Now that I have a decent internet connection at home, I've decided to catch up on TV shows and whatnot, but my laptop only has like 4 GB left on the hard drive, so I wanna buy an external HDD so I can download without worries.

Since you fellers are into all that fancy tecknologee, could you recommend a good one (brand, model, whatnot) to me? I get paid on the 21st, so I have a few days to mull over which one to get before I buy it.

I just wanted people to recommend me shit so I knew what to look for. Then, if those brands were unavailable I'd just buy the biggest, cheapest one I could find, I'd start a new thread bosting about it and then people would jump on my ass telling me what a POS I'd just bought.

I don't even know how much an external HDD goes for - $500? And do you just connect them to the machine using USB cables?

there are usb and firewire ones. I dunno about cost either. doubt it would be as much as 500

They didn't have Seagate...but they had a sale on Buffalo brand external hard drives, so I picked up a 500 GB one. Cost me about $160, which I guess is pricey by US standards (going by the prices on Amazon), but everything's more expensive in Japan. $:-\$

Oh wow, what you got for $160 isn't that bad Ichi. Thats not just an External HDD but a NAS drive. It has the added ability of being able to act as a standalone file server (basically not being tethered by a PC having to be on).

And at 500GB? Da fug? Thats a STEAL

I want to get one myself but most NAS Drives seem to be afflicted with some disease that causes transfer rates over its Ethernet connection to be painfully slow (when compared to being hooked up via USB/Firewire)

Still, it's cheaper than I expected it was gonna be. I know nothing about computers and I figured one of these things was gonna set me back at least $300.

Ahhhhh ok

$160 for a 500GB External HDD sounds about right. A NAS drive with that amount of space would be going for $250

Yeah, I wouldn't know what to do with a NAS Drive anyway.

500 GB is even more than I need, probably, but what the heck...the price difference between this one and the 320 gb and 400 gb models was just a few hundred yen!

If you're unsure of brand or whatever, but an internal drive and an external enclosure. You can get whatever you want, and it's a snap to put together.
