i've seen it mentioned quite a few times, so i hope there's more to it than wishful thinking or "microsoft said so".

The new systems (with the 2nd heatsink) have yet to break as many as the older ones did.

think of it this way, if MS can really keep the failure rate at 3-5% this time with the new batches of hardware (+ old repaired ones now with the 2nd heatsink), then we have a good looking future for the 360.

Yeah, new systems broke out of the box quite frequently.  True, long term is still a mystery, but if short term is good, that's a fine sign.

The new systems, with the second heatsink and the HDMI, they are good though, right?

MS announced the whole 3-year warranty right before they started shipping the units with the extra heat sink, so they are probably confident it will stop them from breaking. But yeah, we won't really know for sure till a year later.
