Why wouldn't they be? They're very successful.

* Team Fortress 2 has them
* PS3 is implementing them
* Metroid Prime 3 has them
* Super Collapse 3 on PSP has them

I find that I pat myself on the back when I get an achievement in Blue Dragon. I haven't looked at the list yet though.

It would be cool to see XBL grow old with the gaming community and you would be able to look back at achievements you got 10 years ago, or something like that.

Blue Dragon's achievements are pretty hard and time-consuming, and you can miss monsters and items if you don't use a guide. Most of the story achievements are related to little mini-games that if you screw up, you can't get it unless you reload.

I would prefer RPG achievements to be story related, like Enchanted Arms. Beat the game, get the 1000. Maybe an achievement for the hard side-bosses.

The "irony" achievement in Bioshock was fucking awesome.

It would give people more of an incentive to upgrade. Like say 10000 points gets you a month of free XBL on the Xbox Wii!

The real question is if Achievements are going to be transferable from 360 to Xbox 3. My personal guess is that Demi is going to be at this for at least another 7 years.

They will! If you can transfer Gamertags from Xbox to 360, you can transfer points. The whole Gamerpoint system is probably all XML or something similar based anyway, I can't see how it would be impossible to implement.

And I will continue farming achievements for a long while. Achievements are amazing. Haters just don't understand.

If the next iteration of the Xbox is backwards compatible with the 360, I foresee achievement points staying in the picture.  I got into Achievement points in Oblivion and Dead Rising.  But this past summer I had an issue where an old Phantasy Star Universe account (which I thought I had cancelled) caused my XBL account to be cancelled.  I now have a new account, but all my achievement points are gone.  I'm not really motivated to get back into achievement points.  The one good thing about that whole episode though is that I no longer have any Sneak King achievement points associated with my gamertag.  :)

if I make an X360 RPG the achievement points will be like 800 for starting a new game + 190 for finishing the game + 1 point each for triggering a bunch of completely inconsequential but obnoxiously obscure and rare events, like some slight variation on a shopkeeper's dialogue that has a 1/10,000 chance of coming up each time you leave and enter the shop.  I will do this because I hate achievements and I hate completionists.

I like RPGs that have achievements for weird extra stuff, but honestly Blue Dragon's achievements are mostly bollocks. I pray to god Lost Odyssey doesn't have similar ones. Especially bollocks are the item and monster achievements, as demi pointed out. Plus the "level to 99" achievements which make the game even more retardedly easy than it already is. There should have been many more story-related achievements, and a few more optional boss monster achievements, imo. Enchanted Arm's were a little too straightforward though.

I think Blue Dragon's implementation is basically as good as it's going to get for JRPGs.  Giving achievements for story events that are all mandatory anyway is stupid, so what else is there?  At least it doesn't require you to play the game twice, like Eternal Sonata.

Note that although I think it's as good as they can get for JRPGs, I still don't find them particularly enticing.  It's just not a good genre for em, you know?

Making me grind to 99 is not an achievement

Making me defeat uber-hard side bosses is an achievement

Defeating story bosses should be an achievement, ESPECIALLY the final boss. Tell everyone that I did in fact beat the game.

Reaching X score on any mini-game should be an acheivement.

well a game like oblivion has good achievements because none of them are unfair and the main quest only gives like 300 points.  for JRPG's you don't have nearly as many different sidequests.  even mass effect might have some crappy achievements.
