WoW Thread - Working on a good fire spec for battlegrounds 30-39
« on: September 03, 2007, 12:46:48 AM »
Toying around with a mage in battlegrounds, decided not to go ice cause thats a lot of work, so I went fire spec instead. In terms of stats I went for a mix of survivability and mana. I did the same thing with my level 60 lock back in the day. A good bit of stam can go a long way with the hit and run afflict locks and scorch spec fire mages. Sure if youre some RAID mage you can sit and fire nukes, but when yer in BG you have to be prepared to get your hands dirty!

Here's my current 39 spec. (Im 38 but im just adding another point to Fire Power)

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/mage/talents.html?0000000000000000000000005223201230203122000000000000000000000000000

Impact - SO useful to add stun chance when tossing out the fast fire spells (scorch/fireblast). Also useful when using Flamestrike/BlastWave

Flame Throwing - Added distance is essential.

Improved Fire Blast - By 39 your fireblasts will crit for close to 500 if you do it right, and having a quick cool down on an instant cast that powerful is important.

Ignite - Still not sure I want this one, the dot is nice and keeps rogues from doing their vanishing shit tho.

Burning Soul - Avoid those embarassing spell interrupts.

Incinerate - +4% chance to crit scorch or fireblast. My natural crit chance for fire spells at 38 is 14.7+%, add another 4% and OMG, 1.5 sec cast scorches can crit for upwards of 250, and may stun thanks to impact wooo. Plus fireblast crits = ftw.

Pyroblast - USELESS for PVP, but a stepping stone to something important, BLAST WAVE

Master of Elements - Scorch is a cheap spell, but Fireblast and BlastWave are not. Keep yourself going with some mana refunds! Not sure ill max this one out yet.

Blast Wave - Crowd control for those too close for comfort moments. This thing hits anyone in range, potential to daze and its crits are close to fireblast level. This spell also flows well into the use of other spells for some extreme damage.

Critical Mass - This is what gets my natural fire spell crit chance to almost 15%.

Blazing Speed - 10% chance to enter +50% speed for 8 seconds and escape immobilizing effects on ranged or melee strike? Essential for flag runners or mages who love to be in the thick of it. Ultra annoying talent for people trying to finish you off.

Firepower - The name says it all. IM DEMAN MOAR!

Improved Scorch - Added fire weakness, stacks up to 5 times.

Eep.  Mage is the one class I have zilch experience with. I would think improved Fireball would be useful. less casting time equals more fireballs. I am not sure where you would take points from, maybe some of the fire blast skills or ignite. How useful is fire blast?

Improved Fireball is fantastic for grinding, bad for battlegrounds. Pyroblast can also great for grinding, bad for battlegrounds. Honestly tho Pyroblast compared to say a level 7 fireball are essentially the same save for the higher damage dot that follows, and thats not much.

I would go like this but take 2 points out of imp Fireblast and put them in Burning Soul. At that level, a lot of it is personal preference, but really imp Fireball is a lot nicer than you'd imagine in pvp.

I still didn't quit this fucking game btw :(

burning soul only goes to 2, fireblast cooldown reduction is VERY important in PVP. I mean I already have an almost 5% improved crit chance with scorch and fireblast spells, id rather go for that then a fireball which is far more obvious and easy to counter with silence or fear or whatever. I actually give frost mages a lot of hell cause its so easy to see frostbolt being whipped out. Course that frost mage last night wasnt that good.

I was using improved fireball initially cause I was grinding a lot, but I found in battlegrounds I never really got a lot of damage in or found the opportunities to launch powerful fireballs. I opted instead for 1.5 second cast scorches mixed in with fireblasts. This gave me a lot more flexibility and my kill count has doubled since. I've also found blazing speed incredibly useful in WSG for flag runs and then just the general 'get the fuk outta dodge' situations.

If I were to axe any of them it might be improved scorch, but then my option to climb the tree would involve improved fire ward which I use almost never and master of elements, which isnt bad. I COULD but the 3 into improved fireball but it wouldnt get me to max cast time reduction on that either which makes it kinda meh.

Bursty damage is always good in PvP, regardless of the game or class. I played some WSG with a fire mage and had a fun time back when I played the game.

Fireball is too tricky to reliably use in mobile PvP like WSG, IMO.

I think fireball is ok if you have a good team backing you, but in the new world of PUG PVP its all about mobility. I think ill bust into the ice tree near the end for the improved ice nova and ice shield talents.

Ryan says:
does he attack? no, he drops the flag in front of me and runs off

Doug says:

Ryan says:

Oh man, I just had one of the best WSG of my WoW life. This build is awesome. I was capping flags alone against like 4-5 defenders. Blazing speed and mana shield = the king haha. Capped the flag all 3 times and got the flag back 3 times.

I just picked up my second piece of Tier 5 tonight downing Void, and I technically didn't even need T5 shoulders. Suppose it's an upgrade though. I hate to say it, but raiding is satisfying even if it does take up a ludicrous amount of your time. Tonight wasn't bad though.

I've had major connection issues so I haven't played lately, and I'm sure my guild is crazy angry about it because they haven't been able to do stuff without their main healers around anymore.

I'd like to finish off my lock and use it in PVP.  I currently do use Shadowbolt, even if it is a longer cast, but immolate, Shadowbolt, conflag, burn kills nice and fast.  Searing Pain gets too little bonus damage to spam instead of Shadowbolt.   Which is why I thought imp fireball might be good, but at your level +damage isn't as much.  I just know that certain spells get more of the +damage than others.

I mean if you have TIME to cast the bigger spells thats awesome, but my battlegrounds are full of PRICKS that get in my face. That's ok tho, im geared to be a big ol pain in the ass.
