Did anyone get World of Conflict?
« on: September 18, 2007, 01:38:20 AM »
I think it's available in stores now.  The PC demo looked amazing.  At very high settings, it even brought my PC to its kness.   My PC is already pretty powerful (3.6 GHZ Core 2 Duo, 4gb, extremely overclocked 8800 GTX) yet the game went down to 20fps in certain scenes.  I wonder if upgrading to a quad-core will help.  I would love to play this game w/ 60fps at max settings but it might not be possible with today's hardware.

So I've been messing with the graphics settings and the minimum framerate still seems to hover around 20fps.  I'm guessing the framerate drops are mostly related to processor speed.  Can those of you with quad-cores see if you get better results?  Patel, I know you've got a Quad.  Would you kindly do a benchmark?  Frag, Drinky, should I upgrade to a Quad this fall?

Judging from what I saw on my PC, the 360 version will be severly downgraded.  So no 360, even though it's the best next-gen system right now.  Plus, RTS suck on consoles anyways.  I'm interested to see if Halo Wars will buck the trend.

Gamespot gave the game a 9.5.
IGN - 9.3
PCGamer - 93%
Eurogamer - 9/10

Those are sort of  :o scores from reputable places. Congrats to Massive for finally getting their breakout game.
Also, thanks to Blizzard for putting Vivendi so awash with cash from WoW that they gave Massive more time and manpower to make the game go from merely good to great.

Smooth-Regarding framerates, the game is really VRAM limited more than anything else when you turn everything up to full. Even a 768MB GTX-literally the card they had in mind when they were tuning the mode. The thing is that the combination of AA, AF, at the super-huge res you are running at 1920x1200-eventually causes you to just run out of VRAM. Also, Massive has said that while the game doesn't look as good, it does run better in DX9 mode rather than DirectX10 mode.

I don't think anyone is going to get 60fps at 1920x1200 on high settings for a good long while-I bet even the next revision of cards punt on it.

Thanks, Frag.  I tried DX9 and it did give a boost in performance.  However, even in DX9, the framerate still drops to 20fps sometimes and the average framerate is nowhere close to 60fps at 1920x1200.   I guess the tech in this game is really ahead of its time.  Maybe I should wait a year for the hardware that will let me enjoy it with max settings in DX10.  The gap beteween DX9 and DX10 is not huge but I notice the differences such as the better looking soft particles in DX10.

BTW, are you still playing Bioshock, Frag?  There's a widescreen hack available now on widescreengamingforum and it works really well.

WiC would work great on a console. Much better than CNC3.

Yeah, I would expect that even in DX9 you'd probably pull 30fps more often than 60fps. Massive has said that they want their engine to be future proof while still being smooth on high end hardware, and I think as long as you stay about the twenties 90% of the time that's good enough for an RTS. In an FPS, that would be unacceptable of course-anyting less than 60fps in a shooter is unforgivable.

I'd still give the game a go, at least the first couple of levels. My understanding is that the story sucks you in once you get rolling with it. I can personally attest to that quality in the multiplayer-it has that same "wtf four hours have gone by already" feel that a good night of CS or BF2 have.

Played it through twice, done with it for now. Never bothered with the hack, glad that it works out well.

I dunno, I like the game, but sometimes it feels like there is too much going on. This is kinda a personal nag tho since some people might fare better picking apart whats important from all thats going on, but it just feels like im either missing half of whats going on or am rushed to do things in missions.

I kinda dont like macro-intensity in my games. I think CoH struck a really nice balance between chaos and control. Ill keep playing World in Conflict cause it has some nice ideas and the setting is neat, and well yeah, its pretty.

I'll probably grab this today when I go to grab Orochi.  If it's in stock.  Gamestops are really shitty about getting PC games in, and if it's marginally popular and I haven't preordered, I'm probably fucked.

The 360 version is a non-option.  If high end PCs aren't running this like gravy, the 360 version is going to be a downgraded piece of shit.

TVC: Fred Meyer had lots of copies, and collectors editions, when I was there last night anyway.

Is it worthwhile to pay a extra $10 to own a piece of history?  The Collector's edition actually comes with a piece of the Berlin Wall.  Google also showed something about a free mousepad but I can't find the offer anywhere now.

You could sell your copy to TVC if he doesn't care about owning history.  What settings did you use, MAF?  Have you had any significant slowdowns so far?

The physics setting seems to make the biggest difference.  Are you still on the 3200+?  You should probably set the physics to low until you've put in the dual-core.  The 8800GTS should be able to handle most of the graphics options at the resolution that you play at.
