I've said before that Blue Dragon was just like a Dragon Quest with much better graphics which is why the complaints about it being "boring" and the lukewarm reviews didn't make any sense.  Unless DQ8 changed significantly after the 1st 8hrs (at which point I gave up), its gameplay wasn't any better than BD's.  From what I saw in BD's demo, its story also seemed more interesting than DQ's.

As simple as the story was in DQ8, it's still better than the one in Blue Dragon but there are moments in BD that feel much more epic than DQ (like the end of disc 1).  Plus the characters in DQ8 are much better realized than the ones in BD.  DQ8 had Yangus while Blue Dragon has Marumaro, a poor man's distinguished mentally-challenged cousin of Jar-Jar Binks. And imo, the dungeons in DQ8 had more variety and were better designed than Blue Dragon.

I don't think Blue Dragon is as good as DQ8 but it certainly doesn't deserve all these low scores and harsh reviews either.  It's a little simple and too easy but the game is amazingly addictive and a lot of fun.

DQ8's final castle dungeon was really amazing, the big problem with DQ8's dungeons weren't their size (although they are definitely tiny compared to the rest of the DQ games) but the fact you get a map almost immediately after entering. So far, BD rocks, even though the challenge level leaves a bit to be desired, I still prefer DQ8 due to this.

So you prefer DQ8 because it gives you a map even though you think it's a problem?  Or because BD's too easy?

DQ8 ended up boring the piss out of me.  I got to the cool mole boss and I just put it down.

I can totally see why people liked it, but I just ended up getting bored because of the dungeons, yeah.

Blue Dragon does seem to be better, haven't played a lot of it yet though.  Just a bit at my friend's house.

DQ8 received high scores because its an old-school franchise that started in the 80s.  Reviewers were probably like "this is part of the seriesto that MAGICAL game that I played when I was a kid, oh the memories" and went overboard with their scores.  Not to mention some hyperboles in their reviews.

dq8 did have good dungeons.  it was more monster difficulty than puzzling dungeons.  like the opposite of link.

You should give them a try, Brandnew.  Ultima 4 and 5 are supposedly really good but their graphics are pretty hard to tolerate by today's standards.  All the games after that still look decent enough to play.  I don't know how hard it would be though to get them to run in XP. 

I saw somewhere a project to port Ultima 7 to the PSP.  I would mod my PSP if that ever happens.  Ultima 7 and the expansions would have more awesome RPG gaming than all the PSP rpgs combined.

Are you running it in XP?  How hard is it to get it to work?  I just remember that those old games have a lot of distinguished mentally-challenged memory issues that weren't fixed just by having more ram.  I hated making and testing boot discs for hours just to get a game to work.

My game clock in DQ7 read 144 hours by the time I finished it and I didn't even catch all the monsters for the zoo you could set up. That game rocked.

i have to admit that my experience with the DQ gameplay system(s) is probably more limited than many people on this forum (the only ones i played at length are 3, 5, 7, 8) but BD feels a lot more like FF5 / other SNES FF than it feels like DQ to me. the way the world and dungeons are structured, the game pacing, etc.

certainly the job system is more like FF5 than it is like DQ7's.

i think its reviews are pretty poor. i was particularly unimpressed with a. fitch saying in the WA5 review that the game is clearly superior to BD. WA5 is thus far an idiotic piece of shit.

i gave DQ8 4 stars / 5 and i gave BD 8/10 (8.5 in OXM for the import.) i hated DQ7. you can't accuse me of anything!
