Who plays Guild Wars?
« on: October 05, 2006, 10:40:31 AM »
I do.

It's reasonably fun for the money you pay (one time fee instead of WoW).

Personally WoW is more fun. But obviously that's because WoW is very different but comparable at the same time. The world in Guild Wars is very beautiful, IMO more beautiful than WoW, even though WoW is nice. Guild Wars' world is much more detailed than WoW. However, you can't appreciate the landscape and everything as much as in WoW because you can't do mining, fishing, etc. So you pass all these beautiful landscapes and you don't do anything...

Personally I think herbalism is awesome. I played as a paladin on a private server and I put on these robes I wear in my freetime and then collect flowers and create potions and stuff. Good life.

Oh shit where was I. So, Guild Wars is cool and the combat system beats the everliving shit out of WoW. Anyone play it? If so, wanna go questing or summit? :hyper

Guild Wars just wasnt fun for me. As a solo experience its poop, the henchmen are as dumb as rocks. I mean my HEALER is running to melee range? For what? So I have to heal her? Then if you do poorly in a mission your stats keep gettng reduced, lowering the chance at each death of you ever completing the mission during the play period.

Then there's the insane time/material/money costs for getting equipment, the bizzare dancing in time square, how almost every enemy you fight up to level 20 is a generic pirate or a bug creature.

I stopped playing WoW because frankly after two level 60s the casual in me wanted to quit. I havent even been on a raid before and seen any of that end-game content, but I WAS able to solo at least.

I played the demo, but used a friend's account to access the game lol

It was fun for a time, but it got boring. At first I had a blast because I would find real people who would help me with some of the quests that required two players; there was one where one player had to open a gate while the other ran in to preform a certain task. That was cool.

But after it wore off, and I couldn't find any people to play with, I'd stop playing for months. Then I'd get these midnight urges every couple months or so to play the game.

That's cause you're biased.

I would be too if I found my wife through WoW. LAWLZ!
Was before I knew her more than just the fact that she played WoW in some guild I helped out.  Hadn't even heard her on vent yet.  I just couldn't find the game very appealing.  I didn't like the terrain.. and I just felt really contained.  In wow you have so much world to travel around, and in GW I just found little loaded zones n stuff.. like an upgraded PSO sort of.  I don't know what's been given to the game as of late, I played it back in october of 2004.

Dude that was pre-searing. Have you ever played in a party of 8 members?

Nope.

Hello, I am Guild Wars fanboy.  Nice to meet you.

Actually, I'm not that bad, but I have played the game for over a year. Prophecies was grand, Factions ended up dissapointing, but Nightfall seems like its back ont he right track.  The Hero and Henchie control is a long needed option.

Factions was a letdown, because leveling felt actually TOO easy, the enviroment lacked enough variety and the classes were far too one dimensional.  Nightfall classes already look better with the limited time I've had with them.

I want an Online game thats PURELY Solo in that, you can solo the whole game but join in groups or guilds if you wanted too.

The reason I was turned off to WoW was because it felt like I needed to join up with people. I don't really want to deal with snobby MMO players at all.

Edit: I quit around level 20

Why even bother with online RPGs then?

I like the feeling of content always being added to the game and seeing people walk around and stuff but I just don't like being forced to join up with other players. Maybe split up the game in that, one part can be fully solo'ed and the other part needs groups of people or something.

I like online games because I can get really good at them and get respect from all the other players :)  It's fun when everyone comes to you to ask questions and ask for help.  I like giving out items/gold too.

Also, I like the jobs and item making mechanics in Online games. Also commerce and trading with other players is fun to but as far as battling with them in groups...

I just couldn't rationalize paying for WoW after having played GW.  WoW felt like going backwards, especially the elements that are the center of the game like combat, gameplay and balance.  Once in awhile I get the urge to go back to WoW, but then I remember it was just really boring and more time consuming than fun.

I understand wanting to be able to solo, but that sort of defeats the point.  A good guild is just as fine as soloing. The major drawback of groups is having to depend or deal with other players, and being stuck with the group. I tend to like to go from one thing to the other, instead of running the same dungeon instance 5 times in a row.

Yes but Guild Bores isnt even an MMORPG.

I want you to do me a favor, download the EQ trial, and play that for 14 days, then say WoW is going backwards.

WoW, whether you like it or not, has redefined the MMORPG genre, whatever genre Guild Wars exists in is seperate. Its like some weird Phantasy Star Online genre, and honestly, I loved PSO way more.

I dont think you understand how good WoW downtime is. You dont even GET potions in earlier MMORPGs. Half the time you cant eat, and when you sit down health doesnt regenerate nearly as fast.

If you wanna knock WoW's downtime you really need some context and experience to back it up. Guild Wars isnt even an MMORPG, and its also incredibly focused on PVP, which in ANY genre, has rarely had downtime.

WoW has very LITTLE downtime for the genre, and the 'wait' for hp and mana is almost nothing. WoW's combat system is also extremely reactive and responsive, even to rival that of Guild Wars combat system. I had both a Rogue and a Warlock to 60 in WoW, never even raided. Pure PVP, and I had some of the best PVP ive ever had in a videogame.

Ill give Guild Wars some credit, its clearly got something going for it, but the alternative, which isnt really one at all since its not even the same type of game, isnt a bad option.

I'm just saying it feels backwards from GW, not in general.  I'm pretty sure wow is a step up from EQ. And yeah GW and wow play differently, but I got use to certain things in GW that I now just come to expect a bit. It's harder for me to go to wow's slower gameplay, longer grind, transportation system and even the map. I also miss the balance and skill variety of GW. I actually don't care about the graphical difference, as wow's style works, its more just the improved play experience that I want. It's just new standards are set is all.  I read previews of Oblivion and it sounds like it uses gw's traveling system for example.

Did you actually PVP in WoW? I was a pretty high rank in PVP before I quit, its actually incredibly skill based and balanced. In fact I found it far less janky than GW.

I mean you cant start with GW and expect its mechanics in a game of a different genre, thats wierd.

Yeah, I pvp'd in WoW and the balance varies, and is more on a sort of set of waves that ebb and rise according to level and inventory.  At certain levels, certain classes are better than others, like my Warlock stunk for 30-40 levels before it got to be fun. My druid was immediatly valid and usable pvp wise early on, and druids gave me trouble early on in pvp.  Then once I got past 40 and even facing 40 druids, they seem to weakn off and become easy to kill. For most of the game, you can tweak through armor or enchants. There is no way obviously to balance world pvp.

WoW pvp wasn't bad, because I tried it and kept playing it, but it wasn't worth it when I had GW. You don't ever lose in GW because of level or because the guy has high level raid armor. I just got tired of being ganked by something that was skulls to me, then once I realize they were there, I'd handle them and as soon as I got them to half health, they'd run off like pussies. As soon as it became skill based, wow players chickened out generally.  I just never felt cheated out in GW pvp like I did in WoW.

And I think the mechanics would only help other rpg games, especially online ones.  The push for less grind is becoming more a common theme as it is, the map and targeting system could help any mmorpg and skill setup allows a lot of build variety.  I'm not sure if you could transplant the skill system into every game, but I wish games had a class like a Mesmer with the sort of counter-based skills it uses. I'd play WoW again if they added a class like that.

I play FFXI myself, decent game.

Im a lvl 12 Red Mage, and its rather easy to solo with this type of character. Although later on it will become grinding I hear.

Its probably because its not considered an MMO (like etiolate stated). Not paying a monthly fee could probably be the other thing.

It's pretty hard to get an on "MMOG Subscriptions" list when your game is neither an MMO nor does it require a subscription.
