Best movies of the year - place yer bets!
« on: September 02, 2007, 08:53:38 PM »
Well, not really...not gambling, per se...but...which movies (that have yet to be released) do you guys think will end up making your "best of" lists at the end of the year?  I'm thinking the following:

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford: Sounds like a throwback to '70s cinema -  Days of Heaven, Badlands, The Ballad of Cable Hogue, etc.  The criticism seems to be divided between "it's brilliant" or "it's totally pretentious."  I want to see it for myself to see what's what.

There Will Be Blood: As long as P.T. Anderson is reigned in by his producers and editors.  All his movies seem to run long.

No Country For Old Men: I'm betting this is going to be the best movie of the year, even though certain people here seem to think the Coen Bros. don't have what it takes anymore.

The King of Kong: This sounds like a frickin' hilarious documentary.  Maybe the first documentary relating to video games that can be enjoyed by anyone?  Really looking forward to this.

Eastern Promises: I hated History of Violence, but it's Cronenberg and he does great work more often than not.

American Gangster: Ridley Scott, Russell Crowe, and Denzel Washington in a gritty crime drama.  I can't see this movie going wrong.

What Just Happened?: Starring Robert DeNiro, a roman a clef about the making of The Edge, a David Mamet-scripted thriller, which apparently had a somewhat troubled production.  Directed by the great Barry Levinson...but looks like it won't come out till 2008.

I want to see most of these movies. In fact, I didn't know DeNiro had movie coming out; Levinson directed Sleepers, a great movie that DeNiro also stars in.

I don't know which will be the best, but I must say I'm most interested in American Gangster; it features like 2-3 rappers, but I doubt they can ruin this.

Eastern Promises looks very interesting, as does No Country for Old Men.

KNOCKED UP (so far)

Fall wise I am giddy for The Darjeeling Limited, could be the best film of the year for me.

Darjeeling Limited looks great - I'm sure I'll enjoy it, like I have all of Anderson's films (except Rushmore...I dunno why, but I just couldn't get into that one).  Life Aquatic was fun but a bit underwhelming so I've got my fingers crossed hoping it's better than that one.

I forgot to mention Lions for Lambs - I'm kind of divided on it, in that it has a good pedigree but it stars the Cruise missile, whose career I would love to see flushed down the toilet.

I am into Lions for Lambs, oddly my enjoyment of Cruise has gone up a lot due to his hate, I feel like he needs some love. But I am mainly into it because OMG POLITICS and Redford.

Well, I figure it can't be as bad as The Legend of Bagger Vance, right? Right?  :-\

EDIT: Speaking of Cruise, I am willing to bet that Valkyrie (his new WWII Hitler assassination film that's filming now) is going to be mediocre at best.

I forgot about that one. 3:10 to Yuma looks AWESOME.  This year has a lotta Westerns coming out (I guess you could count There Will Be Blood as a Western too).

I'm also interested in seeing Finishing The Game

Quote
Bruce Lee's death in 1973 was a tragic loss for his family and fans; for the producers of his final film, it was a costly inconvenience -- an inconvenience whose cost was mitigated through the use of a body double and cobbled-together old footage to create 1978's Game of Death. Finishing the Game, directed by Justin Lin (of The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift), satirizes the making of Game of Death. Confusing? Tasteless? Hilarious? All three? We'll soon find out!

Eh, I think Singer can pull it off. The Usual Suspects is one of my top 10 films of the 90's.

That's due to the script and Kevin Spacey more than anything (and, btw, top ten lists are ridiculous).  Singer's a very lazy director.  I just can't see him doing anything interesting anymore.  Superman Returns proved it, as far as I'm concerned.  Singer's not as bad as, say, cinematic fauxteur Brett Ratner, but he's not particularly good either.

Apparently his coke habit caused a lot of problems on the set of X2, but I didn't hear about any issues regarding this on Superman Returns so hopefully he has that under control again.

No mention of I'm Not There?

It's a Bob Dylan biopic that isn't really a biopic, with Bale, Blanchett, Ledger, and some black kid playing him.  It shall be incredible.

:hehe

I'm interested to see how the "biopic" turns out, given the twist on how Dylan is portrayed during different stages of his life, but I generally don't go for biopics and remain skeptical.  That's the official stance of the guy with the Bob Dylan avatar.

I don't know why it's so funny that someone doesn't like Bob Dylan.  It's all about personal tastes.

"There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief,
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.
Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth,
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."

"No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke,
"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate,
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late."

All along the watchtower, princes kept the view
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.

Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl,
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

The King Of Kong.  I see that Billy Mitchell has recently started responding to the movie, saying he was presented in a negative light.  Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.  ::)

Superbad was enjoyable, but not "SUPER HAPPY OMFG AWESOME" like it's been hyped up to be.  I felt the same way about 40 year old virgin, which I heard was full of laughs...it wasn't.  I liked that movie, mind you, it's just it wasn't the laugh-out-loud comedy people were making it out to be....kind of started that way then sort of changed genres.  Wedding Crashers was the same way.
