Now, I thought it would be expected to run into some unsavory characters during such a huge launch (which clocked in about just shy of 200 folks), but there were some real assholes out tonight.  Oddly enough, the uber dorks that lined up at 6 PM were the nicest, even if they bid their time by playing the Halo ActionClix board game.  We crushed the rush with good team management and pre-selling, so we locked the doors at 12:35 AM.

We closed all the gates and everything, including over the door - yet folks still tried to come in as late as 1:10 AM and became irate when we refused to.  One person, who we didn't notice on account of the METAL GATE OVER THE ENTIRE DOOR got into a verbal altercation with my manager and threatened him.  When he went outside, another guy was equally irate and gave him an earful.  I was almost about to go outside because things were becoming heated - this guy felt like we didn't notice him (hello, fucking metal gate dickhead!) and he deserved to know that we were closed.  Another guy who pre-sold but left line and went home was upset too.

Earlier, I also got a customer who was furious that he was still waiting in line at 12:07 AM, as if he expected to not wait in line for Halo 3.  He threw his receipt at me and told me that we were the worst GameStop ever.  I repeat, this was at 12:07 AM.

People fucking suck.

Nope, but someone said their Legendary box had a scuff and wanted to return it, but we just straight up laughed at them.

Dude, our district manager that said the absolutely latest that any employee should be in a store is 2 AM, and our district services some huge inner city areas (like Oakland).  If you manage a launch right, you should be able to get people in and out pretty quickly.

We told everyone we'd be open 'till the last person in line, not ten to twenty minutes after servicing the last person.  It's fucking Halo, don't come out of your house at 12:30 AM.  What, are you that fucking dense?

The best customer interaction was a guy who asked to purchase a Legendary edition at 12:20 AM.  I told him we were not selling those at this time - regular copies or bust.  He got offended and said he'd take his business elsewhere, and everyone just laughed at him.  The Circuit City and Best Buy folks all pre-ordered their Legendary copies at our store and that should tell you something (Circuit City had a grand total of four, we had something like eighty plus).

last night the staff at the store were pretty big dicks to anyone who showed up after 11pm.  the only reason they were nice to me was because they saw me cash out at 9 30.  but the guy letting the line in was a pretty huge asshole. 

they had loud ass techno music, and everytime someoen tried to enter the store, the guy would stick his hand straight out in front of him and say "back of the line"

i told my brother, "it's like a bouncer at the gayest club ever.  this is the only night his club plays music."

this guy was like 300 lbs with both ears pierced and a pair of sunglasses.  it was all sorts of awesome.

When we close a register, we just can't give them a game.  The metal gate was down in front of the door, blocking all visibility inside and out, a clear indicator that business was closed.  Despite that and the fact that everyone was pretty nice ("Sorry dude, we'll be open again at 10 AM"), people were just jerks.

Really, if you wanted the game that bad, you should've came AT THE VERY LEAST at midnight.  To show up at 12:50 is dumb.

Willco, I had an idea a couple of days ago for the forum, and for Gamestop.

What do you think about a Gamestop thread where you keep everyone abreast of the special deals you guys run?  I'm a card member, so I get that 10% off of pre-owned games and am looking to rebuild my library.

However, I like to know when the buy 2 get 1 free deals are, and I'm sure people would love to know when the used bonuses are active so they know how to maximize their trade-ins.

Is that too much work?  I figured you probably had to memorize that stuff each month (or whenever your sales change.)  Now, if each store has different policies I would understand, but if for the most part sales/deals run company-wide, it would be a big help to the forum.

The actual fan fans, the guys who bought the ActionClix and t-shirts and wallets and crap, were nice guys.  And we got them home within the first few minutes of midnight.  I mean, we had serviced 200 people or so by 12:35 AM.  We also got catering for everyone too.  Leftovers are yummy.

then again, if i just drive about a mile or two to east san jose, then i'm probably in the same terrain as you.  most of the suburbanites around here try and "act" like thugs but are far from it.  i doubt most of them have been in an actual fight before.  sad to hear about the gamestop getting robbed though, for the most part, the employees are far from threatening so i can imagine it being a traumatizing experience for them.  over videogames of all things... *sigh*

Well yeah, they are right across the street from a mall that has like 2 game stores....so obviously their market is a bit fractured.  He said the mall store did like $15K -- which is only 200 Collector's Editions, when you think about it.  I'm sure more isolated stores in more affluent areas did far better.

Some dude in one of my classes said his store cleared $11K in sales last night.  While a great deal of that is probably in trade/credit, I gotta imagine anyone robbing a GameStop made a pretty good haul.  It's a smart target too, since their registers were gonna be full of cash and there's not going to be much in the way of security.

The store I worked at during the holiday season sometimes did like $40k plus, in ONE DAY.  It's ridiculous how much money these stores are clearing, and what shitty security they have.  The employees should sue, because they are being put at risk of being robbed due to lax security.

Oh, I know. I know too well. Back when I was an undergrad at PLU, I thought it would be fun to start up an anime club. Our members were actually all down to earth, well adjusted individuals and we had fun watching stuff on Thursday evenings, but then we decided to go to Sakura Con (back when it was up near the airport) for shits and giggles. Worst idea, ever. People running around throwing "sugoi" and "baka" into their everyday English is just wrong.

There was some prick on the train this morning sitting opposite me who was bitching at the conductor for a few minutes about the trains not being on time. Sort of, but thing is, you don't always have to use the -desu form of sentences when speaking Japanese.  There are different levels of formality and speech styles, so it depends.  It's generally polite to use -desu.  If you say "Atsui desu," it means "It's hot," so in this case, desu is more like "it is."  And when it's hot?  No one ever fucking says that.  They just say "Atsuuu."

But never mind that.  Anyone speaking ENGLISH that adds "desu" at the end of a sentence is a fucking distinguished mentally-challenged fellow.  God damn what the hell is wrong with anime nerds?!  It makes me embarassed to say that I like Japan for fear that a re-re will start talking nerd to me.

When we used to play multiplayer (mostly system link) games in Halo 1 and 2, whenever Leguna would go off talking shit, I'd just start running up behind him and punching or shooting him in the back of the head over and over again...
