Is Romancing SaGa for the PS2 any good?
« on: September 10, 2007, 01:13:24 AM »
It's supposed to be a remake of the original SFC game, or so I hear.  Is it any good, or is it another disastrous chapter in the SaGa series (the only one I've enjoyed was SaGa Frontier 2)?

I see for like $6 all the time. I'm tempted to buy just because it's a JRPG.

Thats sorta why I got it lol. It'll probably end up trade in fodder for the 50 cents someday without me having ever touched it lol.

Uhhh, if you can, get it for me and send it along with the other stuff, and I'll get you a JPS2 game of about the same price and send it over to you.  :-*

Oh, I read about Unlimited Saga, and I don't want that one. :/

Romancing SaGa = teh expensive?

What about Star Ocean Till The End of Time and, uh...Valkyrie Profile 2?  Those are two other games I want...are they cheap?  Like, cheap enough that we can send games along and do an exchange when we send each other our surprise packages?

Not sure about VP2, but SO3 is cheap.

i liked it! sort of!

the character designs make me question humanity. they are so godawful and disturbing. the story is stupid and 8-bitty, which would be OK if it weren't drenched in terrible voice acting. which, actually, i think you can basically skip. still, it's really annoying how overblown the story is for how "go kill dragon" it is.

i liked the weird gameplay, but i wished there were more in the road of generally compelling things in the game. if you don't care about graphics and story and just want to grind on weird gameplay systems, it's well worth buying.

this is good advice in general, when you don't know anything about the game. but, in this case, it depends on taste.

Look at this list from wiki

Game credits:
Final Fantasy: game design
Final Fantasy II: game design
Final Fantasy Legend: Director and scenario
Final Fantasy Legend II: Director and scenario
Romancing SaGa: Director, scenario, system design and battle design
Romancing SaGa 2: Director, scenario and game design
Romancing SaGa 3: Director
Treasure of the Rudras: Supervisor
SaGa Frontier: Producer and Director
SaGa Frontier 2: Producer
Racing Lagoon: Producer
Legend of Mana: Producer
Hataraku Chocobo: Producer
Wild Card: Game Design
Unlimited Saga: Producer and Director
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles: Producer
Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song: Producer and Director
Code Age Commanders: Executive Producer
Final Fantasy XII: Executive Producer (w/ Yoichi Wada)

All shit. Except Final Fantasy, that was playable. And of course, the only good FF Legend is 3, and surprise - he isn't there!

You should avoid every game on this list, really.

The guy definitely has a bad track record, but Code Age Commanders isn't too bad. And even though EB hates FFXII, that was awesome, too.

He's heading up The Last Remnant, right?

I want to agree. Kawazu makes games that only the really depraved JRPG fan can enjoy. Anyone with some semblance of, I dunno what the best word is, taste? Knowledge? Sense of fun? Lack of masochistic tendencies? Won't enjoy them.

I did like FFCC though, as a multiplayer game it was a blast :/

Part of me was tempted to play Romancing Saga cause I tried it on SNES but the incomplete English translation got in the way. The truly non linear design though is kind of off putting to me now.

Loved the game. I finished it with Claudia. I need to make another run on it with either Albert or Aisha - or both!

not in any meaningful way. he's in charge of the project, but he's in charge of a hell of a lot of shit in a very hands-off way these days. he's risen up the ranks.

one thing that made me cheerful was talking to the FFCC guys who recognize that the first game sucked. tee-hee.

you have horrible taste in Gameboy RPGs.  FFL2 >>>>>>> FFL3

Kawazu isn't working on Last Remnant but most of the rest of the SaGa team is.  I think this might include Kyoji Koizumi who since RS2 has come up with a lot of the complex mechanics that people credit/blame Kawazu for.  "My goal is to make the system complex enough that even I can't understand it" - Kyoji Koizumi

yeah, lost remnant looks mighty suspicious if you ask me, and thus far i've seen all there is to say, and interviewed the creators, so why not ask me?

it makes sense to make them do a real game that's not a saga for moneyhat reasons, but this whole battlefield thing seems really fucking weird. and they were cagey and unwilling to explain how the battlefield-style battles could work in a dungeon, because, uh, they can't. hrm.

oh well, hopefully there will be a playable demo at TGS.

Uhhhh it doesn't. And when it gives tips of where you are supposed to go, you go into caverns full of dinosaurs that are levels wayyyy over you and take forever to beat.

game isn't fun at all.

there's a difference between non linearity and half assed game design

what's the point of a non-linear game if it tells you where to go and what to do? the whole point of RS is making your own progress without any hand holding and preparing your party for the final battle.

I played with the thief dude and never had any problem of going into areas which were too powerful for my party to handle, I guess I just got used to the game and knew how to handle it.

i never complained about that, for the record. i complained about the shitty fucking graphics, distinguished mentally-challenged story, and disturbingly hideous characters.

so, yeah, it would be great if it weren't for all of that lolz
