Im buying a bike in two weeks. Suggestions?
« on: September 01, 2007, 04:33:26 AM »
Im thinking a sort of mountain bike-ish thing cause I can ride that and wear normal clothes. Normal riding bikes seem to require I fucking wear all the gear. Then again Im required to wear the doofy ass helmet so GOD DAMNIT is it possible to win? Are there non-doofy helmets out there?

That's my bike, a Giant Warp DS1... a great dual-suspension MTB, although dual-suspension isn't really needed if you are just travelling on roads and basic hills - rear suspension adds weight. My bike was about $800 after tax, you could probably get it for a bit cheaper.

One of the things I loved about Seattle was that it just seemed like the perfect mountainbiking environment, so many hills around.

Rules while riding a bike:

1. Look both ways.
2. Always wear a distinguished mentally-challenged helmet. It keeps the focus away from your ugly bikeriding face.

If you're not trail riding I'd stay away from full suspension bikes.  Actually, even then I prefer a hard tail.

how good is your city for bikers?  do they have those buttons in the center of crosswalks for bikers to trigger left turns and do they have bike lanes?

they're like pedestrian crosswalk buttons that are in the middle of the crosswalks and they put them on major streets (ones with a curb in the center).  this way, the bicyclist doesn't have to wait for a car that wants to turn left to come up behind him to set off the pressure pad under the street (which is why this is only needed on major streets).  in this area, I've only seen it once and that was at the intersection of two major streets because then you don't get a lot of unnecessary red lights.

they basically look like a 3 foot pole with a crosswalk button on it.
