Recommend me some classic books in sci fi/horror/adventure genres
« on: September 06, 2007, 12:42:55 AM »
Since I apparently don't have internet or T.V. any more, I decided to catch up on some fine book reading so as not to go crazy. I know some of you read a lot, so please help me choose some good ones.

Also, stuff on philosophy is good too.

don't read Ender's Game
pretty much any book that's not Ender's Game is fine.

Nothing specific, really. Just something that makes you think...or something.

What's so bad about it? Also, was thinking about something from H.P. Lovecraft. Good or no?

I though it was okay in 5th grade...

Some of my favorites:

Neuromancer/Mona Lisa Overdrive/Count Zero
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep
Stranger In a Strange Land
Snowcrash
The Stainless Steel Rat books (okay these are pulp but they're so much fun)

Bertrand Russell's history of westren philosophy makes a good intro other wise buy the basic writings of Nietzsche; start with beyond good and evil, also read mill's utilitarianism.  Those were good starting books for me.

listen to malek though.

funny, Lovecraft invents a new genre of horror and the only sentence FoC remembers is the incredibly racist one

wait, that's not funny, that's sadly predictable

No It's not the only one I remembered. I just copyied it because Ithought it was a funny testament to the time it was written.

FoC, if slavery were still legal, how many slaves would you own? Since we all know that slavery is a benevolent institution based on mutual respect, you can tell us. It's cool. We're all friends here.

If i lived in the early 1800 in the south I'd have slaves.  Though I'd be an employer of equal opportunity and have slaves of all colours.

Starship Troopers!

Heinlein is awesome if you ignore his weird political leanings. I liked The Cat Who Walks Through Walls a lot too. I can't even remember all the Heinlein books I've read.

Just don't watch Starship Troopers the movie or watch it before the book that way you don't have to identify them as being related.
