Tales of Phantasia is AWESOME
« on: September 08, 2007, 04:32:21 PM »
So, my 360 is boxed up and waiting to head out and I'm unemployed (FUCK YOU CATERING MAN), so I decided to cruise through Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean in between sending out resumes and biking 14 miles round trip to find out that the job you told me was available is- LOL - not.

ToP is fucking awesome. It's got cool little characters and fun action packed-ness and all kinds of easy going blues. But my fiancee is writing a paper on my laptop and so for the last 48 hours instead og having an awesome time with ToP I've been READING BOOKS and falling off my bike and scraping my knee :( Are there fun ToP-esque games for PSP or DS? I'm in her office and I brough SNES9x and the roms and save states with me, but on a Mac formatted iPod and fucking Windows won't get with the times and recognize it.

God damn it! Star Ocean didn't seem quite as fun and I got killed by the first boss :(

Tales of Phantasia is on GBA -- but its extreeeeemely slow in battles and the voice acting is lol-worthy

Tales of Eternia (Tales of Destiny II PSX) is on PSP, but only in Europe. You might be able to find one at an import place, or a Fry's (?). If you hacked your PSP, you can just download it.

Also, if you have a hacked PSP, you can run Tales of Destiny on it, since you can play PSX games.

Everything else is on Gamecube or PS2.

Two other "ToP-esque" games are the two Summon Night games on GBA. Not as good as ToP, but the battles play out the same.

I'm poor as hell, but that 169$ price tag on the PSP is delicious.

The slims aren't hackable right now, if you plan on getting one. They probably will in the near future, though.

I should be able to get a Phat for a little cheaper now, non? Is the slim that much more lovable?

It's all preference, really. I haven't tried the slim to decide, but I dont have any issues with the current models. Mostly because I got it for free, woot.

I'm sure the new slim will be like the DS Lite, making it worth a buy. But if it's not hackable, there's no reason to get it.

There's also Tales of the World on PSP, that doesnt play like Phantasia, but you'll probably like it.

ToP on SNES is a great game, though the encounter rate WILL grate on you, the whole game is about 50+ hours long. If you have a modded PS1, the remake is even better, and a good friend of mine is working on a professional-quality translation of it, which should hopefully be available next year. Star Ocean is also really great, albeit with a lot of backtracking, it's definitely worth giving more of a chance to. Oh if you mean the first battle against the pirate boss, Bayard, use a Flare Bottle (you will get them from defeating the other pirate enemies) on him, to make pretty quick work of him.

The encounter rate is more grating in some places than others and I'm certain that Dashing increases it. The unofficial english translation is a little odd in places ("I BET SHE FUCKS LIKE A TIGER") and the plot is hackeneyed, but I like the sense of progress. Plenty of new skills, not so tricky to gain a few levels when you need it. Controls can be a little wonky in places when you really need them to fit into place and the party AI can be fucking downright distinguished mentally-challenged at times, but it generally purrs comfortably, especially now that I have a couple more spells and skills to hang out.

I'm just about to enter the mines  of Moria. How far am I?

I'd say a good 30%-40% through with the game, it is VERY long for a game of that era, took me about 55 or so hours to beat. The Mines of Moria is a very long dungeon too.

Oh, the whole "turning Arche into a big slut" was added by DeJap, and not in the original Japanese version of course, the translators went a bit too far overboard with the humor. Gamefan described the plot the best, in a preview of the game... "Time travel? Mana disappearing from the world? Your party being the descendents of 4 brave warriors who originally sealed the bad guy away? It's like playing every Square game ever, at the same time!"

I loved ToP.  I beat it at the start of the year, the GBA version.

Really? I've only been playing for like 6 hours. I think I'm missing a lot of side quest shit. I'm stuck on floor 5 of Moira, there's a bullseye I need to hit :(

Arche is a bit saucy in the GBA version but it's all pretty innocent. At one point they imply she's... *gasp* ...not a virgin.

Yeah, the DeJap version is very upfront. She offers to fuck the captain, then says she's 17 and then the magic fuck Klefar or whatever says that she must fuck like a tiger. Rawr.

Anyway, I entered Undine's cave. Is a pain, but whatever.

Well, when I played the game, I was also working on a FAQ at the same time (one of the first English-language FAQs available for the game, you can still find a copy at GameFAQs, lol, although it hasn't been updated since like 2000 and still has my college email), not to mention I played completely in Japanese, so that was probably the reason it took me so long. But yeah, if you didn't get Undine, Gnome, and Ifrit, do that before going to the Mines... there is an item that you get in I believe Ifrit's cave that will help you with the bullseye.

This game really has some of the best RPG dungeons this side of Lufia II though...

The only thing I remember about Lufia II is the fucked up dungeon that was bugged beyond being playable.
