

Either way, Im going Monday night.

I love Carpenter, I probably own more of his films than anyone other director.  Now, I'm not saying he's the best living director by any means (I will say he's one of the best genre filmmakers ever), but his films strike a real chord with me.

His take on horror with the original Halloween, although really just the maturation of the late Bob Clark's Black Christmas, turned the whole genre upside down (for better or worse).  The original is about pure evil, not some abused boy turned awry with cliche serial killer porn.  The whole point was that Michael Myers was evil, just because and that not every single person needs a bad childhood to turn psychotic.  Loomis would look into his eyes and see nothing.

The fact that you see his face as an adult, that he speaks an adult, that he speaks at all really and that a good portion of the movie is devoted towards justifying his rampage with a shitty childhood makes me want to fight it.  I'd like to give it a fair shake; there's taking liberties with a concept and then there's pissing all over its legacy, and from all indications, Zombie has pretty much done the latter.

Sure, it might be reasonably better than recent Halloween sequels, but it's not a sequel, nor is it a remake of Halloween: Resurrection - the bar is the original and if Zombie cannot meet it, he has failed.

As for The Devil's Rejects, I'm just not a fan because of its awful pacing.  Other, older movies have done that kind of film better.  I'm sure it's a thrill for anyone that hasn't seen a horror film made prior to the late 80s, but for anyone with any kind of investment in the genre, it's nothing more than another Zombie "homage" flick.  At this point, he has done nothing original whatsoever in his film career.

Um, I get asked that question alot. I don't really know, I do have a tendency to like Sci-Fi alot. But I really like al sorts of movies. I guess if you had to pin me with something it would be surreal type stuff in a sci-fi setting.

I like movies from every genre. Is good writing a genre?  :lol

If only there was a super dram. I could make my movie about a middle aged man with multiple personalities as a lesbian girl trapped in a cube while trying to solve the mystery of the stock market and meet sexy singles.

There looks to be an earlier cut of the film, from sometime mid-May, on joox now.  Just ten minutes in and it's pretty awful, even removing the sacred cow.  The dialogue and acting are pretty awful, and the cinematography thus far is amateurish.  I get what Zombie is doing - mimicking that late 70s/early 80s slasher feel with mediocre camera work, but it's still mediocre camera work.

Zombie's turning into the horror-movie-version of Tarantino, it seems. :/

I'm also praying two things from this cut:

That it was so early that sufficient time in post was not spent, because the lighting and editing is all janky.

There is a ton of temp track placement and the final cut does not represent the song selection for certain scenes, because it's laughable.  My gut says that a director of Zombie's field isn't big on temp song placement.

I almost want to see the final cut to see if it's better or worse.

As usual, I'm going against the mold on this forum and I can't wait to see the film. It looks good, especially after the Devil's Rejects turned out to be pretty good.

It won't top the original, but I'm sure it will still be pretty good.

I am pretty sure it will not be good, judging by this early cut.

By the way, he starts using the Myers mask when he is a kid and it looks huge on his tiny frame.  He's walking in it and stalking his prey, so it looks lol-worthy. :lol

OH MY GAWD.

This kid playing Myers is awful.  Like cringe-worthy.  I didn't really notice because all he did was mumble for the first 15 minutes and kill people.  Now with him talking to Loomis as in therapy is painful.  This "let's humanize Michael Myers" is ridiculous.

- 1 for cliche ward attendants rape powerless patient
- 2 for new Laurie Strode
- INFINITY POINTS for being boring

I shut this off.  It was incredibly boring.  I can imagine Zombie making a solid film if he'd cut this in like half, and recast the entire thing save for Loomis.

Are you watching the workprint? From what I understand, they've changed a lot from that version - there now is no dialogue period for adult Myers, no rape scene, etc.

Either way, all this is doing is getting me more hyped for Monday, to see if its a trainwreck or fuckawesome.

The writing and acting is so atrocious that I can't imagine a final cut being much better.  I hope it is, because this is way worse than I thought it'd be. I was thinking it'd be TCM-remake mediocre, not awful.

Wow, the CHUD review cites several scenes that made me laugh or cringe, so they did make it into the final cut.  I pretty much agree wholeheartedly with the CHUD review, except I thought McDowell's scenery chewing was fun.  I also agree that the best scene in the movie is Michael's first kill, because it feels brutal and relentless.  Maybe if the film opened with that, it'd be a better film.

At any rate, this movie proves Zombie is a horrible writer.

Quote from: CHUD
Ken Foree, Sid Haig, Dee Wallace Stone and Halloween 4 and 5 star Danielle Harris, among others, just complete the illusion of this having been shot behind the San Diego Convention Center during a lunch break.

I just watched the workprint, which was seriously one of the worst films I've seen in the past two years, and from all accounts, the workprint is supposedly better than the final cut.

I am not giving Zombie my money on this project.  If the workprint turned out to even be mediocre, I might've shelled out some cash to see the final product, but it was awful.

The two most negative reviews, CHUD and Moriarty, both said the workprint was superior.  I've read a few other reviews from people that saw both that said they preferred the fleshed out workprint, which offered some credibility for Michael's actons, a better escape and a better climax.

Willco has shit taste in movies; so it's probably good. Lots of people are saying the workprint is better than the final flick too. Things are more fleshed out. The Halloween flicks aged horribly anyway.

I liked it. It wasn't the original of course, and it wasn't perfect, but it was much better than any post original Halloween film. By far.

It needed more Michael sequences in Smiths Grove, and there's a death sequence that seems to be repeated several times, but it was pretty good. I give it about a 6.5 or a 7.
