If the Nintendo Wii becomes the standard in the video game industry, we are all fucked.

Seriously. I like the Wii. I get the waggle, and I like the controls on some games (Zelda, Metroid). I even get why they are going in the direction they are going. What I refuse to support, though,  is these nongames.

Nongames are what I have nightmares about. I picture a world where we are playing shit we will only want to play for five hours a week tops (that's pushing it) and shit with gimmicks that have no fucking replay value. This is what gives me insomnia folks. Because, if gaming gets away from the story based or just plain fun gameplay multi-hour experiences that we have now, then we are screwed.

I see a reality where more people are gamers, but think about that. What if we had gamers who play like people drive? Old people are annoying enough when they are in front of you going 25 in a 50. Think about how you might have to wait for gramps to figure out how to play Mario Galaxy 2 - Minigames Galore! in the middle of NonGameStop because he just can't do it, but it's SOOO FUNNN to him. I couldn't take that. I mean, don't we already have enough gamers to where we hate a section of them? We already have enough 6 year old racists on Halo 2 (soon to be 3) to be annoying enough. Jesus.

God, I'm fucking scared guys. I don't want games like Halo or Metal Gear Solid to leave. This shit is fucking scary.

motion controls are great.  standard dual analogue controls only give you 2 for the left stick + 2 for the right stick = 4D control, as in general relativity.  With the Wii nunchucks, you get 3 rotational axes on the left + 3 translational axes on the left + 3 rotational axes on the right + 2D movement of the analogue stick = 11D control, as in supergravity.  I don't see how anyone could say no to that --- you want more D's, don't you?

Wanna get rid of non games? Just get rid of social security so old people don't have the TIME to play non-games

i agree to an extent.  I don't think traditional gaming will ever completely go away, but i could see it taking a backseat to non games.  It's the same kind of fear that was present during the switch from 2d to 3d.  i hate non games sooooo much.

Dude, relax.  Traditional gaming will not go away.  Look at PC gaming.  That platform that is pretty cost prohibitive yet cutting edge PC games and technologies are still in development.  Did you miss TGS?  Look at all the "real" games in development across all current consoles.

Panic when Sony and Microsoft and third party developers stop making "traditional" games.

bloodwake, if this helps ease your mind any, this is the rest of the wii lineup for september:

if this is any indication as to where the wii is headed and what developers have planned for it, i say don't worry too much.  we're in good hands, for the most part i doubt developers care to make baby training games or flash-like casual games.  to me, it seems like the wii is back on "teH kiddy" tip, which is great because i really hope they keep that shit out of the ps3 and 360 lineup.

what you need to worry about is if the future of development grows up on games like mario party 8 or carnival games.  if the little tykes out there now are enjoying this shit and find a strong liking to the simplicity and dumbed-down gameplay, we're definitely in for some bullshit when we're 50 and gaming.

Assuming you're being serious, you don't really have much to worry about. Sure, Nintendo's had some luck with a few of their non-games taking off, but it's not going to last forever. People like to jump on the latest money making scheme, and in due time the market will get saturated and publishers will realize it won't be working any more.

So you don't have to worry about non-games taking over. What you SHOULD be worried about is the effect the Wii will have on all future console hardware from every other manufacturer.

There needs to be a bridge game, not a game ABOUT bridges, but a game that bridges the controls of the minigames into a larger more filled out game.  There isn't one of these yet, and third parties if they were smart at all would be trying to make this game.  Zack & Wiki looks like the only thing close to it right now.  Nintendo is leaving this huge opening for other publishers and they're dropping the ball, content to make shovelware that breeds mistrust amongst the consumer.
