September 12, 2007 - We didn't know what to expect when Xbox Japan chief Takashi Sensui introduced Square Enix at Microsoft's Tokyo Game Show briefing on Tuesday in Japan. There had been talk of a new massively multiplayer online RPG from the company, and of course Star Ocean 4 was still without a platform.

The announcement that followed was a bit on the disappointing side. The previously announced Infinite Undiscovery is now being published and produced by Square Enix, Sensui announced. Star Ocean developer Tri-ace is still handling the development, with Microsoft sharing technical expertise.

Square Enix producer Hajime Kojima and Tri-ace producer Hiroshi Ogawa took the stage to give first details on the game, which has been shrouded in secrecy since its announcement last year.

Ogawa spoke first at a high level. "We're developing this game with the key words of Discovery and Impact," he said. "The image is that of 'feeling gameplay' that surrounds the various discoveries you make on the game field. In a world created through AI from the senses of sight, sound and smell, you make a discovery, and an by taking action based on that, you create a result with impact."

The game makes use of a new "Situation Battle" system. This system involves gameplay situations changing in real time, and players having to take appropriate actions. As an example, Ogawa showed a screenshot of your party attempting to escape from a prison. A giant ogre appears on the scene and wreaks havoc on allies and enemies alike.

The battle system runs in real time, so the clock keeps on ticking even when you've opened up a menu. Typical of a Tri-ace game, the battles are action-oriented.

Tri-ace shared a first ever trailer of the game, which used some gorgeous pre-rendered CG sequences to hint at a storyline surrounding a world in ruin as a moon approaches on a collision course. The trailer also showed a few battle sequences. These looked rough, but this is presumably because the game is early in development.

I don't know what is so disappointing about Square Enix publishing the game. That's to be expected. Enix has had a long history with Tri-Ace games and has always published them. This relationship continued when Enix merged with Square and they published Radiata Stories, Star Ocean 4, and Valkyrie Profile 2. All devved by Tri-Ace. You have to be a total nub or a 360 fanboy scared that the will go multiconsole (it won't because MS is co-producing) to find that "disappointing".

The problem was that we've known about IU for a year now. When they walk out there to announce an exclusive title, and then talk about a game we've known about for a year now, it's a little disappointing. I mean, it's still impressive to see 4 SE titles on the 360, but it wasn't earth shattering like it could have been.

I didn't really expect a thing so I don't see it as disappointing.

The disappointment is that they expected a new game to be announced.  I think everybody already assumed Infinite Undiscovery would be published by Square Enix, so it's like "This is not really an important announcement."
