cyberball was kind of fun.  I found out you could easily beat the fatal fury demo by pressing back and down and just kicking.

All these old fighting games are rubbish, just bump it up to Capcom vs SNK 2, or MvC 2. I'll even bite with Children of the Atom.

SHUT DE FUCK UP Fatal Fury indeed wasn't anywhere as good as Street Fighter II, but FF2 wasn't bad and FFS was pretty good.  IMO Fatal Fury came into its own with Real Bout in 1995.  Early KOF games from that time didn't do anything different with the Fatal Fury characters, that's bullshit.

Anyway, I think this is a game that's aged pretty badly.  Most early SNK fighters (SS aside, although that too has the same feel) are pretty stiff and not as responsive as they should be.  They really should have put up one of the Real Bout games.

I never liked KoF and was disappointed when the series went that way.  All the characters in KoF looked the same and sometimes even felt too much the same. No distinctiveness at all.

Just played some games online.  Not bad; zero lag, which was surprising.  I beat the shit out of the guy that played me, got bored, and stopped.  I forgot what a pain in the ass it was to get to Ryo in single player.  The CPU AI is all over the place...I can get a perfect one round, then never touch the CPU the next.

This seems to be a good port/emulation of the game, but it is a straight arcade port.  No other options available; just arcade play.  Minus points for lack of a screen adjust.

Fatal Fury is crap

Your opinion is crap OH SNAP

He didn't get that line until Garou MOTW in 2000.

No, he's also from Garou.  Geese Howard is in FFS.

Technically it wasn't even that.

But he said "first fighting game other than SF that was any good."  Makes sense to me.  I mean, he's totally wrong, but it makes sense.   ;)

What was the first weapons-based fighter, then?
Everything else you said, I agree with. It's common knowledge that Mortal Kombat wasn't any good until the second game.  :-*

I've been getting perfect victories against people and all but one match had zero lag.  SNK did a good job with the net code.  It's fun owning people who pick Geese or Krauser and are surprised how easily they go down.   :lol

What was the first weapons-based fighter, then?

I can't remember the names, but there were several, very basic pre-SF2 fighting games that had weapons.  I didn't even know they existed until I played on MAME a couple of years ago.

From what I recall, the Real Bout FF games were pretty good, as was MOTW (of course).  Love Samurai Showdown 2 though, and (while we're on the subject) the tone/atmosphere in the Last Blade games really resonated with me.

The Real Bout games were great.  I loved the Last Blade games (shame that the PS2 ports of the games are slightly flawed!).  Strangely enough, though, some of my favorite SNK stuff were their Neo Geo Pocket Color games.  Gal Fighters, SNK Vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium, and SNK Vs. Capcom: Card Fighter's Clash, were all really fun games.  It'd be fun if somehow those games were released via emulation.  More people need to play 'em.

even the supposed "best" of them, doa4 (in terms of online experience), wasn't playable.

DoA4 was ok most of the time, but god damn were there some issues sometimes. DoA4 is thankfully a very shallow and loose fighter so lag doesnt ruin an experience. Anything else tho is just settling, unless of course you live in a different country and refuse to acknowledge that fiber optic infrastructures are not everywhere.

Aw, come on...I remember playing you and MAF and not hearing complaints.

You know, we've been down this road before:

1. I have ADSL here, not fiber optic.

2. I played plenty of fighters online back in Atlanta.  The only game I ever found unplayable was Guilty Gear XX #Reload on Xbox.

3. It IS your connection that's to blame.  Results vary.  Location varies, etc.

I've been playing FFS lately.  Most of the time I get lag free matches, but occasionally I do get some (bad) lag.  I played a guy in France and it was impossible to really do anything, but people in the U.S. and Japan have been fine.  Very smooth for the most part.  It's not perfect, but these games are more than playable online.

Hell even Bleach DS 2nd on DS surprised me.
