Eh, I'm terrible at starting conversation. Unless I know what the person is in to, I don't say much. I should start drinking before I meet new people because whenever I'm even the slightest bit drunk I find it very difficult to shut the fuck up.

In any case, open-ended questions work best because they can't make a simple response to those.

fact regurgitation is fine if it's pulling a response and you can play off it, but obviously common interests or situations (work, school, entertainment media, the person you were mutually blowing when you met) are more ideal banter for a person less interested -- anything that doesn't warrant a single word response.
