So let's do a podcast
« on: September 20, 2007, 11:37:43 PM »
I'm about to have a lot of free time, and I need practice for when we start up the freakStomp podcast.  I bought this plantronics headset, and Podcasting for Dummies, which ought to have the words WHY DID YOU BUY THIS $16 BOOK WHEN ALL THIS INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE FREE ON THE INTERNET YOU FUCKTARD at the top of every page next to the page number, but anyway.  I know you fine young fuckers have talked about it before.  This would be some strictly low-rent shit, you don't have to buy a bunch of expensive bullshit or anything, just a decent headset or desk mic, and try to restrain your natural impulses for mouthbreathing all over the fucking place.  Doesn't matter if it sounds that great, this would be just for fun.  I could get some practice editing (until we start the freakStomp cast, then I might not have the time and someone else would have to take over), and you could run your sucks like you're some kind of expert.  I'm thinking a general nerd entertainment podcast - Movies, TV, etc.

Since I don't know fuckall, I'll need some research help.  Let me get a list of questions together and we can all figure out the details together.  If there's any expense involved I'll cover it.  All you guys will need to do is supply your own mic.

I was leaning heavily towards teamspeak from the little research I've done so far.  The Video Game Show sounds decent enough.  For post-processing I'll probably use Audacity to do any cutting and mixing and noise removal.  Warning - keep in mind that I have never done this before, and I am a fairly stupid individual to begin with, so it might not be pretty at first.

As for hosting, since this is just for fun and practice, we might as well use one of the ready-made podcasting hosts out there.  One that does all the RSSing and pinging and tagging for us.  You don't get a lot of bandwidth with those types of hosts, but I doubt we will need much (at least to begin with).

* Evilbore, GAF, OA
* Gaming, Tokyo Game Show, how much PS3 sucks, what you guys are playing

Okay, I'm going to do some serious research this weekend, and set up any accounts I need to set up when I decide on what client/host/etc.  If anyone has any suggestions post them here - I'll look into Ventrilo.  I'll let everyone know what the deal is on Monday, and we can set a date and time from there to do a test cast.  Anyone who wants to participate is welcome.

Your homework:

Come to an agreement on what you'd like the test cast to be about.  So we're not just meandering all over the place.  We can stray off-topic, but it is editing practice for me so I'd like to keep the subject a little focused.

I'd love to do that, as I am a big fan of Old Time Radio shows, but there'd be the factor of having to write a script, and casting, etc.  That is certainly something I'd love to pursue in the future, when I've learned enough to be a decent sound editor.  Maybe after we have a few episodes under our belts - that way there'd be time for a script to be written, we'd find out who's got the best voices, etc.

Also, homework:

Think of a unique name for the podcast.  I'm really of no opinion on the matter, so whatever everyone decides is fine with me.

I played around with Audacity last night, and it seems pretty intuitive.  I know it'll be time-consuming, but the interface is easy to understand.  I also looked into some hosting options.

I think I'm going to pay for a ventrilo or teamspeak server and host through that, since I'll be using it for freakStomp stuff as well.  They're fairly inexpensive - I've found them as low as $2.99 a month for 10 slots, and that's way more than you'll ever need for a podcast.  The server programs usually come ready to go, too, so we wouldn't have to fool with setting it up.  Everyone would just have to download the client and log in.  I may need help because I am a technical distinguished mentally-challenged fellow, but I do need to learn this stuff if I'm going to be in charge of the freakStomp podcast.

So, everyone pretty much agrees that Ventrilo is the better of the two applications?  If so, once I pay for the server and get the information, I'll probably have a bunch of questions for you tech-minded folks.

Well, before you pay for a server, is there any way we can install it on one or something?  I mean, my mupepe.com server is literally doing nothing and is paid up for another 8 months or so.  i don't want you to have to purchase something you don't have to.

If you'd like to host, Mups, that's fine by me, but I'm gonna have to pay for a chat server for freakStomp anyway.  I will have no idea how to install the client software, so we'd need someone who could do that.

I could never do the podcast thing since most people here don't game on the PC, but if you wanted to have a PC versus console debate where we could devolve the conversation into namecalling under five minutes i'd be totally game for it.  :lol

I've always wanted to do a video game blog in the same style as NRO's The Corner (though the content there is only good when republicans are losing elections). Half internet forum (including trolling other posters) and half blog careening together haphazardly makes for a surprisingly compelling format.

Join the podcast, Frag.  Although I also own every console, I still consider myself a hardcore PC gamer.  If spending at least $1000 on upgrades every year is not hardcore, then I don't know what is.  You and TVC's gaming tastes are the ones that I respect the most because you're both great at dissecting the strengths & weaknesses of every game while putting aside your personal biases.

I'll love to see you go against Lyte Edge in a console vs PC debate.  He seems pretty adamant about the redundancy of PC in the gaming world of today.

While I don't mind a little video game talk - wouldn't you guys rather do a Movies/TV podcast?  One segment movies, one TV and DVD, and one general "what did you buy this week?" mini-reviews segment?  I guess we could incorporate a video game segment in there.

Anyway, Candyflip, I have no idea what you're talking about.  I am totally in over my head with this, and that's why I want to rent a ready-made server for this stuff so it's all done for me.  I'll have my hands full enough learning to edit.

I know Drinky doesn't really want to do a video game podcast (I think he mentioned it in the last thread about podcasting), so I guess we'll compromise.

How does this sound (this is off the top of my head)  - A split-segment podcast.  We'll talk about our purchases for the week, and that should encompass the Movies/TV/DVD/Reviews portion of the show.  I'm sure game talk will make up a large part of that segment, anyway.  Then we take a break (I have to learn how to insert breaks and stuff), and after the break straight into video game talk - a focused discussion on a specific topic.  PC vs. console is fine by me.

If you guys don't mind, I'd like to "host" the opening segment.  Whoever wants to host after the first show is welcome, but I'd like to do it for practice in getting show notes together, writing the outline, etc.  I don't really want to host the video game segment, so whoever wants that job is welcome - I'll just sit back and comment occasionally.

I'd like to keep it edited down to around 30-45 minutes long, but it's not a big deal if it goes a little over.

The list of people confirmed for the podcast (in other words, people who have definitely stated they're in)

Me
Drinky
Mupepe (yes, you can sing)
Cajolejuice
T324
Billy Rygar
Happy Rhymenocerous

*Phoenix didn't say he was in, but I want to use that rap

That leaves 3 slots open.  First three people who speak up after this post are in, after that it's a lock.  Unless you guys think we can coordinate more than ten people talking at once (I don't - and it might be too chaotic and laggy even at ten), then we're going with that number.   If anyone wants to back out, then the next person in line is up.  Whoever misses out this time can get in on the next one.

I'm fine with doing a debate with someone  or just talking about some PC games for a few minutes. I'd say that you should just dedicate your first podcast to ranting about the shittiness of fanboys and internet forums, and MAYBE talk about a video game or two-I'd say that a REAL TALK segment about Persona 3 might be some ridiculous fun.

If I had a fragcast with EB people, here's what my first week's agenda would be:

*) What are you playing, where instead of constructively talking about the games we play we brutally mock each other's tastes and our own taste-or lack thereof-instead. At some point wacky jappy game is talked about and someone calls it 'weird pedo shit'. Fun times. (15minutes)
*) What's Dumb on The Internet: GAF at its finest. (20 minutes)
*) REAL TALK: brutally honest Persona 3 edition. (10 minutes)
*) Everyone shares their top five things they hate about next-generation gaming so far.  (10 minutes, cut if time is running over for next week)
