old psp versus new psp: the evilbore definitive answer
« on: September 11, 2007, 12:54:51 AM »
i just bought a new school psp slim and lite (PSP-2001) and i put it to the test versus my old one in load times, screen response visuals. real talk ahead; fanboys and ninthings get out.

i tested the game with: guilty gear slash; monster hunter freedom 2; dynasty warriors vol. 2; sega genesis collection.

first impressions: the new d-pad is LIGHT YEARS better. LIGHT YEARS. i quickly swapped between the two playing guilty gear slash, and while the game does a great job compensating in software for the psp-1000's shit d-pad, the raised d-pad on the 2001 felt ever so much better. i can hit dizzy's bizarre-ass supers motions 100% of the time as opposed to maybe 60%. better yet, i could do the motions much more lightly, rather than pressing down like a fiend. i played it for almost an hour in the airport with little thumb fatigue. AWESOME.

also it is so light it is freaky. the dimensions don't seem much smaller, although it FEELS thinner even as it doesn't immediately LOOK it. man, though, it feels like it weighs next to nothing. this also rocks.

screen response time: gaf lies. it IS improved, although not very much when there's large amount of blacks. dynasty warriors vol. 2 used to be a bit of a blurry mess on the 1000, but it is crystal clear on the 2001. on the other hand, sega genesis collections side scrollers with lots of black swathes like shinobi 3 didn't seem to benefit as much, although there *is* some clear improvement. basically, it seems like significantly better response times when the pixels change color, but not so much going from off->color. contrast ratio is a lot higher; it is easier to view it clearly from the sides and top/bottom. my wife will confirm this; she could even see the difference with her eyes totally rolling. also, NO DEAD PIXELS. i rock!

load times: dynasty warriors vol 2 has load times quartered, and guilty gear slash has no load hitch when going to a new stage/character. sega genesis collection, however, seems to have the same lengthy load times -- there was maybe a trivial second or two difference. booo. games that stream data seem to benefit the most; games that "chunk" whole data blocks seem to not benefit at all.

speakers are MUCH louder and clearer, and the wlan switch is wisely placed on the top. the new springless umd tray is eh. the silver glossy finish does not seem to smudge nearly as bad. lan performance/range seems roughly the same, and there are less web cache errors with the 64 MB RAM.

DOWNSIDES: no protective sleeve included! FUCK YOU SONY. also, no tv-out cables were available for sale. FUCK YOU X2, SONY.

overall, i say: WIN. it is right on the cusp of being worth an upgrade for psp fanboys. it's definitely worth choosing over the old psp if you don't have a psp. for everyone else, keep your old psp -- like i said, it's right on the cusp of being a worthy upgrade, but better pixel off->on responses need to happen.

I have been playing mine and carrying it in my pocket with no case. So far no scratches.

I am gonna ruff ride mine without any kind of case and see if it can take it. If not ill just trash it and buy a piano black model and keep it in a case like my old fat PSP.

It sounds like all PSP owners should upgrade when the slim drops to the DS's price.  It's too bad that they didn't increase the screen's response rate more but even the old PSP's ghosting didn't bother me that much.  I was able to get used to it 'cause the screen is so small.  Your wife's pretty cool for not chewing you out for buying a 2nd PSP.

very good info. this is the kind of thing i want to read.

i think i'm going to buy one; i go to japan the week it comes out and i can buy some fruity color we'll never get, which will probably be enough to push me over the edge.

it seems unlikely to my deeply naive ass that they'll do a more substantive upgrade of this thing.

The new PSP kicks serious ass as does it's lineup this fall.  Fuck Jeanne D'Arc for expecting me to level / collect gems before the last battle, though.

Holy shit, finally some real IMPRESSIONS that cut right to the chase and have none of the bullshit!   :o

TV out impressions plz

From a post on GAF, I gather the TV output is basically 1:1, so if you have a 720p TV, it'll basically sit in the middle of the screen taking up roughly a quarter of the display. Is this real? If so, I think I just decided against the purchase :/

I'm interested in how it looks with a TV zoom feature enabled.

Thanks for the writeup, I'm on the fence on whether or not to upgrade... very good to hear that the new one doesn't smudge as much, but it sucks that the ghosting hasn't been completely fixed. After a price drop, I'll bite.

not exactly -- the psp would output a 480p signal containing a 480x272 picture, taking up closer to half the display, which your tv would upscale to 720p. i'd actually be pretty interested in this feature if i had a component input to spare :(

edit: oh wait, i was thinking of 480p as 640x480 rather than 854x480 -- it'd be about a third of the screen

i thought the silver one looked bad in pictures...and I only bought it to tide me over till the piano black unit releases.....

But really in person, the silver unit doesnt look bad at all - if it can stand up to being carried around wth no case, I will likely just keep it.

ive seen it in person, the packaging was even tacky. It looked like it was packaged by fisher price in some unholy union with the family guy. Granted, the hardware is clearly an improvement, but argh silver.

Yeah, silver looks bad.  Makes it look like a cheap kids' toy (which I guess the PSP kinda is anyway).  I have a white unit reserved, but I am thinking about changing to light blue.

Does the new silver look the same as the silver that the old PSP had?  I saw that in Japan during the summer and it looked really cheap.  Silver was originally my 1st choice but I ended up getting blue.

In person I cant even see the 'sparkles' - it just looks gray.

I think you could see the sparkles more in photographs because of the bright camera flash.

I went into this thinking I REALLY hated the color and just bought it so i could get some time with the new unit.  I was pelased to find out the silver wasnt 1/2 as bad as i thought.
