Question about wireless routers.
« on: October 01, 2006, 05:28:45 PM »
Does it matter what kind of router you have, meaning the more expensive the better the router?  Or does it make a difference as long as it works an it's up to your provider for the speed.

I'm just confused on the whole router thing =\

Ok when your talking about wireless routers you've got many things to consider. Your input speed from your provider will stay constant. What will not is the conditions in which the wireless signal will be bounced around in your home. It depends on signal strength. As long as you got 100% there should be  no difference than if you were on your cabled modem.

Routers also talk with other computers and devices on the same network, that speed is shared on the same pipeline as the internet that you have but can be received at a much faster rate cause its not dependent on the speed from your provider. But as i said it does share the same pipe.

There are many different types of wireless routers to choose from depending on what you need. Some routers dont work with certain devices. So its best to find what you plan on using it for and then go from there.

thanks zombz, so it really doesn't matter if your connection is bad in the first place the router won't matter.

My mom got a deal with Verzion where they gave her a router for like 14 bucks and the highest it gets is 52.0 mhps and I thought to myself maybe it's the router that makes that shit go slow....because at school I know our routers are fast as hell.

54 megabytes per second is the max that router can move. However its highly unlikely you internet is that fast, unless you are paying far up the ass for it. DSL I don't think even goes that fast, and cable that fast would be sooooo expensive. No it does not relate to the speed your internet is, merely the max data you can move through your connected computers.

we pay 30 something a month I think (?) but yeah I know it's like 50 something than dips to 48 and even 32 sometimes, but the highest i've seen it on is 50 while fucking with it...yet it's still slow, whatever.
