Trading in MP3 for that new MOH game
« on: September 05, 2007, 08:31:41 PM »
I just can't take it anymore.  I just go to Byrdo, go a some sort of room with a big chasm and just said fuck it. The first hour of the game was simply too excruciating for me. I've never felt like that about a videogame, ever. MP3, to me; feels like work. Everything about the game is incredibly linear and staged. Run into a dead-end? Oh look, a convenient ball-shape hole a wall that will lead you to a switch that will open up that door you were stuck at previously. It's always  the same thing, over and over again. The ennemies are beyond lame; I nearly gave up at the part where you are into a glass tunnel and that giant flying thing from Metroid 3 snes attacks you and you have to blow him up by getting caught in his mouth and then releasing a bomb.

What is this. And then you eventuallly fight him again in a endless fall where you have to shoot at his flashing body parts until you kill him and a freaking cyborg version of IceMan from x-men comes to save you. Then after running around the place, you and your shitty friend gets owned by a powerblast by some sort of evil version of yourself.

After reaching Byrdo after that; i just said fuck it. It's not worth my time, I don't care what happens, and the gameplay is boring me to tears. I loved metroid 2 on the GB and metroid 3 snes, but after 3 tries, I just can't wrap my head around the 3d ones, and especially MP3. It feels like some sort of weird 1998 fps game. The synth music is beyond awful.

tomorrow i'm going to trade in MP3 for that MOH game, and even if I suspect that it will be an average experience, I will get more enjoyement with it than with MP3.

I'm playing Airborne right now. Pretty cool. I'm playing on Expert difficulty, hopefully it gives me the achievements for Casual and Normal too. I will be pissed. Knowing EA, I will be pissed.

I nearly gave up at how lame it was and how 'videogamey' it felt. It's the kind of shit that just takes me out of a game so much. It just kills the immersion

I finally got my copy from slow-ass Estarland.  I swear, I need to find someplace closer to here.

Probably won't play this game for very long, and there's basically 0 chance of actually forcing myself to finish it, but it was fun to try.  I'll fool around with it over the weekend and then probably toss it on Ebay.

that pretty well describes how i feel about the first two prime games.

...and bioshock to a degree, though it's obviously wrong to compare rapture to prime's artless and relentlessly 'videogamey' environments. exploration-based games in which it's your responsibility to root through every little pile of debris in every little corner are just boring in 3d.

I think you're just making stuff up when you say something's "relentlessly videogamey" but it's 3 A.M. and I really don't have the energy to figure out why you find searching through trash cans more interesting.

Why the fuck would I make shit up about owning, playing a videogame and  not liking a 50$ videogames on the internet  you sweatpants wearing fruitcakes? Grow up, distinguished mentally-challenged fellows. My gaming time is precious and MP3 doesnt fit into what I'd call 'well invested gaming time'. I have other shit to play that I know I'll like. Fuck off and go spill that kind of shit on another forum.

digging through trashcans for magical syringes might be the single worst thing about bioshock, but rapture is nonetheless an internally consistent and reasonably naturalistic environment -- which represents an aesthetic advance over prime's naked 'videogameyness.' obligatory lava areas next to obligatory ice areas, environments that could only have been built to provide a videogame heroine with a series of contrived challenges, scanlogs full of pretendypoo jargon -- these things are offensive in the same way that crude plot twists and undisguised narrative devices are offensive in books. that the metroid prime games are considered 'artistic' and 'intelligent' tells you everything you need to know about the state of videogames and videogame 'criticism.'

regardless of what you think, it's not the story that drives a game.  it can't be, because you're controlling it.  MP games work because they just try to offer pure entertainment.  I don't think you'll find a nintendo fan that disagrees with that.

i'm willing to overlook all kinds of bullshit in games that are actually fun -- i don't ask ninja gaiden to stop being stupid  -- but i really don't see the fun in metroid prime. it's one of those games where the world design provides all the interest -- where you're supposed to get lost in the 'atmosphere.' i find most of those games boring, but when they don't even get the world design right...

what are you talking about?  I personally liked the combat system and especially the boss battles.  some enemies are just wildlife that are really easy to kill but the combat system really shines against bosses and space pirates.  it's easy to get used to but still challenging.  why would you really think you just get lost in the game's atmosphere?  It's a shooter, with RPG elements.  think of it like that.

i don't think you'll find a nintendo fan capable of rational, expansive discussion about videogames in general, although they'll be glad to tell you the history of kirby or some third-string ead producer, often with accompanying diagrams

I don't mean nintendo fan as in somebody who thinks the company is the best.  I just mean somebody who likes any of the games.
