I'm about to start FFXI what should I know?

If you like MMOs then FF11 is one of the more hardcore ones.

WoW is for people who don't like or know much about MMOs, but want to play one, so it's a fantastic newbie MMO.

FF11 is for grinding hours on end, on end, on end, on end.  And then you're like level 20 and you've completed maybe .1% of all the leveling.

You just have to put a TON of time into FF11.  WoW you can play casually and still accomplish things.  And you can do battle arenas which i hear are a blast and very unique.

WoW is an MMORPG for people new and veterans of mmorpgs. I played a lot of DAoC, Asherons Call, and text based muds. There is plenty for everyone.

I found FFXI to be addicting, but not "fun."  In fact, pretty much everything about it except chatting to folks in my linkshell was the opposite of "fun" in every way.

 FFXI caused my comp to reboot!! I started it up after changing the resolution when all of the sudden the screen turned blue with some text and my comp restarted, this just happened and it's never happened before, any issues with FFXI doing this?

the issue is that you're trying to play FFXI. don't. DON'T.

to clarify: FFXI is a PC game from a Japanese console company. The software is buggy, awkward, and counterintutitive. It breaks rules Microsoft never even thought to write down. If the least it's doing is rebooting your system, count your blessings. Don't even think about alt-tabbing out; that has a 1/5 chance of overwriting your boot sector.

if you really want to play I suggest you get it for a console - I suggest the x360 edition as it seems to run the best and has all expansions in one pak.

It sucks. The economy is terrible, the quest system is laughable, no one quests except for epic gear. The whole game play experience is standing in a circle and killing enemies one at a time for shitty amounts of experience.

Still, it's their first MMO and they're Jappa, which means they don't have computers, sociable people, or the internet. So it's a good start.

FFXIV or whatever will probably be great. FFXI's art style is really nice. GT's retrospective about FFXI was way too kind.

Ravidrath or whatever his gaf username is, dude is behind those GT retrospective vids he is a big FFXI nut so it doesn't surprise me he decided to dedicate a whole episode just to the game and yeah he was WAY too nice with it.

FFXI is very time consuming and very unforgiving at times (iirc you lose exp everytime you die), what I really liked about it is the way the game implements the storyline into a MMORPG, also loved Vana Diel best FF world easily, but then the gameplay is so fucking archaic by today standards that it just best to not bother.
